โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

~ Genevieve ~

Viktor Valdislav.

That was our guy. Or rather, had beenโ€”since he was, you know, dรฉad. Or perhaps that was exactly what he wanted us to believe.

Still, the evidence had piled up, one after another, all presented by Echo herselfโ€”the best, and only, hacker I knew.

Iโ€™d seen video footage, chat logs, and photographic proof that Viktor was dรฉad. But something about it all felt off. Too clean. Too final. After all the effort heโ€™d put into trying to take down Dominic, could he really have vanished so quietly?

I mean, sureโ€”death doesnโ€™t exactly schedule itself, but even so, I was convinced Viktor wouldโ€™ve had some sort of contingency in place. A right-hand man. A sibling. Someone to take over if anything happened to him.

It had been six years since his supposed dรฉath. And nothing. No movements, no ripplesโ€”unless you counted the ship explosion.

Was he truly gone?

Or was this all just an elaborate ruse to lure usโ€”the Bratvaโ€”away from what was really coming?

Someone would have to be utterly unhinged to fake their own deร th and keep up the act for nearly six years, wouldnโ€™t they?

Maybe I was being paranoid. Overthinking things. But as a lawyer who also happened to have a background in psychology, something about all of this didnโ€™t sit right with me.

Iโ€™d been turning it over in my head for five straight days, ever since the truth had resurfaced. Dominic, on the other hand, had been acting oddly calm. Going about his usual routine like there wasnโ€™t a storm brewing under the surface.

And maybe there wasnโ€™t. Maybe I was just stuck in my own head, seeing shadows that werenโ€™t even there.

I kept my gaze on him, trying to read past the cool expression on his face as he poured coffee into a mug. Calm. Effortlessly composed. That was all I could see.

โ€œAre you hiding something from me, Dominic?โ€ I asked, my voice quiet but unwavering. He looked up from his coffee immediately, surprise flashing in his amber eyes. โ€œIโ€™m asking because youโ€™ve been behaving weirdly.โ€

โ€œBehaving weirdly, how?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s something going on in your head, and youโ€™re not sharing it with me.โ€

โ€œThe only thing going on in my head right now is how you wonโ€™t let me make my coffee in peace,โ€ he replied lightly, teasing.

But I didnโ€™t smile. Not even a twitch of one. And he noticedโ€”of course he did. He rounded the kitchen island and came to stand in front of me.

โ€œBaby, nothingโ€™s going on,โ€ he said softly.

โ€œI donโ€™t believe that. Viktor isโ€”โ€

โ€œDรฉad.โ€ He cut me off, the playfulness gone in an instant. โ€œAnd please, donโ€™t mention his name.โ€

โ€œNot mentioning his name wonโ€™t change the fact that heโ€™s up to something.โ€

โ€œA dรฉad man canโ€™t be up to anything, Genevieve.โ€

It wasnโ€™t just the name that made me frownโ€”it was the way he said it, like he was scolding a child for being naive.

โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ I said, pulling back. He blinked, visibly taken aback. โ€œBut what about all those calls youโ€™ve been making to Dex lately? What are they about?โ€

โ€œHis name is Dexter. And thereโ€™s absolutely nothing going on, Baby.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t call me that when youโ€™re lying to me.โ€

โ€œGod, youโ€™re making this harder than it needs to be,โ€ Dominic snapped, his voice rising ever so slightly. โ€œCan we not do this now, right before youโ€™re meant to leave?โ€

Oh yeah, Iโ€™d broken the news that I had to go back to China. Work was callingโ€”lawyering and renovation designingโ€”and to my surprise, heโ€™d taken it rather well.

Unnervingly well.

The only thing heโ€™d shown any concern over was making sure I remained in my bodyguardsโ€™ line of sight at all times.

โ€œToo late for that, now that youโ€™ve started it,โ€ I said, scowling. โ€œThe only thing Iโ€™ve been is worried about youโ€”the man I loveโ€”only to get yelled at. Why? Because I care.โ€

โ€œBabyโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t!โ€ I snapped, hurt and anger tangling in my throat. โ€œJustโ€ฆ donโ€™t. I know you, Dominic. Which means I know when youโ€™re lying to me. I swear, if whatever youโ€™re hiding comes back to bite us, I willโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll what?โ€

โ€œThis time, Iโ€™ll be the one ending it,โ€ I said flatly, holding his gaze. His breath hitched. โ€œIf you canโ€™t trust me, then what are we even doing?โ€

Pร in flickered across his faceโ€”undeniable, raw.

โ€œI trust you, Genevieve. How many times do I have to prove that I do?โ€

โ€œThen youโ€™re not hiding anything?โ€

Silence.

I scoffed, disbelief hitting me like a slap. โ€œYou canโ€™t say you trust someone and then keep secrets from them. Thatโ€™s not how trust works.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re leaving in a few daysโ€”โ€

โ€œAnd? That gives you permission to lie to me?โ€ I snapped again.

โ€œIf keeping things from you means protecting you, then yesโ€”so be it.โ€

โ€œKeeping me in the dark isnโ€™t protection. I need to know whatโ€™s going through your head, for Godโ€™s sake.โ€

I needed to know whether I was just being paranoidโ€ฆ or not.

