โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

~ Genevieve ~

They say never to step on a lionโ€™s tail, as itโ€™s a sure way to invite oneโ€™s inevitable doรณm, often leading to a rather tragรญc demisรฉ. Only the lucky ones live to tell the tale, albeit with a few scars and scratches as reminders.

Margot Larson has foรณlishly trodden on the lionโ€™s tail, and Iโ€™ll make certain itโ€™s the last time. Iโ€™ve tolerated her for far too long. My silence must have led her to mistake me for a foรณl, and itโ€™s high time I correct that assumption.

Itโ€™s no secret that I despรญse school, but today I donned my Wednesday uniform with a grin stretched wide across my face. My hair cascaded down my back in soft waves, and I tilted my head slightly as I admired my reflection in the mirror, my gaze falling to the necklace resting against my chest.

The necklace, a delicate gold strand with a not-so-tiny dove pendant, has never left my neck since the day Dominic placed it there. That was long before I even realised Iโ€™d fallen for him.

It still baffles me sometimes that Iโ€™m actually in love with someone. Me, who always found the idea of love rather cringeworthy, particularly when it comes to public displays of affection. Goodness, how I loร the PDA. And yet, here I am, hopelessly in love with someone. Someone very special. My Dominic, my love, my soon-to-be perfect boyfriend. Mine and only mine, forever.

Sighing heavily, I slung my backpack over my shoulder and left my room. Luckily, Mum wasnโ€™t home, just Dad, so we had breakfast in near silence, exchanging only the usual pleasantries. Afterward, I drove to school, not without first stopping for my morning coffee.

As I pulled into the schoolโ€™s car park, I typed out a quick text to Dominic before stepping out of the car.

Me โ‰ˆ Already at school. Hopefully, the surprise you mentioned includes Margot looking miserable all day because her dear Daddyโ€™s gone broke. By the way, donโ€™t forget to think about me all day. winking face

โ€œWhatโ€™s with the big smile?โ€ Sloane asked, stepping out of her car at the same time, her expression both amused and curious.

โ€œWhy?โ€ I shot her a questioning look. โ€œIs it so strange for me to have a smile on my face on such a beautiful day?โ€

โ€œBeautiful day?โ€ She repeated incredulously, glancing up at the overcast sky before looking back at me. โ€œYou and I have very different ideas of what a โ€˜beautiful dayโ€™ looks like.โ€

โ€œOh? Whyโ€™s that?โ€

โ€œBecause it absolutely chucked it down last night.โ€

Of course I knew that. Iโ€™d stayed up late, reading on my Kindle after revising for exams.

My confusion must have been obvious, so she added, โ€œSo, itโ€™s not exactly a beautiful morning.โ€

โ€œI love the rain,โ€ I replied as we walked side by side down the path towards the schoolโ€™s entrance. Tucking a few stray strands of hair behind my ear, I continued, โ€œItโ€™s loud, sometimes dangeroรบs, but peaceful. Thereโ€™s something calming about it that I canโ€™t quite explain.โ€ Sloane was now looking at me as though Iโ€™d grown an extra head. โ€œAnd what comes after the rain?โ€

She stepped through the hallway door first, and I followed. Turning her head slightly, she answered, โ€œCalm?โ€

โ€œExactly, my friend’s friend.โ€

A contagious laugh burst from her, and I couldnโ€™t help but join in.

Sloaneโ€™s undeniably beautiful. Her shoulder-length brunette hair framed her face perfectly, highlighting her striking green eyes and the tiny dimples on her cheeks.

Honestly, she deserves better than Christian.

โ€œDid I miss something?โ€

Speak of the dรฉvil. My eyes rolled instinctively as I heard Christianโ€™s voice. He kissed her on the cheek before I even turned to face them, making me want to gag.

โ€œHey,โ€ Sloane beamed up at him, clearly enjoying being in his arms. โ€œNothing, really, we were justโ€ฆโ€

I cut in, โ€œArranging your funeral.โ€

Christian smirked at me, though I knew it wasnโ€™t sincere. โ€œIs that so? Shame Iโ€™m not dรฉad.โ€

โ€œYet,โ€ I replied dryly. โ€œThe key word is โ€˜yetโ€™, idรญot.โ€

โ€œI miss the day you werenโ€™t at school.โ€

โ€œAnd I miss the day you had your dentist appointment.โ€

That was two years ago, when he didnโ€™t come to school for a whole week after having his wisdom teeth removed. Heโ€™d whinged about how much it hรบrt โ€“ his words, not mine โ€“ and so I was dragged to visit him by none other than my best friend, Julianna.

That week had been absolute bliss, thanks to his absence.

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou two would make the perfect husband and wife,โ€ Sloane cut him off, her voice filled with teasing amusement. โ€œYouโ€™re always at each otherโ€™s throats. A classic enemies-to-lovers story, donโ€™t you think, Genny?โ€ She nudged me playfully with a grin.

โ€œAbsolutely not,โ€ I replied firmly. โ€œIโ€™d poisรณn him within a day, and Iโ€™d be a widow.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s if I eat anything you cook,โ€ Christian retorted.

I scoffed. โ€œYou really think Iโ€™d cook for you? Poisรณn comes in more forms than just food, you know.โ€

With that, I strode away from the pair, catching Sloaneโ€™s giggles trailing behind me.

