โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

~ Genevieve ~

Getting over heartbreak and rejection wasnโ€™t something Iโ€™d ever thought Iโ€™d doโ€”and not because Iโ€™m the high and mighty Genevieve King. No, itโ€™s simply down to who I am.

I donโ€™t believe in love. Sure, Iโ€™m a complete romantic for novels, but I donโ€™t think the kind of love that exists in books happens in reality. You know, the sort that sweeps you off your feet, making you feel complete and at peace. That love thatโ€™s ravenously intoxicating to those involvedโ€”it simply doesnโ€™t exist. Yet, itโ€™s the one I yearn for.

And word of advice: neverโ€”and I mean neverโ€”confess your feelings to someone when youโ€™ve got important exams around the corner. Speaking from experience, rejection and exams are not a winning combination.

In my Tuesday uniform, I strolled down the hallway, AirPods in, listening to an audiobook on my next subject. Iโ€™d have stayed in the library with Aurora, but I was nursing an awful headache that just wouldnโ€™t budge.

I was on my own, minding my own business and not causing a speck of trouble, when someone had the audacity to give me a nudge. I turned my head, my face twisting into a grimace as I recognised the infuriating pest who just couldnโ€™t seem to take a hint.

Liam.

โ€œHey, Gen,โ€ he chirped. I checked either side of me to make sure he was actually addressing me. His boyish grin was infectious and, no doubt, flirtatious, though heโ€™s yet to realise his charms donโ€™t work on me.

I rolled my eyes in annoyance, staring at him, hoping heโ€™d wipe that smile off his face and spit out whatever he had to say before I lost it.

My patience, that is.

โ€œHow are you?โ€ he asked.

โ€œBefore or now?โ€

A frown crossed his undeniably attractive face. โ€œSorry, what?โ€

โ€œApology accepted.โ€ I said it deadpan, and he laughed as though Iโ€™d cracked a joke. I stopped, turned to him with a serious look. โ€œSeriously, what do you want, Liam?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s be friends, yeah?โ€

That word reminded me just how much I hatรฉd the idea of being โ€˜friendsโ€™. I scrunched my face up in distaste and narrowed my eyes, watching him as he stood there with that absurd request.

Friends? With him?

Why on earth would I want that? Perhaps heโ€™s forgotten I stabbรฉd him in the arm once. Maybe heโ€™s in need of a gentle reminder.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said plainly.

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause I donโ€™t like you,โ€ I replied, each word slow and deliberate as I feigned cluelessness. โ€œI think thatโ€™s reason enough.โ€

โ€œBut I like you.โ€

โ€œSo do plenty of people. Join the club.โ€

Liam laughedโ€”the same laugh that captured every girlโ€™s heart in the schoolโ€”and jumped in front of me, blocking my path. I stopped so suddenly I leaned back, trying to keep some distance.

I frowned at the mischief in his green eyes, wondering what on earth was going on in his head. Tucking some strands of hair behind my ear, I tilted my head at him.

โ€œSee? Thatโ€™s why I like you.โ€ His grin widened. โ€œYour personality isโ€ฆ itโ€™s something, alright.โ€

Is thatโ€ฆ meant to be a compliment?

โ€œThanks?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€ I let out a surprised laugh at his ridiculousness. โ€œI thought you said I wasnโ€™t funny. So whyโ€™re you laughing, Genny?โ€

Shaking my head, I walked on, determined to ignore him, but of course, he didnโ€™t give me that pleasure.

โ€œFriends, or I wonโ€™t leave you alone.โ€

โ€œThat sounds a bit like a thrรฉat.โ€

โ€œIt is.โ€

โ€œAlright, so youโ€™ll write your exams with me?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWell, if youโ€™re sticking around, why not take the exams with me?โ€

Liam smirked, but it wasnโ€™t quite like the one I preferred. โ€œYou win.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t I always?โ€

โ€œThis is the longest conversation weโ€™ve ever had.โ€

โ€œTrue. And I havenโ€™t stabbรฉd you yet.โ€

He paused, clearly surprised. โ€œYet?โ€

โ€œMm-hmm.โ€

โ€ขโ€ข

With only one more paper to go today, I headed to the library in search of a book to help with revisions.

The sound of my boots gently slapping against the tiled floor accompanied my fingertips trailing along the edges of the lined books on the shelves. The section of the library I was in was silent, devoid of every sound except the gentle thuds of my boots and my soft humming to a tune.

After all, itโ€™s a libraryโ€”not exactly meant to be noisy.

Ah, there it wasโ€”the book Iโ€™d been searching for. Just as I was about to grab it, a familiar scent drifted past me, and before I could turn around, I was pulled into a room.

It was dark, but I knew instantly it was the storeroom. After all, the flickering bulb that cast our shadows on the walls, illuminating the storeroom was a dรฉad giveaway. I couldnโ€™t help but breathe in Dominicโ€™s scent, even if just for a moment.

โ€œVixen.โ€ His voice was low, almost possessive. He caressed my cheek, and I leaned into his hand, relishing the feel of him once more. โ€œIโ€™d love to hear the joke.โ€

Confused, I looked up at him, seeing his eyes were surprisingly cold. โ€œWhat?โ€

This wasnโ€™t what I wanted. I wanted him to regret his words, but now, his eyes werenโ€™t even warm towards me. Wouldโ€ฆ would I lose him?

He stepped impossibly close, leaving no space between us. Iโ€™d say his expression was unreadable, but thatโ€™d be a lie. Dissatisfaction was written all over his face.

โ€œDonโ€™t play ignorant,โ€ he warned, his voice sending chills down my spine.

โ€œBut I am. What on earth are you talking about? What joke?โ€

โ€œThe one that made you laugh.โ€ I was still confused until he added with palpable disdร in, โ€œLiam.โ€

Oh.

