Nonye – Episode 4

Faith and I shared a lifelong bond, forged through our childhood, church, and choir membership. My vocal talents earned me frequent opportunities to lead praise and worship while faith among the backups. Our friendship transcended words as we loved each other like sisters.

After secondary school, Faith gained admission to study Mass Communication, while I faced delays. Her divorced parents’ separation had shaped her upbringing, living with her mom while her siblings stayed with their dad.

Though Faith shared my faith but her commitment differed. Our contrasting upbringings influenced our spiritual journeys. My parents worried about her lifestyle choices had  invited her severally for counsel after I had confided in Mom about Faith’s relationships with teenage boys, earning gifts and attention from them in the name of having crush on her. Mom’s warnings prompted Faith to distance herself.

The incident strained our friendship, with Mom advising me to end my friendship.

Faith listened intently as I shared Dad’s revelation, Mom’s soothing words, and my inner turmoil. Her expression was empathetic.

“I feel trapped,” I confessed. “Why must I sacrifice my dreams for a dream?”

Faith’s grip on my hand tightened. “You’re not alone, Chinonye. We’ll navigate this together.”

“But what if God’s plan isn’t mine?” I asked.

Faith’s response surprised me. “Don’t say that, I believe God doesn’t make mistakes…but maybe Dad’s dream was just his thoughts.”

I considered her words. Could Dad’s dream be his own concerns?

“why don’t you try collecting a JAMB form and sitting for the exam again and we’ll keep hoping.”

I hesitated, unsure. “But what about Mom and Dad?”

Faith’s tone turned stern. “When will you stop being Mum’s pet for God sake Nonye?  do you still see yourself as a baby? Well, that’s one of the consequences of not gaining admission on time, you better let’s focus on finding a solution.”she said

I apologized, and she shared her plan. “I know someone who can help with the JAMB form. We’ll keep your parents in the dark for now.”

” Are you sure this will work out? I asked feeling doubt due to my past experiences

” Trust me baby girl” she winked at me

I left Faith’s place, feeling hopeful  but a bit anxious.

I don’t know how to break this big plan to my parents 

I thought of a way but when I couldn’t, I decided on a thing I concluded on what was already settled in my mind