โ€œNothing, alright? Absolutely nothing is going through my head. Itโ€™s a bloรณdy blank slate. Blade has vanishedโ€”untraceable. And Viktor? Heโ€™s deร d. And I still canโ€™t figure out who the hell the โ€˜heโ€™ is that Blade referred to. So noโ€”nothing you donโ€™t already know.โ€

โ€œAnd the secret calls with Dex?โ€

โ€œDexter,โ€ he corrected, as always. โ€œHe and Echo are just keeping me updated. But theyโ€™ve found nothing. Every lead they follow ends up a blรณody dรฉad end. Weโ€™re worriedโ€”Dexter, Echo, and Iโ€”but weโ€™re handling it.โ€

His voice dropped a notch, gentler now. โ€œThe last thing I want is for you to be worried too.โ€

Now I felt awful.

โ€œBut I donโ€™t like it,โ€ I said quietly. โ€œI need to know whatโ€™s going on with you. If I donโ€™t know, how can I be with you through it all?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re with me,โ€ he said, lifting his hands to cradle my face. His palms were warm, grounding. โ€œYour presence means everything to me.โ€

โ€œBut Iโ€™m leaving soon.โ€

โ€œThat doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™ll be leaving me. Youโ€™re always with meโ€”even when youโ€™re not here physically.โ€ His thumb stroked along my cheek. โ€œYour presence in my life is encompassing. You know that, right?โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ I bit the inside of my cheek, anxiety tightening in waves around my chest. โ€œItโ€™s justโ€ฆ Iโ€™m scared. You keeping secrets is what cost us five years. And nowโ€ฆโ€

The words caught in my throat. Heavy. Stuck.

โ€œIโ€ฆ I am scared.โ€

It frightened me, how much I loved Dominic Morozov. And because of that love, I couldnโ€™t bear to lose him again. I might have survived it once, only because I eventually came to understand his reasons.

But this? If it happened again, it would destrรณy me.

โ€œMy love,โ€ his voice was hoarse, low, and impossibly tender. โ€œGet your mind out of thereโ€”it wonโ€™t happen. Whatever youโ€™re imagining, it wonโ€™t happen again. I promise you.โ€

He sounded certain. Sincere. So I gave a single nod.

โ€œI was stรบpid thenโ€”and maybe Iโ€™m still a bit stupidโ€”but not stรบpid enough to lose you again. Not having you in my life would be the dรฉath of me.โ€

I stared at himโ€”at those beautiful, haunted amber eyes that blazed into mine. They didnโ€™t whisper, they screamed with love, with longingโ€ฆ with obsessioรฑ.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry for acting up,โ€ I muttered.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m sorry for being secretive enough for you to even think I was hiding something.โ€ His apology came in the same soft tone. โ€œIt wonโ€™t happen again. I swear.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

A small smile spread across his face. He leaned in, kissed my forehead, then looked toward the mug on the counter.

โ€œWell, now my coffeeโ€™s cold.โ€

I grinned. โ€œSorry.โ€

He narrowed his eyes in mock irritation. โ€œWhat do you say I take you on a date as punishment?โ€

โ€œOh, then pleaseโ€”punish me.โ€

โ€œOh, I will.โ€

โ€œAnd I will definitelyโ€”most definitelyโ€”not enjoy it at all.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right.โ€ He paused mid-step, then turned with a smirk. โ€œWait. Was that you being sly?โ€

I shrugged. โ€œMaybe.โ€

                                 โœทโœทโœทโœท

The date that night had gone exceptionally well. Too well, in fact. I was already missing him before Iโ€™d even boarded the plane.

It had been about seven, maybe eight hours since then, and now I stood at the arrivals terminal, waiting for Cora to come collect me.

She took her sweet timeโ€”it was only ten minutes, but jetlag made it feel like an eternity. When she finally pulled up in her Ferrari, I got in so fast it mightโ€™ve looked like my ร rse was on firรฉ.

โ€œSo what now?โ€ she asked. โ€œCan I call you Mrs Morozov?โ€

I turned my head and gave her a blank look. โ€œSorry, what?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t โ€˜whatโ€™ me. You went to see your prince charming and now youโ€™re glowing.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve always glowed.โ€

โ€œAh, I nearly forgot how much you love yourself.โ€

โ€œYou say that like itโ€™s a bร d thing.โ€

โ€œMe? Never.โ€ Cora grinned. โ€œSo, tell meโ€”how did your prince charming treat you to make you glow brighter than usual?โ€

Dominic Morozov was no prince. He was a king. My king. A villaiรฑ, yesโ€”capable of horrorsโ€”but no one, no one, loved like he did.

But I couldnโ€™t exactly tell her that. So instead, I smiled and said, โ€œLetโ€™s just say he was great.โ€

She gave me a cheeky side-eye. โ€œDoes he have a brother?โ€

โ€œNo, but she has a sister.โ€

She rolled her eyes, and I chuckled softly. Silence fell between usโ€”comforting, familiarโ€”as she drove us down the roads I hadnโ€™t seen in weeks.

I was back in China. The place Iโ€™d called home for nearly five years. But suddenlyโ€ฆ it didnโ€™t feel quite like home anymore.
