Days slipped away, followed by a week, and Susan noticed that Ryan had ceased messaging her. Even when she reached out, there was no response. Concern began to gnaw at her, and she wondered if all was well with him. Mirabel paid her a visit, and they settled in the living room, sipping orange juice.

“Why has he stopped texting?” Mirabel inquired.

“I don’t know. I’m worried that something may have happened to him,” Susan replied, her voice tinged with sadness.

“Don’t think that way. Maybe he got busy or misplaced his phone,” Mirabel reassured her, prompting a heavy sigh from Susan.

Meanwhile, at school, Jimmy and his friends were gathered in the classroom, mingling with a few other students.

“Have you thought about seeing her?” Austin asked.

“No, it’s been a week since I last texted her,” Jimmy replied.

“Why? Does she know you’re Ryan?” Austin probed, and Jimmy rolled his head.

“I know she’s worried about Ryan. Seeing her messages breaks my heart, knowing how anxious she is.”

“Then tell her the truth,” Samuel urged.

“I can’t; it’s better this way,” he said just as his cell phone vibrated. He noticed it was the device he used to chat with Susan. “She’s calling,” he announced, staring at her name on the screen.

“Answer it,” Austin encouraged.

“No, we’ve never called each other,” he responded, and they all sighed. The phone beeped with an incoming message, and he read it, releasing another sigh.

“What’s it say?” Samuel asked.

“She wants to meet me at the amusement park at 7 PM. She said if I don’t show up, we won’t talk anymore,” he revealed.

“Do you want that?” Austin asked, and Jimmy looked both confused and weary.

***********

Hours later, Susan was at the amusement park, waiting for Ryan. She settled onto a bench, checking her phone repeatedly, but the silence was deafening. As time passed, the park grew quieter, with fewer people around, yet she remained hopeful, convinced he would arrive. Hours slipped away, inching closer to midnight, leaving the park nearly deserted, illuminated only by twinkling lights.

Just as she decided to leave after another minute of waiting without any sign of him, her phone beeped with an incoming message. Heart racing, she quickly glanced at it and saw a text from Ryan. A smile broke across her face as she read his instruction to turn around. Bursting with excitement, she spun around, only to be met with an unexpected sight that replaced her smile with surprise and confusion.

“Samuel?” she called out, bewildered.

“Hey, Aunt Susan,” Samuel replied, grinning as he stepped closer.

“Um, hey. W-what are you doing here? Are you waiting for someone?” she inquired.

“Um, not really, I…” He sighed, typing on his phone. Susan noticed it was a message from Ryan, and her confusion deepened. “I… I sent that,” he admitted, leaving her in shock as she tried to process the situation.

“Y-you what?”

“Er, I’m sorry. I had to lie to you.”

“Wait, is this some kind of joke? What game are you playing?”

“I’m really sorry!”

“No, you’re not!” she snapped, anger bubbling just beneath the surface. “How could you do this? You’re Jimmy’s friend. Why would you pull such a ridiculous prank on me?”

“I truly apologize. I deserve whatever punishment you want to give me. I didn’t mean to toy with your emotions; I just wanted you to know how I really feel about you. I knew you wouldn’t want me if I came clean.” His words struck her deeply, and tears threatened to spill from her eyes.

“Why does this always happen to you, Susan?” she muttered sadly to herself as she turned to leave.

“Aunt Susan,” he called, halting her in her tracks without turning to face him.

“Don’t ever contact me again,” she said, walking away and ignoring his pleas.

Samuel let out a deep sigh as she vanished from sight, engulfed by guilt. Just then, Jimmy and Austin emerged from their hiding spot.

“What do we do now? We used a lie to cover a lie,” Samuel said, frustration in his voice.

“It’s a good thing you didn’t show your true self to her; that would have been worse,” Austin remarked.

She returned home and walked straight to her bedroom, tossing her bag onto the bed before heading to the bathroom to freshen up. Without bothering to change out of her clothes, she turned on the shower and sat down beneath the cascading water, quietly sobbing and regretting the feelings that had begun to blossom for Ryan.

Meanwhile, Jimmy arrived home to find his father waiting for him on the couch.

“What happened, son? You’re home late,” he said, concern etched on his face. Jimmy sighed in response.

“I’m sorry, Dad. I was out with my friends,” he replied.

“What’s wrong? You look moody,” his father observed.

“Nothing, just school stress,” Jimmy muttered.

“Oh, try to take it easy,” his father advised, and Jimmy nodded. Just as he turned to leave, his father called him back. “By the way, there’s someone waiting for you in your room,” he said, a hint of mischief in his voice. Confusion washed over Jimmy.

“Who?”

“Taylor,” his father said quietly as he stood, grinning. “Good night, and use protection,” he teased, before walking away.

With a tired sigh, Jimmy hesitated for a moment before continuing down the hall. He paused at his doorstep, taking a deep breath before opening the door. Inside, he found Taylor seated on his bed, dressed in revealing nightwear, her legs crossed as she focused on her phone. She looked up as he entered.

“Hey,” she said, springing up to embrace him.

“You didn’t tell me you were coming,” he remarked, pulling back from the hug.

“Why? Do I need permission for a surprise visit? Besides, it’s been over a week since we’ve talked or seen each other. Are you avoiding me?” she asked, and Jimmy sighed, stepping away from her as he moved to his closet to change.

“I still deserve to know,” he pressed.

“Okay, fine. It won’t happen again, but you still haven’t answered my question.”

“Which is?”

“Are you avoiding me?”

“Why do you think that?” he countered.

“Because I barely see you. We go to the same school, yet it feels like we’re total strangers.”

“I’m not avoiding you. I just have a lot on my mind,” he said, retreating to the bathroom.

A minute later, Jimmy emerged, looking refreshed and clad in his pajamas. Taylor bit her lip at the sight of him, drawing closer and wrapping her arms around him.

“I’ve missed you,” she said, inhaling his scent. “You smell wonderful.” Leaning in, she pressed a kiss to his neck, her hands gently exploring his form.

“Taylor,” he murmured, trying to halt her advances.

“What?” she replied, attempting to kiss him again, only to be met with his resistance.

“Please, not today. I’m exhausted and need to rest.” He gently pulled away, moving to the bed, seizing a pillow, and then settling onto the couch, resting his head against it.

“Are you serious?”

“Good night, Taylor,” he said, and she sighed in frustration, taking a seat on the bed, her frown fixed on him as he closed his eyes.

The following morning, the family gathered around the dining table for breakfast.

“Taylor, dear, did you sleep well?” Mirabel inquired.

“Yes, ma,” she replied, taking a sip of her tea.

“That’s good to hear,” Mirabel continued.

“Dad, are we still going to the water park today?” Rachel asked, her eyes bright with anticipation.

“Of course,” he responded.

“Yes!” John exclaimed, excitedly.

“Can I come along?” Taylor asked eagerly.

“Absolutely,” Mirabel assured her.

“Okay, it feels like ages since I’ve been there,” Taylor said.

“Mom, can you call Aunt Susan to join us?” Rachel suggested.

“Yes, I’ll let her know later.”

“What about you, Jimmy? Are you coming?” Greg inquired.

“No, I think I’ll pass,” he replied.

“Why not?” Taylor pressed.

“I’m hanging out with my friends. You all go ahead,” he said, and they returned to their breakfast, the conversation flowing around him.
