A minute later, Greg, Jimmy, and Jude gathered in the room, anxiously awaiting Susan’s return to consciousness. Jude let out a heavy sigh after Jimmy revealed the truth.

“This is so…,” Jude murmured, shaking his head in disbelief. “I just can’t wrap my head around it.”

“Please don’t blame Aunt Susan for this. I pursued her; it’s all my fault,” Jimmy replied, his voice tinged with sadness.

“I completely understand, Jimmy. None of this is your fault. I won’t judge you for it,” Jude reassured him.

Another hour passed, and as Jimmy prepared to leave, he was acutely aware that the doctor had said Susan would soon awaken.

“Um, excuse me, everyone,” he said, turning to exit, but Jude stopped him.

“Where are you going?” Jude asked.

“I…” Jimmy sighed again. “I don’t think she would be happy to see me.”

“Why would you say that?” Greg inquired, puzzled.

“I don’t want to upset her. She’s been through so much, and I believe I’m the last person she wants to see.”

“Of course not! I’m sure she’ll be glad to know you’re by her side,” Jude insisted.

“It might be best if I step outside,” Jimmy said, and he left the room, leaving the others to sigh after him.

Outside the hospital, Jimmy found a shaded spot in the garden to sit down, releasing a deep sigh as he lowered his head.

A few minutes later, Susan stirred, gradually regaining consciousness. Jude and Greg rushed to her side as she slowly opened her eyes to meet theirs.

“You’re finally awake,” Jude said, relief washing over him.

“I’ll inform the doctor,” Greg said, hurrying out of the room.

“J-Jude?” Susan called weakly, and Jude took her hand, smiling warmly.

“Yes, it’s me. You have no idea how worried I’ve been,” he replied just as Greg and the doctor entered.

The doctor examined Susan for a moment, quickly noting that she was stable.

“There’s nothing to worry about now; she’s stable. However, we will observe her for two days before discharge,” the doctor announced.

“Thank you, doctor,” Greg said, and the doctor excused himself. “How are you feeling?” he asked Susan.

Meanwhile, Jimmy remained in the garden, resting his forehead against his arms, having fallen asleep. A gentle tap on his shoulder jolted him awake, and he found it was the doctor.

“She’s awake,” the doctor informed him.

“Oh, thank you, doctor,” Jimmy replied.

“You should go and see her.”

“Um, I will,” he said, hesitating, and the doctor noticed.

“Is something wrong?”

“No, nothing,” He replied, but the doctor saw through his facade.

“You know you can’t hide that mood from anyone. Anyone in your position would feel the same way. Losing a child is not easy; perhaps it was not meant to be, and that’s why it happened,” the doctor said, sitting beside him and placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry too much; another child will come.”

“I know, doctor, but can she go through surrogacy again?”

“Um, yes, if she chose to,” he said, and Jimmy let out a weary sigh. “Do you want her to go through that again?” he asked, and silence enveloped them.

Meanwhile, in the room, Susan wept uncontrollably after receiving the news about the baby.

“I didn’t know I was pregnant,” she sobbed, her voice thick with anguish, as Jude sat beside her, offering comfort.

“Stop crying; it’s not your fault,” Greg said, his tone gentle.

“It is my fault! I killed an innocent child. How can I ever forgive myself? This is what I’ve always longed for,” she lamented bitterly.

“It’s not your fault. You’re only going to hurt yourself,” Jude replied softly.

“I can’t,” she whispered.

“It’s going to be alright,” Greg assured as they continued to console her.

Meanwhile, Jimmy lingered by the door, listening to her cries, feeling an overwhelming sense of hurt and guilt. His father noticed him and sighed deeply.

Days later, Mirabel and her family sat down for lunch, Jimmy absent from the table. Greg glanced at her before returning to his meal.

“Aren’t you going to see Susan?” he inquired, focusing on his food.

“Why should I?” she replied coldly, not lifting her gaze.

“You should; she just got discharged from the hospital this morning.”

“I don’t care,” she shot back.

“Come on, Mira, she’s your friend.”

“Not anymore,” she retorted, prompting a tired sigh from Greg as Rachel watched the exchange.

“Mom, remember, she lost a baby,” Rachel said, causing Mirabel to pause her meal and shoot her a hard look.

Just then, Jimmy emerged, ready to leave.

“Where are you going?” Mirabel stopped him in his tracks.

“I’m going out, Mom,” he replied.

“And where exactly? I thought I grounded you from leaving this house, except for school,” she insisted, and Jimmy sighed in frustration.

“Mom, I’m not a kid anymore. You can’t ground me.”

“I will, because I’m your mother, and you still live under my roof,” she retorted firmly.

“Can you calm down and let him be?” Greg interjected.

“Let him be? Our son is going down the wrong path, and you want me to let him be?” she yelled.

“Like he said, he’s not a kid anymore.”

“Jimmy, go back inside. You’re not going anywhere until Monday when school resumes,” she commanded, and he sighed, reluctant to disobey her, before turning to retreat to his room.

“Mom, you’re not being fair. You’re depriving him of his freedom,” Rachel argued.

“I’m not; I’m trying to guide him the right way,” she replied, resuming her meal.

**Susan’s Apartment**

Jude entered Susan’s room, balancing a tray of food, only to find her seated on the couch by the window, gazing out with a somber expression. He sighed deeply and set the tray down on the table.

“Come on, sis, it’s time for your lunch,” he urged gently.

“I’m not hungry,” she replied, her tone firm.

“You have to eat. Remember what the doctor said, please,” he insisted.

“I said I’m not hungry,” she reiterated, her resolve unyielding. Jude sighed again, just as his cell phone began to ring. Glancing at the screen, he saw it was Jimmy and excused himself from the room.

“Hey, Jimmy,” he answered, his voice warm.

“Hi, Uncle Jude,” came the cheerful response from the other end.

“How are you doing?” Jude inquired.

“I’m good. I called to check on Aunt Susan. How is she?” Jimmy asked. Jude sighed once more.

“I must confess, she’s not doing well. She refuses to eat or take her medication,” he admitted.

“You have to persuade her,” Jimmy urged.

“I’m trying, but why not come over? Maybe she’ll listen to you,” Jude suggested.

“I can’t. I’m the last person she wants to see. Besides, I can’t leave the house; my mom grounded me,” Jimmy explained.

“Oh, I see. You could always call her,” Jude offered.

“I wish I could, but I can’t reach her. I think she blocked me from her contacts and all social media,” .

“This is so confusing. You two really need to make up,” Jude said, trying to bridge the gap.

“I don’t think so, Uncle Jude. I guess it’s better if I just let go. It hurts to see her suffering and humiliated because of me,” Jimmy confessed.

“What? You’re going to call it quits?” Jude asked, surprised.

Jimmy sighed heavily from the other end of the line.

Meanwhile, Susan, sitting just a few feet away, overheard their conversation. Tears began to trickle down her cheeks as she curled herself into a tight ball, staring into the distance, lost in her own thoughts.
