A month passed, and Susan became a shadow of her former self, confined to her home, tears streaming down her face day after day. She barely touched her meals or returned to work. Her personal assistant made numerous attempts to reach her, even visiting her house, but Susan refused to let anyone inside. Jimmy, too, tried countless times, but all his efforts were in vain. She isolated herself from the world, save for her brother, who never failed to call and check on her. When he did, she would lie, assuring him that everything was fine.
Jimmy struggled to make his mother understand the depth of his love for her, but she threatened to take drastic measures if he pursued Susan any further. Hatred simmered between them, and even Mirabel’s parents, who learned of the situation, found themselves unable to calm her.
“Mom, I will never allow that,” Mirabel declared defiantly.
“She is your friend,” her mother replied, her tone measured.
“And yet she betrayed me by pursuing my son.”
“That’s not what my grandson told me. He said he pursued her,” her father countered.
“Wait, are you really taking their side? For goodness’ sake, this is forbidden!”
“Love knows no age. I understand that what Jimmy did was wrong, but we can’t blame him. He is simply drawn to Susan. Besides, she is a kind lady, and I know she will take excellent care of him,” her mother reasoned.
“I can’t believe you are saying this!” Mirabel exclaimed, her anger boiling over as she stormed away. Her parents sighed in her wake, and soon after, Jimmy, Rachel, and little John emerged from their hiding place.
“Grandma, Grandpa,” Jimmy greeted as he settled next to his grandmother, who enveloped him in a warm embrace.
“Don’t worry, my dear. Your mother will come to understand one day,” she reassured him.
“Do you really think so, Grandma?” he asked, a flicker of hope in his eyes.
“I know so. Your mother is stubborn, but she loves you, and eventually, she will have no choice but to accept your choice,” she said, sharing a smile with him.
“Thank you, Grandma,” he replied, his heart swelling with gratitude.
“Don’t worry, son. You have our unwavering support,” his grandfather added.
“Really, Grandpa?” Rachel chimed in.
“Yes, indeed. Susan is a lovely lady, and she and Jimmy will make a wonderful couple,” their grandmother affirmed, and smiles spread across their faces as they shared a moment of unity.
*Susan’s apartment*
Jude arrived from out of state, eager to surprise his sister. Unbeknownst to anyone, including Susan, he drove into the quiet compound. Stepping out of his car, he noticed the stillness around him, with only the security guard on duty. Puzzled, he approached the building and rang the doorbell, waiting expectantly. When no one answered, he rang it again, but silence persisted. With a sigh, he made his way back to the security guard.
“Excuse me, is my sister at home?” he inquired.
“Yes, sir, she hasn’t stepped out of the house,” the guard replied.
“But no one came to open the door for me.”
“I suppose she must be sleeping.”
“Is there no staff around?”
“No, sir, they only come twice a week,” the guard said. Jude sighed, when suddenly the sound of a car horn pierced the air at the front gate.
The security guard hurried to open the gate, and in drove Jimmy, parking swiftly before approaching Jude.
“Uncle Jude!” he called, and Jude’s face lit up with recognition.
“Jimmy!” he exclaimed, wrapping the boy in a warm embrace. “My boy!” They pulled back, and Jude marveled, “Look at you, all grown up.”
“You can say that again. When did you come back?” Jimmy asked.
“Just now. I came to surprise Susan, but she isn’t answering the door. I’ve rung the doorbell countless times with no response,” Jude explained.
“I’m sure she’s just sleeping. Let’s see if we can find another way in,” Jimmy suggested, and together they walked away, chatting animatedly.
Upon reaching the door, they tried repeatedly to open it, but to no avail. Just then, Jimmy spotted a tiny pin on the ground. Using it, he managed to unlock the door, and it creaked open, revealing the familiar surroundings.
“Wow, nothing has changed around here,” Jude remarked, his eyes wide with nostalgia.
