โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

~ Genevieve ~

By the time the sun had properly risen, casting a soft golden glow across the London sky, I was already up, dressed, and ready to head to my fiancรฉโ€™s house.

What? I missed the man.

He even rang me just as I was about to fall asleep last nightโ€”our usual nightly check-inโ€”but this time, it was also to let me know he knew I was in London.

Those loud-mouthed miscrรฉants I call my guards clearly fear and respect Dominic more than they do me. I practically begged them not to tell him. And what did they do?

They told him.

Absolutely betrayed me and ruiรฑed the little surprise I had planned. And while I was ranting about how upset I was, what did he do?

He laughed.

That infuriร tingly gorgeous jerk.

I shut the fridge with my free hand, a bowl of raspberries balanced in the other, and leaned my back against the island. Soft, hesitant footsteps padded down the stairs, their echo bouncing gently through the quiet kitchen.

โ€œOh, hi,โ€ I called out, spotting the owner of those dainty steps. โ€œSleep well?โ€

Decent enough greeting for a six-year-old, right?

She stood a few feet away, wearing one of Xavierโ€™s oversized T-shirtsโ€”so big it practically swept the floor around her little feet. Her deep blue eyes gave me a once-over before a small, tentative smile broke across her face.

โ€œH-hi,โ€ she whispered with a nod, her ponytail bobbing gently. โ€œYes, I did.โ€

โ€œAh, good.โ€ I nodded back. โ€œWant some fruit?โ€

Her eyes dropped to my bowl of raspberries, and she shook her head. โ€œNo, thank you.โ€

โ€œIs it just these you donโ€™t want? Or youโ€™re not hungry at all?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t like raspberries.โ€

โ€œOh. Fair enough.โ€ I turned back to the fridge and opened it again. A neat bowl of mixed fruits sat in one of the compartments, bright and colourful. โ€œWhat would you like instead?โ€

โ€œNothing,โ€ she muttered so softly I nearly missed it.

I spun around to face her properly. โ€œYou didnโ€™t eat anything yesterday. Youโ€™re absolutely sure you donโ€™t want something now?โ€

She shook her head again, but not with much conviction.

โ€œWould you come here for a second?โ€ I asked gently.

Uncertainty flickered in her eyes, a shadow of fear threading through her expression. But slowlyโ€”so slowlyโ€”she took a step forward.

โ€œMay I pick you up?โ€

It was the briefest flash, but I saw itโ€”gratitude shimmered in her gaze before she nodded. My lips curved into a smile, and I lifted her easily, settling her on my hip so we were both level with the fridge.

โ€œWhich one do you fancy, sweetheart?โ€ I asked as softly as I could, keeping my tone warm and careful. โ€œYou can have any of them.โ€

I picked up a blueberry and held it near her lips. Allyssa stared at me as if trying to read my intentions, and just when I thought sheโ€™d refuse, she opened her mouth.

My heartโ€ฆ honestly, it lit up like a lantern in the fog.

She chewed, slowly and thoughtfully, then swallowed, glancing up at me once more.

โ€œNod for yes, shake your head for no.โ€

I waited, holding my breath.

She nodded.

โ€œThatโ€™s lovely. Want a few more mixed in?โ€

Another nod.

I mirrored her expression, then turned my focus back to the fridge. โ€œStrawberries?โ€

She shook her head.

โ€œBananas?โ€

Another shake.

โ€œDragon fruit?โ€

This time, her whole face scrunched in protest, not just a shakeโ€”a full-on grimace.

I chuckled, unable to help myself. โ€œI hร te it too. Itโ€™s vile.โ€

And for the first time since yesterday, Allyโ€™s entire face lit up in a grin. It was beautifulโ€”warm, real, a little piece of sunshine.

โ€œWhat aboutโ€”โ€ I trailed off, scanning the fridge again with a low hum. โ€œโ€”apples?โ€ She nodded eagerly. โ€œGood choice, sweetheart. Green or red?โ€

โ€œGreen.โ€

My smile widened. โ€œHey, same! I love the green ones too.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re the best.โ€

I nodded in full agreement, feeling a surprising warmth fill my chest. Thisโ€”this momentโ€”was something special. Connecting with the little girl whoโ€™d soon be my niece. It feltโ€ฆ heartfelt.

โ€œIโ€™ll chop one up for you.โ€

She nodded, and I gently set her back down on her feet before slicing the apple into bite-sized pieces. After rinsing them againโ€”just becauseโ€”I placed them in a fresh bowl alongside the blueberries. Her big blue eyes followed every movement until I finally handed her the mismatched fruit combo.

โ€œThank you,โ€ she whispered, walking shyly to the tall island stool. It was, admittedly, too high for her little legs, and I watched with silent amusement as she struggled.