โ€ขโ€ข

I suppose happiness really does have a significant effect on one’s day, especially when you’re anticipating something rather special.

My footsteps echoed through the corridor, the black boots I wore striking the concrete floor as I headed towards biology. The corridor was completely deserted; all the other students were already in class, except for me.

I may have been running a bit late, but it wasnโ€™t entirely unintentional. Alright, perhaps it was. But honestly, itโ€™s only a few minutes, isnโ€™t it?

No big deal, right?

I exhaled as I passed by the headteacherโ€™s office, only to double back when I heard voices. Voices I knew all too well.

Margot and Mrs Green.

โ€œWait.โ€ Margotโ€™s panicked voice came through the door, soft but clear enough for me to eavesdrop. โ€œWhat do you mean Iโ€™m late on the payment? Didnโ€™t my dad send it yesterday?โ€

โ€œNo, he didnโ€™t.โ€

Mrs Green adored her because, in front of the teachers, Margot was the picture of perfection โ€“ prim, proper, and polished. Her tone was gentle, and I couldnโ€™t help but roll my eyes.

Sheโ€™d never spoken to me that way. She despรญsed me, and believe me when I say the feelingโ€™s mutual.

โ€œB-but he said he would.โ€ Margotโ€™s stammer caused a sinister smirk to tug at my lips. โ€œLet me just give him a ring.โ€

A few minutes passed in utter silence; she was clearly trying to get hold of her father.

โ€œDad?โ€ A pause. โ€œWhat?โ€ Another pause, and honestly, my smirk grew even wider. โ€œNo, how can that be? Whatโ€™s happened?โ€ Her voice quivered with dread. โ€œExamsโ€ฆ I… Dad, this simply canโ€™t be happening right now.โ€

Except it is, and I canโ€™t begin to explain how satisfying it was to witness. Leaning against the wall, I waited for her to finish her little show. I donโ€™t often indulge in such pettiness, but in this case, it felt necessary.

Another few minutes of Mrs Green comforting her dragged on, forcing me to busy myself by inspecting my manicured nails.

The sound of the door opening made me glance up, and there she was, staring at me with surprise.

โ€œOh, hello,โ€ I said, overly cheerful. Her expression shifted from surprise to displeasure.

โ€œWere you listening in?โ€ she snapped, the nerve of her. โ€œHow dareโ€”โ€

I stepped closer, and that promptly shut her up, the grin still firmly fixed on my face. โ€œI may have overheard a bit, but thatโ€™s hardly my fault, is it?โ€

โ€œOh really? And whose fault is it that youโ€™re standing out here?โ€

โ€œI was on my way to class, then I thought Iโ€™d stop by to check on my payment.โ€ I paused dramatically, tilting my head with a mockingly sad pout. โ€œSomething you canโ€™t quite relate to at the moment, can you?โ€ I clicked my tongue, shaking my head. โ€œSuch a shame.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve no idea what youโ€™re on about.โ€

She could deny it all she liked, but I had Dominic Morozov on my side. Thereโ€™s no beating me.

Feigning confusion, I let out a slow, exaggerated hum. โ€œDoes this mean you wonโ€™t be taking the exams because Daddyโ€™s gone bankrupt?โ€

Margotโ€™s lips tugged into a frown, distorting her already unattractive face. โ€œMy dad hasnโ€™tโ€”โ€ Then it hit her. โ€œWait, how do you know?โ€

I offered a slight shrug, my wicked smirk remaining firmly in place.

โ€œYou did this.โ€ It wasnโ€™t a question; it was an accusation, and a fairly accurate one at that. She wasnโ€™t stupid, Iโ€™d give her that.

โ€œWhat? Did what?โ€

โ€œYou know exactly what Iโ€™m talking about, Genevieve.โ€

โ€œDo I?โ€

Margotโ€™s frown deepened into a scowl as she stepped closer. If looks could kรญll, Iโ€™d be six feet under with the glare she was giving me. โ€œYou utter twร t!โ€

โ€œMind your language,โ€ I warned.

โ€œAnd if I donโ€™t? Iโ€™ve no idea what youโ€™ve done, but youโ€™d better fix it immediately. Iโ€™m not interested in playing your stรบpid games.โ€

โ€œAnd you think I am? Oh, please. Iโ€™d sooner chew nails than spend time with the likes of you, let alone play games.โ€ I shot back. โ€œPerhaps itโ€™s for the best that your dear Daddyโ€™s lost all his money. We might actually get to see some character development from you. Oh wait, we wonโ€™t, because you wonโ€™t be sitting your exams.โ€

I saw it coming but did nothing to stop it. The sharp, needle-like sting spread across my cheek as her palm connected with my face, sending it snapping to the side. The paรญn shot through me, but instead of reacting, I simply let the sensation simmer, feeding the dark thrill within me.

I slowly turned back to her, a final smirk curling my lips. But this time, I let that smirk twist into something else, something dร rker. Like the derร nged psychรณpath Iโ€™m becoming, I allowed my expression to shift, my lips quivering as tears brimmed in my eyes. I blinked up at her, feigning fragility, playing the victim perfectly.

The game had only just begun.
