โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

~ Genevieve ~

โ€œWaitโ€”so youโ€™re saying you wouldnโ€™t mind at all if he proposed to you?โ€ Everett asked, sounding absolutely scandalised. I gave a small nod, and that only seemed to wind him up further. โ€œAs in marry him?โ€

โ€œEverett, yes. I am aware of what a proposal entails.โ€

Heโ€™d been on this topic relentlessly for nearly two weeks now, ever since heโ€™d officially met Dominic. If it wasnโ€™t โ€˜Why the hรฉll are you with him?โ€™, it was โ€˜Do you know he wants to make you his wife?โ€™โ€”always delivered with a grimace like heโ€™d bitten into something sour.

โ€œWhat do you even see in him?โ€ he asked, his exasperation thick and unyielding, wrapping itself tight around the words.

A smile crept unbidden across my lips. โ€œWhat do I see in Dominic?โ€ I could feel the warmth spreading across my face as thoughts of him drifted in like sunlight. โ€œAlright, listen carefully, because Iโ€™m not saying this again. Dominic might not look like a good manโ€”but he is. Beneath all that โ€˜pretentious gentlemanโ€™ behaviour you always mock,โ€ I added with a chuckle, โ€œheโ€™s kind. Genuinely kind. Sweet. Thoughtful. Gentle.โ€

โ€œAre we still talking about the same Dominic Morozov?โ€ he deadpanned. โ€œBecause Iโ€™m fairly certain โ€˜kindโ€™, โ€˜sweetโ€™, andโ€”what was the other one?โ€”โ€˜gentleโ€™ shouldnโ€™t be used in the same breath as him.โ€

โ€œWell, they are.โ€ My voice came out sharper than intended. โ€œDominic is all of that and more. Heโ€™s been there for me in ways no one else has. Doesnโ€™t that mean something? That your sister is happyโ€”doesnโ€™t that matter to you?โ€

He went silent. For a moment, he just stared at me. The tension in Liamโ€™s flat suddenly thickened, like a fog settling between us. Then he sank down beside me on the worn sofa, sighing as he did.

โ€œListenโ€ฆ itโ€™s not that Iโ€™m not happy for you. I am. Truly. Iโ€™ve never seen that light in your eyes shine this brightly before.โ€ His voice was soft but carried weight, like each syllable was carefully chosen. โ€œBut how do you expect me to just stand by and watch the same man who broke my little sisterโ€™s heart be the one to make it beat again?โ€

I turned towards him, meeting his gaze. His eyes were fullโ€”of worry, of doubtโ€ฆ of fear.

โ€œI was there, Dove. When you became someone I barely recognised. When the heartbreak consumed you. I was the one who sat beside you as you lay in bed, too shattered to speak. I heard your criesโ€”you thought you were whispering, but I heard every broken sound.โ€

His throat bobbed as he swallowed. โ€œAll I wanted was to fix it, to make you feel better, but you gave me nothing but those hollow, practised smiles. I nearly flew back here to knock him flatโ€”but you begged me not to. Begged. You even made Adrianna and Xavier promise not to interfere. So we didnโ€™t. We kept our distance. And now heโ€™s back in your life and Iโ€™m supposed to justโ€ฆ accept it?โ€

The memories came flooding inโ€”China, cold and distant. That first month when Iโ€™d cried myself to sleep nearly every night, when my chest physically ached. The weight of those nights pressed down on me now.

โ€œYouโ€™re blinded by love,โ€ Everett murmured, shaking his head before I could say anything more. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m terrifiรฉd Iโ€™ll have to watch you fall apart again.โ€

โ€œIt wonโ€™t happen again.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t be certain of that.โ€

โ€œI can,โ€ I shot back, more forcefully than I intended. His eyes widened slightly. โ€œThis time, I know. He loves me. He wonโ€™t hรบrt me again.โ€

โ€œHe didnโ€™t seem to struggle the first time,โ€ Everett said quietly, his words like a kรฑife wrapped in velvet. Calm, but cutting. โ€œWhat makes you think he won’t do it again?โ€

I stood up so suddenly the sofa creaked beneath me. โ€œI donโ€™t know, alright? I donโ€™t know! Blรณody hรฉll, Everett!โ€ My hands clenched by my sides. โ€œIf you hร te him so much, then why are you with his sister?โ€

โ€œBecause Auroraโ€™s nothing like him,โ€ he answered simply.