But only for a moment. Then I stepped forward and lifted her up, placing her gently on the stool.

โ€œThank you,โ€ she said again, letting out a tiny sigh of relief.

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€ I reached a hand towards her head, then stoppedโ€”hoveringโ€”unsure if sheโ€™d be comfortable with the touch. โ€œWould you like a glass of milk with that?โ€

She shook her head and glanced down at the bowl. A long pause followed. Something was off. She justโ€ฆ stared.

Then her gaze flicked to her hand.

Oh.

I turned quickly, grabbed a fork, rinsed it, and handed it over.

Her eyes lit up the moment our fingers brushed. โ€œThank you,โ€ she said again, this time smiling wider as she took the fork.

I smiled back and returned to my own bowl. We ate together in silence, peaceful and easy, until I noticed her watching me again.

When I looked up, our gazes met and heldโ€”like two oceans colliding. Powerful. Quiet. Deep.

I tilted my head, a silent question in my eyes.

โ€œYour hair,โ€ she said. โ€œItโ€™s pretty.โ€

โ€œOh. Thank you.โ€

โ€œWhat colour is it?โ€

I looked down, as if I didnโ€™t already know the answer. โ€œStrawberry blonde,โ€ I replied. โ€œEveryone else in my family is blonde, but apparently Iโ€™m stubborn.โ€

She laughedโ€”soft and low.

I opened my mouth to speak again, but my phone chimed.

Mine: When youโ€™re ready to leave, tell me. Iโ€™ll send a car for you.

A grin stretched across my face instantly. Ridiculous, but I looked like an absolute lovesick fรณol.

Me: Sure.

Then I typed again.

Me: Be ready in thirty minutes.

Mine: Alright.

I placed my phone back on the counter and turned to Ally. โ€œStill donโ€™t want milk?โ€

She hesitated, then nodded.

โ€œJuice?โ€

Another nod.

โ€œSo thatโ€™s a yes?โ€

She nodded once more.

โ€œRight. What would you like? Thereโ€™sโ€ฆโ€ I returned to the fridge, humming a nameless tune. โ€œApple juice? Orange? Pineapple?โ€

No answer.

โ€œStrawberry milk?โ€

She nodded instantly.

Well then. Easy.

Still humming, I poured out a glass and handed it to her just as footsteps echoed down the stairs. Both of us turned.

Adrianna.

She slowed when she saw Ally, then looked at me. โ€œYou twoโ€ฆโ€ Her eyes dropped to the fruit bowls. โ€œAre you hungry? I canโ€”โ€

โ€œNo worries,โ€ I cut in gently. โ€œIโ€™ve got to get going.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not staying for breakfast?โ€

โ€œAfraid not. I miss Dominic too much to hang about.โ€

โ€œOh. Okay.โ€

โ€œYeah. I was just waiting for you to wake up before leaving.โ€ I picked up my phone and walked over. โ€œGotta dash.โ€

โ€œAlright, but let Xavier drive you.โ€

โ€œNo need. Dominicโ€™s already sent a car.โ€

โ€œRight.โ€ She nodded. โ€œWell, while youโ€™re waiting, letโ€™s eat.โ€

She didnโ€™t wait for my response, just headed for the island. โ€œHow was your night, darling?โ€ she asked Ally.

โ€œGood,โ€ Ally replied softly.

โ€œEggs, Genny?โ€ she offered.

โ€œErโ€ฆโ€ I grimaced. โ€œNo, eggs sort of gross me out right now.โ€

โ€œWhat? You love eggs for breakfast.โ€

โ€œNot anymore.โ€

Adrianna gave me a look, suspicious, piercing. I held her gaze. She scanned me from head to toe, then shrugged.

I let out a slow breath, relief washing over me.

โ€ขโ€ขโ€ข

Sal was the one who came to pick me up. As usual, he couldnโ€™t shut upโ€”chuckling through his own jokes as he loaded my bags into the boot.

โ€œWhy so quiet?โ€ he asked as we pulled off.

โ€œBecause I donโ€™t fancy competing with a parrot.โ€

โ€œYou calling me a parrot?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ I threw him a deadpan look. โ€œWhat are you going to do about it?โ€

His lips twitched, but he didnโ€™t let the grin win just yet. His eyes dropped to my hand. โ€œNice ring.โ€

โ€œThanks. Your boss gave it to me.โ€

โ€œAh, good. Because if it had been another man, heโ€™d be dead.โ€

I understood him. But I looked at him like I didnโ€™t.

โ€œHeโ€™s m about you.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ I smirked, unable to hide how smug I felt.

โ€œWell done, princess.โ€

My smile dropped immediately. โ€œYouโ€™ll never stop calling me that, will you?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€ He shook his head with a grin that now stretched fully. โ€œNever, princess.โ€
