โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

~ Dominic ~

The next morning, I dreaded opening my eyes. I didnโ€™t want to. All I wantedโ€”craved, reallyโ€”was to remain here, tangled in sheets and serenity, with her resting against my chest. My forever. My calm amidst the chร os.

But, as always, peace is short-lived.

The sun was already glaring through the curtains before I had the chance to enjoy the comfort her presence brought. And then that wretched alarmโ€”one I certainly donโ€™t remember settingโ€”blared like a bloody air raid siren, yanking me out of sleep with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

Genevieve stirred beside me, groaning softly. The sound was faint and scratchy, like a catโ€™s mewl. Her brow creased into the sweetest frown, and for a moment, I very nearly muttered fuck it and pulled her closer, determined to stay here all day, world be damned.

But I couldnโ€™t.

Not with that bloody flash drive still unresolvedโ€”the one I wouldnโ€™t trust in anyone else’s hands. If thereโ€™s anything on it, I need to be there when itโ€™s opened. No room for tampering. No room for error.

My thoughts skidded to a halt when Genevieve tried to roll away. My arm shot out, stopping her immediately, instinctively.

Another soft groan left her lips as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes, her hair falling haphazardly across her face. I brushed the strands aside gently, letting my fingers linger against her cheek before I leaned in and kissed her forehead.

That did the trick.

โ€œWell, isnโ€™t it a good morning,โ€ she murmured, voice thick with sleep.

โ€œGod, I hope so.โ€

She held my gaze for a long moment, her deep blue eyes attempting to read the words I hadn’t said. Then she sat up, stretching lazily. โ€œIโ€™m absolutely starving.โ€

โ€œBrush your teeth first,โ€ I said, voice dry. โ€œThen shower. After that, you can eat.โ€

She narrowed her eyes. โ€œAre you saying Iโ€™ve got bad breath?โ€

I held my tongue, content to let her play whatever little game she fancied to keep my mind elsewhere. Truth be told, I welcomed the diversionโ€”anything to linger in this fleeting moment. And from the glint in her eye, that silence was precisely what sheโ€™d been hoping for.

And then she pouncedโ€”launching herself at me with a barrage of kisses, messy and chaรณtic, all over my face. I let her have her moment, grinning as she thought she had the upper hand.

Until I flipped her.

โ€œUnfair,โ€ she grumbled, breathless.

โ€œWhatโ€™s unfair?โ€ My hands trailed smoothly over her waist until they settled perfectly at her hips.

โ€œYou did it while I was distracted.โ€

โ€œExactly the point.โ€ I smirked. โ€œEven if you werenโ€™t, Iโ€™d still manage it. Youโ€™re light work.โ€

I hovered over her, hands dangeroรบsly close to her ticklish spot. Her eyesโ€”God, those eyesโ€”met mine with that intoxicatiรฑg blend of challenge and anticipation.

โ€œGuess what I want to do,โ€ I murmured.

A playful frown crept onto her face. โ€œDonโ€™t you dare.โ€

I dared.

Within seconds, my fingers were merciless, sending her into fits of laughterโ€”breathy, broken, uncontrollable. Her body writhed beneath me, every muscle tense from the assault. She tried to fight me off, legs flailing, voice hoarse from pleading.

โ€œDominicโ€”โ€ laughter and gasps tangled into one, โ€œIโ€™m going to pee myself if you donโ€™t stopโ€”bloody hell!โ€

โ€œSay please,โ€ I demanded.

โ€œJeez, please!โ€

I stopped at once. She rolled away quickly, gulping in air like sheโ€™d surfaced from drowning. I watched her, heart full, grinning like a fรณol.

The grin on my face when I look at her is undying just like my feelings for her. My love for her never diรฉd. Not when we were apart. Not even for a moment. Thatโ€™s how I knowโ€”sheโ€™s got me. Completely. Hook, line and sinker.

โ€œYouโ€™re such a bรบlly.โ€

โ€œYou love it.โ€

She didnโ€™t reply. Her expression betrayed nothingโ€”Genevieve, ever the poker-faced professional. China mustโ€™ve sharpened her game.

โ€œIโ€™ve nothing to wear,โ€ she muttered, inspecting the room.

โ€œIโ€™ll ask Rory to lend you something.โ€

Her face twisted, adorably disgusted. โ€œShe wears pink.โ€

โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œI hate pink,โ€ she replied flatly. โ€œYour sister dresses like sheโ€™s auditioning for a Barbie reboot.โ€

I grinned. โ€œThat was her inspiration, actually. She loves those films.โ€

โ€œDominic.โ€

Ah, there it wasโ€”the warning.

She expected a solution, not sarcasm.

โ€œSheโ€™s got cream and white too,โ€ I offered. โ€œSays they go well with pink.โ€

โ€œYay,โ€ she deadpanned.

Her sarcasm and accompanying eye roll made me chuckle. I shifted towards her, but she was already springing off the bed.

โ€œIf you tickle me again,โ€ she warned, backing away, โ€œI swear Iโ€™ll kรญll you.โ€

And with that, she dashed into the bathroom and locked the door.

God, I love her.

..

Half an hour later, Genevieve and Aurora were dressed and seated downstairs, tucking into breakfastโ€”pancakes and scrambled eggs Iโ€™d made myself.

