Susan was engrossed in her work at her office desk when her cell phone rang. Not recognizing the number, she felt a flicker of curiosity but chose to ignore it, redirecting her focus to her tasks. The phone rang again, and with a weary sigh, she answered.

“Hello, who’s this?” she inquired.

“Um, hi Aunt Susan, it’s me, Samuel, Jimmy’s friend,” came the voice from the other end. A wave of fatigue washed over her.

“What is it, Samuel?” she asked, her annoyance bubbling just beneath the surface.

“Please don’t hang up and don’t be mad that I’m calling from an unknown number.”

“Then just tell me what you want. I’m really busy right now,” she replied, irritation creeping into her tone.

“Okay, fine. It’s about Jimmy. He passed out at school, and we rushed him to the school clinic,” he explained, and Susan’s heart raced as panic seized her.

“What? Is he okay?” she asked.

“Not really. I hope you can come over and see how he’s doing. It would mean a lot to him,” Samuel said, and Susan felt a heavy sigh escape her lips. “Please, Aunt Susan, he really needs you.”

Later, at the hospital clinic, Jimmy stirred awake, blinking against the blurriness that enveloped him. After a few moments, he noticed someone sitting beside him and turned, surprised to see Susan there.

“Aunt Susan,” he called weakly, and she looked up, a warm smile spreading across her face.

“Oh, you’re awake,” she said, her voice filled with relief. Suddenly, he wrapped his arms around her, catching her off guard.

“Please tell me this isn’t just my imagination,” he murmured, pulling away slowly, their faces mere inches apart.

“I got a call from your friend. Why did you go to school when you knew you weren’t feeling well?” she chided gently.

“I thought I was getting better, but now I think I am, especially with you here,” he said, his fingers brushing against her cheek.

“Um,” she leaned back slightly. “I should get going now. You need to take care of yourself and finish your medication,” she instructed, attempting to rise. But Jimmy grasped her hand, pulling her back into her chair.

“Please don’t leave just yet; stay with me a little longer.”

“Jimmy, I can’t,” she replied, struggling against the pull of his words.

“Please, I just need you nearby for a while,” he urged, his fingers gently tracing her face as he leaned in closer.

Susan fought to resist his advances, but as his lips drew nearer to hers, she instinctively turned away.

“Jimmy, we—”

“It’s just the two of us here. I only want a moment with you; I’ve missed you so much.”

The air in the room crackled with romantic tension. He pressed a soft kiss to her cheek, sending shivers down her spine as he continued his gentle caresses—first on her forehead, then her nose, and finally, without hesitation, his lips captured hers tenderly. Though Susan tried to fight it, her body betrayed her as the kiss deepened. Jimmy cradled her neck gently, savoring every second, pouring his passion into the moment. Just then, the door swung open, revealing Mirabel, Greg, Taylor, and Jimmy’s friends.

They froze, eyes wide at the scene before them. Taylor smirked, having orchestrated the arrival of Jimmy’s parents after spotting Susan with his friends at the school clinic, unaware that they had expected Susan to have left hours earlier. Mirabel’s fists clenched in disbelief.

“Jimmy!” Mirabel shouted, her voice slicing through the intimate moment. The couple turned, startled to see the unexpected guests, and Susan leapt to her feet.

“M-Mom,” Jimmy called out, but in that instant, Mirabel felt her heart drop and began to collapse. Greg and the others rushed to catch her.

“Mira!” Susan cried, rushing towards her, only to be shoved aside by Taylor.

“Get away!” Taylor yelled, her voice dripping with disdain. “You’re despicable!”

Mirabel was hurried out by her husband, with Taylor trailing closely behind. Jimmy’s friends lingered, while Susan stood frozen, tears streaming down her face. Finally, she gathered her bag and walked away, leaving Jimmy frustrated as his friends moved closer to him.

Minutes later, Mirabel stirred back to consciousness, her eyes fluttering open to find everyone gathered around her.

“Thank heavens you’re awake,” Greg said, gently helping her into an upright position.

“Are you okay, Mom?” Jimmy asked, gripping her hand tightly. She turned to him, pushing his hand away in frustration.

“How could you do this? Why?” she demanded, her voice edged with anger.

“Please, Aunt, calm down. Remember your blood pressure,” Taylor interjected softly.

“She’s right. Just take a deep breath,” Greg added, his tone soothing.

“For heaven’s sake, Jimmy, she’s just my age! Why her?” Mirabel exclaimed, her eyes narrowing at her son, who let out a heavy sigh.

“What you’re doing is wrong, Jimmy. She’s going to ruin you. She’s just an old grandma hiding…” Taylor began, but Jimmy cut her off with a sharp glare.

“That’s enough! You have no say here, and no one invited you into this conversation,” he retorted.

“She has every right to speak. If she hadn’t called us to tell us what happened, we wouldn’t have known about the disgusting thing you were doing with Susan,” Mirabel shot back.

“It’s not disgusting! What you saw was an act of love and affection,” Jimmy insisted.

“What foolish love! You’re being manipulated by her. I will never allow you two to be together.”

“Mom, she’s your best friend, remember?”

“That’s exactly why I hate it. You can be with anyone else, but not Susan. She’s not right for you; you two are incompatible,” she declared with finality.

“How can you be sure we’re not compatible if you won’t give us a chance? I truly love her, Mom.”

“Never! I don’t want to see you near her again. She’s using you. If you care about me at all, stay away from her,” she warned, her voice trembling with emotion. A heavy silence fell over the room, and Jimmy’s eyes pleaded for understanding.

She settled by the poolside, cherishing a brief moment of tranquility while simultaneously speaking on the phone with her brother.

“I’m fine. How’s business over there?” she inquired, pausing to listen. “Um, yeah,” she replied, a sense of ease washing over her as she tried to mask the turmoil swirling within her. “Okay, I’ll talk to you later.” After hanging up, she exhaled deeply.

Closing her eyes, she sought solace until a voice, sharp and cold, pierced through the stillness beside her, startling her into opening her eyes. It was Mirabel, casting a venomous glare in her direction.

“How can you find peace with your wicked heart?” Mirabel spat icily.

“Um, I didn’t realize you had arrived,” Susan responded, maintaining her composure.

“You don’t need to know. I’m here to warn you one last time.”

“Mira, please, let’s discuss this. I understand you’re angry; just hear me out.”

“You are a terrible friend, Susan. You betrayed me by sleeping with my son—a boy who sees you as a mother.”

“I’m sorry; there’s nothing between us.”

“Liar! I saw you two kissing. Who are you trying to fool?”

“I’m sorry, I truly am. I deserve whatever punishment you wish to impose.”

“I just wish you could vanish. How shameless of you to pursue a teenager! So, this was your plan all along—to claim that no man takes you seriously, not realizing that it’s your own despicable actions that drive them away. They see how shameless you are, chasing after boys to satisfy your selfish desires, and that’s why they left you.” Mirabel’s words pierced Susan deeply, leaving her wounded.

“I’m sorry…”

“Keep your pathetic apologies to yourself. Stay away from my son and my family; you are no longer part of us. My son is not a plaything for you to use to fulfill your urges. Go find someone like yourself and leave us alone. Our friendship is over, and I don’t want to see your face around me again. If I do, I’ll expose your shamelessness to the world.” Mirabel’s eyes narrowed as she continued, “Now I understand why no man would ever want you. My son is just confused, but I know he’ll come to his senses, leaving you to wallow in loneliness until you become a miserable, shameless old rage.” With a disdainful hiss, she turned and walked away.

Susan sighed sadly, wiping away her tears with her thumb.
