โIโm here now. Iโll help in whatever way I can,โ I told him, every word laced with sincerity.
โThanks,โ Dominic murmured, managing a small smile before adding under his breath, โYou can help by staying completely out of it.โ
Of course heโd say that.
โAlright,โ I agreed, choosing not to push. โBut once all of this is over, donโt forget the holiday you promised me, yeah?โ
โHow could I forget?โ he replied, the words hanging in the air between us, heavy and slow. Those golden-brown eyes of his swept across my face. โThereโs something different about you.โ
Oh.
Here we go.
I ran my fingers through my hair, feigning ease. โYeah? What is it?โ
โI donโt know. I suppose youโre… glowing.โ
I huffed a laugh. โDidnโt you just say I looked tired? How can I be glowing and tired at the same time?โ
He only shrugged, but his eyes never left mine.
Dominic was still watching meโno, studying me. His gaze was searching, trying to find something I hadnโt said aloud. Something just beyond his reach. And he wouldnโt find it. Not yet.
So, I changed the subject.
โI met this little girl at Adriannaโs placeโsheโs absolutely adorable.โ
โYou mean Ally?โ
โYou know her?โ
โYeah. Adrianna probably told Everett, Everett told Rory, and Rory told me.โ He was still staring, still sifting through what I wasnโt saying. โSaw her on the telly too.โ
โXavier and my sister are thinking of adopting her.โ
โThatโs lovely.โ
โMmm.โ I shifted slightly, turning more towards him. The ceramic mug in my hands was growing too warm, almost scorching my palms. โDo you want children?โ
My heart had started to thump wildly in my chest, each beat loud and desperate. A quiet kind of panic settling in.
โWith you?โ he chuckled, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. โOf course.โ
I exhaled, a wave of relief crashing through meโuntil he added, โBut not now.โ
Oh.
Right.
No worries at all. Iโll just tell the baby in my womb to hit pause, maybe go hang about in someone elseโs uterus for a few years. Should be fine.
He doesnโt want kids.
Well, not exactly. He never said that. But he did say not now. The only problem is… I am pregnant. And I canโt exactly un-be pregnant, can I?
Panic was climbing inside me nowโfast, cold, sharp. My hands trembled, and I placed the mug down before it slipped through my fingers and shattered across the floor.
He probably didnโt mean it like that.
He just…
I need to calm down.
Breathe, Genevieve.
Breathe.
I exhaled slowly, inching closer to him until my head rested against his shoulder. At once, his arm curled round me, anchoring me, stilling the storm for just a moment.
โYou alright?โ Dominic turned slightly, inhaling the scent of my hair.
Yes. He still loves me.
Weโre going to be fine.
โMm.โ
โYou sure?โ
โYeah, of course.โ
He stroked a hand gently through my hair. โHaving children with you would be the third greatest gift life could give me,โ he said softly. โBut with everything going on… they can wait. Weโve got time, baby.โ
Heโs right.
I know heโs right.
โI know,โ I muttered.
โCatching Viktor…โ he paused, the name slicing through the air like a blade, โis the only thing on my mind right now.โ
โI know.โ
โAfter that, we can have as many kids as you want.โ
That… that was something.
I tilted my face towards his, meeting those amber eyes I adored. โAs many as I want?โ
He smiled. โYeah.โ
That soothed something deep in me. I let out a long breath and nodded.
Silence wrapped around us.
โYou planning on falling asleep on me?โ
โMaybe,โ I murmured. โIf I do, donโt move.โ
โWouldnโt dream of it.โ
โทโทโทโท
Itโs been two days since that conversation. The one where Dominic said he didnโt want childrenโnot yet.
It shouldnโt matter.
Only… Iโm already two months gone. And unfortunately, I canโt freeze my womb and hit โcontinue laterโ. Not how this works.
Abortรญon? Absolutely not. I couldnโt. I wouldnโt even let the thought linger.
In these past eight weeks, Iโve grown to love this tiny life inside me with a kind of fierce tenderness I didnโt expect. Iโve daydreamed about themโwhat theyโll look like, how theyโll laugh, how our home would echo with that sound.
And thenโbut not now.
Want to know the truly maddening part?
Itโs that heโs not wrong.
Viktor is the priorityโtaking him down, putting an end to the dangรฉr looming over all of us. Thatโs why Iโve kept the news to myself for so long.
I canโtโ
My thoughts were abruptly cut off as a sharp โNic!โ rang through the corridor, heels clicking rhythmically against the polished floor.
Aurora.
It only took seconds for the suspicion to be confirmed. She burst into the room like she owned the place, as per usual.
โNicโโ she began, but froze the moment her gaze landed on me.