Waitโ€”how did he know Iโ€™d laughed at something Liam had said? Did he have people watching me at school?

I knew he had people watching me outside school since the kidnappiรฑg incident, but I hadnโ€™t realised they were inside as well. Should I be worried?

I looked up, my face blank and indifferent. โ€œYes, and?โ€

โ€œGenevieve.โ€ His voice darkened, sending a thrill down my spine.

โ€œYou do realise Iโ€™m at school, donโ€™t you, Dominic?โ€ I asked, raising a brow. โ€œThis way youโ€™re holding me isโ€ฆโ€

Before I could finish, he wrapped his fist in my hair, pulling my head back. Our eyes met, intense and heated with both annoyance and a touch of siรฑful desire.

โ€œI donโ€™t like you being around other boysโ€ฆโ€

I rolled my eyes, cutting him off, determined to make him even angrier. โ€œWhy not? Shouldnโ€™t kids spend time with their peers? I donโ€™t see the problem.โ€

โ€œGenevieve.โ€

Oh, he didnโ€™t like that. He was on the edge, holding back his aรฑger, but I wouldnโ€™t be me if I let him win now, would I?

โ€œYou know, Liam asked to be friends. Itโ€™s nice, donโ€™t you think? Iโ€™ve got you, now Iโ€™ve got him; maybe Iโ€™ll introduce you two sometime. What do you reckon?โ€

โ€œGenevieve.โ€

Dร mn Dominic and his irritating self-control. He was better at hiding his fury than Iโ€™d expected. But I was still Genevieve King, and I had one more blow to deliver.

โ€œI bet heโ€™d be a good kisser. Maybe I shouldโ€ฆโ€

The rest of my words stuck in my throat as Dominic tightened his grip on my hair. His fury was unmistakable now, and I couldnโ€™t deny I was enjoying my victory. My smirk broadened as I stared at his grim expression.

โ€œWhat?โ€ I feigned innocence. โ€œShouldn’t friends be pleased for each other when something like this happens in… hmm, what’s the phrase I mean?โ€ I paused for a moment, thinking. “Ah, yes. Friendship.โ€

A forced smile crossed his face. โ€œListen to me.โ€ He pinched my jaw, lifting my face to meet his gaze more directly. โ€œYou. Are. Mine. I donโ€™t share, and you know that well enough. The day you let Liam so much as toรบch you, thatโ€™ll be his lร st.โ€

I adored all of Dominicโ€™s sides, but his possessive streak was undeniably the most alluring.

โ€œI dare you, Dominic.โ€ I leaned closer, our lips nearly touching. โ€œThe day you do that, you lose the right to touch me like this. I swรฉar Iโ€™ll never forgive you if anything happens to Liam.โ€

I dislike Liam, but that doesn’t mean I want him hร rmed or want his blรณod on my hands.

โ€œIs that a thrรฉat, Genevieve?โ€

โ€œYes, Dominic.โ€

His face twisted in irritation. โ€œFor Liam?โ€

โ€œYes. For Liam.โ€ I smiled sweetly. โ€œNow, if you donโ€™t mind, Iโ€™ve got to go. Exams, you knowโ€”the things kids take to succeed in life.โ€

I tried to pull away, but he held me close, his annoyingly handsome face inches from mine, his lips temptingly close. I wanted nothing more than to kiss him, feel him lose himself in me.

Dominicโ€™s fingertips traced across my face, his amber eyes filled with longing and melancholy. โ€œYouโ€™re not going to stop, are you?โ€

I wouldnโ€™t, not until he admitted his feelings for me. I didnโ€™t care if it made me look foรณlish.

โ€œI told you I was sorry.โ€ His voice sounded defeated as he continued his gentle touch, his eyes scanning my face as if memorising every feature.

โ€œSorry doesnโ€™t fix it, Dominic,โ€ I replied quietly.

โ€œWhat will?โ€

โ€œThe truth.โ€

โ€œWhat truth?โ€ I didnโ€™t answer, but he soon understood. โ€œButโ€ฆโ€ I rolled my eyes, and, thankfully, he didnโ€™t finish his sentence.

โ€œI need to go.โ€

โ€œGenevieve.โ€ He pleaded softly.

I ignored him, freeing myself from his hold. He let go, his eyes misty as he stepped back.

Ouch, that sight cut right into my heart, leaving a big, gaping hole. Okay, I canโ€™t handle this.

“Dom,” I murmured, cupping his face in my hands. “I love you with everything I have, and while Iโ€™m not alright with you saying you donโ€™t feel the same when I know you do, Iโ€ฆ I can handle it, I think. Why is it so hard for you to say the words when I already feel it? What are you so afraid of?”

“You. Iโ€™m afraid of losing you, Genevieve. It terrifies me. Weโ€™re fine as we are. Letโ€™s not make it complicated with feelings.”

“Donโ€™t you think itโ€™s a bit late for that?”

Dominic let out a breath. “Vixen, I canโ€™t. I really canโ€™t.”

“Canโ€™t what?”

“I canโ€™t love anyone, especially not you.”

Sorry, butโ€ฆ what?

It wasnโ€™t just the words but the way he said them. As if loving me would be the worst mistake of his life, like he couldnโ€™t even imagine howโ€ฆ unspeakably wrong it would be. But I wasnโ€™t about to fall apart in front of him.

โ€œWell, then, youโ€™ve made up your mind.โ€ I swallowed back the bile rising in my throat, stepped away from him, and took a breath. “I suppose this is goodbye, then, isnโ€™t it, Dominic?”

A tear slipped down his cheek, but I wouldnโ€™t let it move me this time. I sidestepped him, twisted the doorknob, and left, my heart heavy and hollow.

Is this really it?
