Nonye – Episode 16

Amah’s Heart
‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡

A week after Victor’s visit, I just finished washing clothes on a serene Saturday morning when my phone rang, shattering the calm atmosphere. I picked up the call, expecting it to be one of my friends or family members. But instead, I was met with a menacing voice that sent chills down my spine.
“It’s been two weeks now, and we are yet to hear from you,” the voice growled. “We could see you’ve taken us for granted. Watch your back anyway…”
The line went dead, and I was left standing there, frozen in terror. I knew exactly who was behind the call – Ada, the person I had been trying to avoid. The threat was clear, and I knew I had to take it seriously.
My mind racing, I felt a wave of fear wash over me. What had I gotten myself into? I thought about all the possible consequences of crossing Ada, and my heart sank. I was in grave danger, and I knew it.
I stood there, my heart pounding in my chest, as I tried to process the threat. I felt like I was living in a nightmare, and I didn’t know how to wake up.
I slowly put down the phone and took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. But my mind was racing with thoughts of Ada and what she might do to me.
I stood there, frozen, the phone still clutched in my hand. My heart was racing, and my mind was reeling. I knew exactly who was on the other end of the call – Ada. The threat sent a chill down my spine, and I felt a wave of fear wash over me.
“It’s been two weeks now, and we are yet to hear from you,” Ada’s menacing voice echoed in my mind. “We could see you’ve taken us for granted. Watch your back anyway…”
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. I had been expecting this call, knowing that Ada wouldn’t let things slide for too long. But hearing her voice, feeling the malice behind her words, still sent a shiver down my spine.
I looked around the hostel, feeling a sense of unease. Was I really safe here? I thought about telling Rachel and Blessing about the call, but something held me back. Maybe it was fear, or maybe it was just a sense of uncertainty.
I knew I had to do something, but I didn’t know what. Ada’s threat lingered in my mind, making me feel like I was walking on eggshells.
Just then, Rachel walked in, breaking the silence.
“This one you are quiet like this, hope you are okay?
I hesitated for a moment, wondering if I should confide in Rachel about the call. But something held me back. I wasn’t ready to share this secret with anyone just yet.
I forced a smile, trying to reassure her. “Yeah, everything’s fine. Just a bit stressed out, that’s all.”
Rachel nodded, but I could tell she didn’t believe me. I knew I had to come up with a better excuse, but for now, I just hoped she wouldn’t push the issue further.
The thought of calling my brother came to my mind, but I just don’t want to bother him, I thought of opening up to Evelyn maybe she can seek assistance or better still make peace with Ada, even though I’m yet to know what really transpired between them that makes Ada want to go any length to…
Just then, something pop into my mind, the counselling I tore from the bulletin the other day, I searched for it and thankfully came across a number there….I chatted the number because calling wasn’t an option at that very moment….I booked an appointment for the counselling which was two days after.
I thought of calling Evelyn and explaining to her in order to be more careful in her doings. I became scared and sad within me. I don’t need a soothsayer to tell me I’m behind my own problem. I’ve strayed from the right part and going back hasn’t been easy for me to do, I’m guilty within me and I find it very difficult to pray, anytime I thought of doing so I’m always restricted within me. I know I needed healing, I needed redemption……I remembered the word of the psal.PST that says “Before I was afflicted, o went astray” which was what I was experiencing……I had gone astray since I started hiding things from my parents, since I started following my own thought, since I decided to be wiser than my creator and here I am facing the consequences alone.
My story is now in correlation with a story I read during my secondary school days which was titled “Had I known”.
I was lost in thought that o forget I’m not alone, my silent and quietness I guessed must have drawn Rachael’s attention to me as she walked closer holding hand.
” Nonye, I know you aren’t OK but just trying to do, I won’t lie to you, what you are going through can’t be handled alone….she said and I was shocked to hear those words from her…”wait! Could she be aware? No! I can’t remember opening up for her or Blessing, but how come?” I thought within me.
I looked at her and she nodded making me more confused…then she continued…” Don’t be surprise if I tell you we know all you have been going through, we are aware of what transpired between you, chuks and Steve…..she said I was more shocked
” Nonye” she bolded my shoulder….”I know this hasn’t been easy to handle and I know you decide to hide it from us due to the incident that happened earlier, trust me, we can’t hurt you…..we were so scared that night, we were threatened and made to leave you but our mind was with you throughout that night…..I know it hurts to know we were aware of chuks visiting that night, remember I told you if you were in our shoe you would have done the same…..By the way, we sought to help and that’s why we seeked Victor’s help to help us monitor you because we were afraid of chuks hurting you……she said and my eyes almost popped out hearing Victor’s name.
“Vi..ct..or??? you mean…..”
“Yes, she replied nodding in affirmation.
“Although the whole Idea was Blessing’s doing, she had suggested we get someone to watch over you and Victor been a friend to us for sometime now, we approached him and tendered our request of which he agreed to and we were glad he was able to save you that day from Steve…..I know you are also wondering of our reactions that night he came visiting”…..she smiled and then continued….we actually planned his visit, he had informed us of meeting you in a cafe and I had suggested he visited, he knows our hostel already and there wasn’t anyone that directed him here…..you might haven’t seen him with us before and that’s because he’s disciplined and doesn’t go out anyhow”….she narrated
I was already in tears at the moment, I couldn’t believe the people I’ve been hiding my dark secret from actually knows more than I  could imagine….I tried to talk but I lost my voice as my cry became audible, I couldn’t hide it.
Blessing walked in at the moment and I’m sure Rachael must have signalled yo her about her revealing everything to me as she also contributed her part.
“Sorry dear, all will be well…those guys think they can get whatever they desire because of what they belongs to but I’m sure God is more than them”….Blessing said
I braced up  and spoke……”what they want from me is beyond the relationship they claimed and it’s beyond my capacity which is what has been bordering me and weighing me down”…..I said and they looked at each other .
“And what’s that? Rachel asked  concerned.
“I was…….I was about to talk when we heard a loud knock on the door followed by murmurs.
“Who is at the door?” Blessing asked
“What’s happening?…what’s the noise about? Rachel asked rhetorically
Blessing got up to answer the door and were welcomed by the three girls from the other room, one of them holding what looks like a paper.