“Aunt Susan!” Jimmy called out, but silence answered him.
“Let’s check her room,” he proposed, and they ascended the staircase together.
At her door, Jude knocked gently and called out once more, but received no reply. Determined, they entered the room, only to be met with a shocking sight: Susan lay lifeless on the floor near her bed, foam escaping her mouth, with a few pills clutched in her hand and others scattered across the floor. It appeared she had overdosed.
“Aunt Susan!” Jimmy screamed, rushing to her side.
“Sis!” Jude called, his voice filled with panic.
“Go get the car!” Jimmy cried out, and Jude dashed away, his heart racing. He cradled Susan in his arms, tears streaming down his face. “Please don’t do this! Please!” he pleaded, carrying her gently as he walked outside.
Jude prepared the car, and Jimmy laid Susan in the backseat, sitting beside her and holding her close as they sped off down the street, desperation on their faces.
-Hospital-
Jimmy and Jude paced anxiously in the lobby, their eyes darting toward the door, waiting for the doctor to arrive. In a moment of desperation, Jimmy called his parents to share the unsettling news. Before long, Greg and Mirabel burst through the entrance.
“Son,” Greg called, rushing toward him. “What happened?”
“I… I…” Jimmy stammered, panic gripping him as tears streamed down his cheeks. Greg enveloped him in a warm embrace, hoping to soothe his frayed nerves.
Mirabel stood silently, her expression unreadable, yet a storm of worry churned within her. Moments later, the doctor emerged, prompting them to rush toward him.
“How is my sister doing?” Jude asked, his voice laced with anxiety. The doctor sighed heavily.
“Well, she’s stable now. We managed to save her just in time; you were lucky to bring her here when you did,” he replied, causing a collective sigh of relief to wash over them.
“What happened to her?” Greg inquired.
“We found a significant amount of drugs in her system, indicating she attempted to take her own life… but,” the doctor paused, drawing their attention.
“But what, doctor?” Jimmy urged.
“I’m afraid she lost the baby,” he announced, and shock rippled through the group.
“Baby!” they echoed in unison.
“Yes, the drugs took effect, and we couldn’t save the baby.”
“What? My sister was pregnant?” Jude’s voice trembled with disbelief.
“Oh my goodness! Jimmy! You went that far with her? How disgusting!” Mirabel exclaimed, her anger boiling over as she turned to leave.
“What’s going on?” Jude asked, confusion clouding his features.
“Oh no,” Jimmy murmured, devastation washing over him as tears continued to flow.
“Doctor, may I see my sister?” Jude asked.
“Of course, this way,” the doctor replied, leading Jude down the corridor.
“Son, what’s happening? Was the baby yours?” Greg asked, concern deepening as he turned to Jimmy, who sank into a chair, guilt flooding his heart.
“This is all my fault!” Jimmy cried.
“Calm down and tell me what I need to know,” Greg said, sitting beside him. Jimmy exhaled heavily.
“The child is mine, but we didn’t get intimate; it was through surrogacy,” he explained, his voice shaky.
“Surrogacy? I don’t understand,” Greg said, bewildered.
“I heard Aunt Susan was moving forward with the surrogacy, so I went to the doctor and donated my sperm, asking him to use it for Aunt Susan if she came in. I guess he did, and now…” He sniffed, the weight of his pain evident.
“It’s okay, son. None of this is your fault.”
“I don’t think she knew she was pregnant. If she had, she wouldn’t have dared to take her life. But why would she even consider it?”
“Calm down, son. There’s a reason for everything that happens.”
“I can’t bear it, Dad. If anything happens to Aunt Susan, I don’t know what I’ll do.”
“No, nothing will happen to her. The doctor said she’s fine,” Greg reassured him, pulling Jimmy into a tight embrace as his son wept bitterly.
Meanwhile, Mirabel lingered in the shadows, listening to their conversation, tears silently cascading down her cheeks.