Surprise flashed in her eyes firstโthose sunlit-honey eyes that always held mischief. Then joy bloomed across her face, radiant and uncontained, just before she flung her arms around me.
Laughing, I hugged her back, though she was squeezing the breath out of me.
โWoah,โ I gasped as she pulled away, still catching my breath. โMiss me that much?โ
โMeh,โ Rory shrugged, pretending to be nonchalant. โNot that much.โ But the grin on her face had spread like wildfireโfull of giddy warmth. โDidnโt even notice you were gone,โ she added cheekily.
โSure,โ I replied, smiling. โBut you noticed Iโm back.โ
She nodded. โYou look good.โ
โThanks.โ
Her gaze swept the room, flicking over furniture, shadows, cornersโclearly looking for someone.
โHe left a couple of hours ago,โ I offered before she had the chance to ask.
โOh? Did he say where?โ
When I asked, heโd just said not to worry. That heโd be alright. That heโd be back before I could blink.
โNope.โ I shook my head. โJust that heโs with Dex, Sal, and Lovelyn. Said heโd be back soon.โ
Roryโs mouth formed a little โOโ. โDid he say what he was doing?โ
Again, I shook my head.
She hummed quietly, lips twitching to the side like she was half-thinking, half-watching. โI wanted to tell himโโ
Then her eyes darted towards the bed.
To me.
Then back to the bed.
โAre you alright?โ she asked suddenly.
It wasnโt intrusiveโif anything, it was laced with gentle concern. But the question confused me. That is… until I followed her line of sight.
Oh no.
The paper.
Not just any paper. The hospital test results, clear as day, the hospitalโs name stamped in glaring red letters across the top.
Shรญt.
I made to snatch it upโbut she was quicker.
Rory grabbed it before I could and scanned it.
A beat passed. Then her breath hitched. Slowly, she lifted her eyes to meet mine.
Really looked at me this time. Like she was seeing a version of me sheโd never expected. Her mouth opened, then closed. No words came.
โWell?โ I asked, my voice low.
A blink. Then another.
โYou… youโre pregnant?โ
โThatโs what it says.โ
Not how I imagined this moment. Not like this. Iโd wanted Dominic to know firstโhim and no one else. Well, aside from Cora.
โThatโs…โ Rory looked back at the sheet in her hand, then to me again. Her expression softened into pure, unfiltered delight. โAmazing. Iโm going to be an aunt!โ
I let out a long breath, tension ebbing away just slightly. At least she wasnโt on team not now.
โHave you told Dominic?โ
โNo.โ
โWhy not?โ
โI suppose… Iโm scared.โ
โScared of what?โ
โOf what heโll say. Of how heโll take it.โ
โHe loves you far too much to react badly.โ
A soft laugh escaped me, but it fizzled into nothing. โI know. But still…โ
โGenevieve,โ she said, her tone firm but kind. โThis is Dominic weโre talking about. Heโs utterly obsessรฉd with you. Practically worships the ground you walk on. Heโll be over the blรณody moon.โ
โBut he said he doesnโt want kids right now,โ I murmured, unsure if I was defending his words or just bracing myself.
โThatโs because he doesnโt know youโre already carrying his child,โ Rory said matter-of-factly. โTrust me, Iโm rightโand Iโm always rightโheโll love this.โ
โYou really think so?โ
โOf course I do.โ She gave a theatrical scoff. โWhat he wonโt love is finding out you kept it from him. So… how are you planning to tell him?โ
โIโll just… tell him,โ I said with a shrug.
Roryโs nose wrinkled like Iโd just said something offensive. โGod, no. Thatโs so basic.โ
She paused, then lit up. โYou should do one of those adorable pregnancy revealsโthe kind you see all over social media!โ
I blinked.
Which one?
As if reading my mind, she said, โYou mustโve seen one that melted your heart. Come on, this is you and Nic weโre talking about.โ
I tried to think. Waited for inspiration to strike.
Nothing.
My mind was blank. Completely wiped.
โSeriously?โ Rory asked, incredulous.
โNot a single one,โ I admitted. โMy brainโs… broken.โ
โOut of the millions of videos youโve watched?โ she teased. โThatโs tragic.โ
I groaned. โIt really is.โ
โSleep on it,โ she said, already heading towards the door. โTell me tomorrow and weโll figure something out. I want to help you plan it.โ
โThanks. Iโll give it some thought.โ
โGood.โ She reached the doorway, but paused before exiting. โAnd donโt worryโI wonโt say a word. Not to Everett. Not to anyone.โ
I didnโt say anything. Just offered a small smile and nodded.
She slipped out, shutting the door quietly behind her.
And once again, I was aloneโleft with my thoughts, my heartbeat, and the quiet flutter of a life blooming inside me.