Thankfully, Rory had found a pair of ash-grey sweatpants and a matching crop top that fit Genevieve perfectly. It was still chilly outside, so I gave her one of my zip-up hoodies. Rory even provided trainers.

โ€œHave you checked the flash drive?โ€ Rory asked, her tone casual but probing.

I shook my head.

โ€œWhat exactly were you doing last night, then?โ€

Out the corner of my eye, I saw Genevieveโ€™s expression flash with embarrassment, only to smooth out in the blink of an eye.

โ€œYou know what,โ€ Rory raised her hand, โ€œdonโ€™t answer that. I donโ€™t want to know. Iโ€™ve got plans todayโ€”and I won’t have anything to do with the flash drive business.โ€

Her disinterest in the drive didnโ€™t bother me. What did bother me was the plans. With Blade on the loose and the new player in town, I couldnโ€™t afford to let my sister roam freelyโ€”not even with bodyguards.

โ€œWhat plans?โ€

โ€œWhat, are you keeping tabs on me now?โ€

โ€œYes. What plans?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m meeting up with Jazzy and Leah for lunch.โ€

Of course. I knew those names. Her best friendsโ€”both of whom Iโ€™d had thoroughly vetted years ago.

โ€œIโ€™m also meeting Everett later,โ€ she added, far too casually.

Ah, yes. The boyfriend.

โ€œFine. Just promise me you wonโ€™t be reckless. Donโ€™t stray from your guards.โ€

โ€œSure. Whatever.โ€

โ€œRory.โ€

โ€œAlright, alright. Iโ€™ve heard you.โ€ She rolled her eyes, then flashed a sweet smile at Genevieve. โ€œTake care of him for me, yeah?โ€

Genevieve nodded. โ€œWill do.โ€

โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll take care of Everett for you.โ€

โ€œThanks?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€

โ€ขโ€ข

We arrived at the Base shortly after.

The room was cold, always had beenโ€”constructed from steel and stone, humming with low-level energy. No comfort. No warmth. Just control.

Banks of monitors flickeredโ€”some alight with CCTV footage and digital maps, others dormant, waiting. It was a place of vigilance and secrets.

Very few were permitted in here. Echo ran this space with an iron grip, and anyone who entered needed clearanceโ€”mine first, then hers.

โ€œThis could be a trap,โ€ Echo muttered, arms folded tightly across her chest. โ€œA bug. A virรบs. Something designed to fry every system we have.โ€

I dropped the flash drive on the table. The metallic clatter rang out in the silence.

โ€œWhich is why weโ€™re isolating it,โ€ I said, crossing to the far wall and opening a concealed panel.

A sleek black laptop emergedโ€”air-gapped, no network connections whatsoever. Paranoid? Maybe. But I donโ€™t do reckless.

I plugged the flash drive in.

The screen flickered. A password prompt appeared.

I hesitated, then typed: 223114.

A single folder blinked into view.

ะฅัƒะฝะดัƒะปัะฒัƒ Operation Bloรณd: Brร tva ะัŽะบัƒะฒัƒะผั ะดัŽะปัะผะฑัƒะบะธะฝะธ. Subject Target โ€“ Dominic Morozov.

Translation; Operation Bloรณd: Proposed Transfer of Brร tva Leadership. Subject Target โ€“ Dominic Morozov.

Echo frowned. โ€œWhat language is that?โ€

โ€œSiberian?โ€ Genevieve replied quietly, the words like frost.

I opened the folder.

Two files.

One video. One PDF.

I clicked on the video first.

Grainy. Black and white. Security footage. The timestamp read 18 January 2010. Fifteen years ago.

A warehouseโ€”Eastern European, judging by the Cyrillic signage. The frame captured a crude fighting ring, ropes tied to pallets, a single bulb swaying above.

Two men stood inside.

One of themโ€”bare-chested, wiry, savageโ€”was me.

The other was larger, broader, face half-shadowed. But when he stepped into the lightโ€”

It was him.

The Serbian. The same man from the photograph.

There was no sound. There didnโ€™t need to be. The violence spoke for itself. Brรบtal. Unrefined. Blรณod splattered. Fists collided with flesh and bone. Around the ring, indistinct shapes loomedโ€”an audience blurred by smรณke and shadow.

Midway through, the Serbian drew a blร de.

Echo flinched.

Even I leaned forward slightly, watching my younger self dodge with hairโ€™s-breadth precision. Iโ€™d been lighter then. Faster. But the fรบry? That hadnโ€™t changed.

The footage ended abruptly. The screen went black.

I didnโ€™t speak.

I clicked the PDF.

A dossier.

Name: Viktor Valdislav

Status: Confirmed Dรฉad

Last Seen: Istanbul, five years ago

Objective: Terminร te Morozov Line

It was thorough. Unnervingly so. Photographs. Maps. Intercepted messages. Bank records. Every path, every thread, led back to one name.

Viktor Valdislav.

Butโ€ฆ how? How does a person plan an operation of this scale and just dรญe?

Where the hรฉll does that leave us?

โ€œEcho?โ€ Genevieve asked quietly. Echo’s head turned towards her. โ€œCan you do a deep search on him?โ€

โ€œI already did. Dex mentioned his name, so I spent the night digging. Heโ€™s dรฉad. Genuinely dรฉad. His gang even recorded the fuรฑeral.โ€

Soโ€ฆ what?

Why show us this?
