Nonye – Episode 3

Amah’s Heart
‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡
“Dad’s words caught me off guard as I heard him talk
” I don’t know how you’ll take this, but I want you to trust God’s leading. Remember, the steps of the righteous are ordered by him”.
His tone made me uneasy, and Mom’s frequent sighs heightened my anxiety.
” I had a revelation yesterday morning, he continued. “I saw you amidst a crowd, weeping profusely with people trying to comfort you, but you couldn’t stop crying”…
I felt desperate for answers. “Dad, what does it mean?” I asked, my voice shaking.
“I was troubled within me and I’ve been praying since then for a clarification and understanding of which I got an answer to this morning while praying”….he said and paused studying my face.
“Chinonye”, I’m sorry to say this but saying it is the best thing to do, I know how much school means to you but I think it’s wise to take a step back.” he finally spoke up.
My heart sank and i felt disappointed hearing the interpretation to his revelation.
“why would God give Dad such a dream? Why? or could this be planned? I thought within me.
Mom intervened, her voice soothing.
“Chinonye, this is God’s way of guiding you and you know we have faced delays in processing your school, this could be God telling us why we’ve been encountering delays previously..”
I struggled to find solace in her words. Why did God choose me? Why didn’t he tell my brother or my mates never to move on with their academic? Why am I the only one with this encounter? And to think I’ve planned my future already.
Dad stood up, his eyes filled with conviction.
“God never makes mistakes. He’s not human, prone to lies or repentance. I want you to note that…..he said as he left for his room, I felt lost, questioning my faith.
I know you are wondering where my faith and fire for God had gone….well, one couldn’t predict what your reaction would be when challenges surfaced….Dad’s reassurance echoed in my mind: ” God never makes mistakes. He’s not human, prone to lies or repentance”.
But doubts lingered. I layed in bed, questioning God’s authority. thinking of what to do and how to convince dad that God’s guidance and protection would be sufficient for me. After all, he has been doing that since day one of my existence. I thought of calling my elder brother and telling him about it but I know he would be in support of Dad’s decision which made me waved off the thought.
Memories of my schoolmates, nearing graduation  fueled frustration within me. I couldn’t imagine being a SSCE holder, while I’ve planned being a lawyer, defending people.
“No, this can’t be! I won’t stay home because of a dream,’ I protested inwardly. “God should speak to me directly, face-to-face. Otherwise, I won’t yield.’
“I feel I’ve been accommodating their decisions for long enough; shouldn’t I have a say at my age?” I think it’s time I made my own choices after all I’m old enough to decide for myself.”
I had dressed up the following morning as I needed to confide in someone and the only person I could think of aside my family member is Faith,my childhood friend.
I got ready to leave.
All I could think of is my parents wanting me to stay home a little more because of warnings from their dream for me.
Who does that to their own child.
I won’t fold my hand and do nothing, and so I picked my bag left.