I exhaled, long and heavy, as the argument drained the air from my lungs. โ€œAlright, fine. Letโ€™s say youโ€™re right. But canโ€™t we at least agree heโ€™s not the villร in you think he is?โ€ When he didnโ€™t respond, I let out a frustrated hiss. โ€œPlease, Ever. If not friends, then justโ€ฆ be civil. For me.โ€

โ€œDoveโ€”โ€

โ€œPlease, Everett.โ€

He hesitated, then gave in with a sigh. โ€œFine. Iโ€™ll try. Just for you. And maybeโ€ฆ for Rory.โ€

My smile was instant and genuine. โ€œYou know, I like you with Rory.โ€

He mirrored my smile. โ€œYeah. I like me with her too.โ€

โ€œShe makes you happy.โ€

โ€œShe really does.โ€ His expression softened. The smile that followed was the most real Iโ€™d seen sinceโ€ฆ well, since before her. The One Who Shall Not Be Named. โ€œSometimes I think I donโ€™t deserve her.โ€

โ€œYou do,โ€ I said firmly. โ€œThe universe wouldnโ€™t have given her to you otherwise. And if you break her heart, Dominic will kรญll you.โ€

He laughed, low and genuine. โ€œYour double standards are honestly something else.โ€

โ€œOh, this isnโ€™t double standards,โ€ I smirked.

โ€œNo?โ€

โ€œNo. This is survival instinct.โ€

Before he could quip back, the sharp ding of my phone snapped my attention towards the coffee table. My chest tightened. I already knew it was bร dโ€”there was something about the sound that felt like a harbinger.

It was a message from Echo.

Not a private one. The group chat sheโ€™d added me toโ€”with Rory, Sal, Bladeโ€ฆ and me.

Echo: Blade got out.

Three words.

Just three words. And yet they knocked the wind out of me.

โ€œIโ€™m not stuck. Iโ€™m simply biding my time.โ€

His voice echoed in my head. Bladeโ€™s words. Bladeโ€™s promise.

Had his time come?

What happens now?

The air turned poisonรณus, thick with drรฉad. I couldnโ€™t breathe. Couldnโ€™t think. My lungs rebelled, my mind spiralling.

โ€œDove?โ€ Everettโ€™s voice pulled me out, grounding me. His brows furrowed as he studied my face. โ€œWhat is it?โ€

โ€œCora. She, umโ€ฆ just broke up with her boyfriend.โ€

The lie came too easily. Too smooth. But I latched onto it like a lifeline.

โ€œThatโ€™s why you look like someone just threatรฉned you?โ€ he asked, unconvinced. โ€œYou look like youโ€™ve seen a ghost.โ€

It is a thrรฉat. A threร t to the Brร tva. To Dominic. To Rory. To all of us. If Blade finds Himโ€”if โ€œHeโ€ wants the Brร tva as Blade claimedโ€”then weโ€™re all in the crosshairs.

โ€œIt sort of is,โ€ I said quickly, keeping my tone light. โ€œHeartbroken Cora isnโ€™t exactly a walk in the park.โ€

Please believe me. Just this once.

โ€œWell, alright. I should get going anywayโ€”give you space to deal with her.โ€ Everett rose from the sofa, patting his pockets as he checked for his phone. โ€œTake care of yourself, alright? And for Godโ€™s sake, pick up your phone when I ring.โ€

โ€œI will,โ€ I promised. โ€œYou too.โ€

He nodded and kissed my temple before heading out, the door clicking softly behind him.

And just like that, I was aloneโ€”with three words that changed everything.

โ€ขโ€ข

The drive to Dominicโ€™s house had passed in a haze. One moment I was bidding my brother goodbye, the next I was dressed, heart hammering in my chest as I sped through the streets with barely a thought, adrenaline making my hands tremble on the steering wheel.

โ€œDid you get the text?โ€ It was the first thing I said the moment I stepped across the threshold into his room.

He looked up from the soft glow of his laptop screen and gave a single, curt nod.

โ€œWhat do you reckon will happen now?โ€ I asked, though I already knew he wouldnโ€™t have the answer. โ€œWhere do you think heโ€™s gone?โ€

Dominicโ€™s gaze lifted again. He gave a subtle wave of his fingersโ€”come here. My feet felt like lead, but I forced them to move. I crossed the room and sank onto the bed beside him, the mattress dipping beneath us. The weight of my panic settled like a second skin around my shoulders, tight and suffocating.

โ€œHe didnโ€™t go homeโ€”his house,โ€ he said quietly, voice devoid of emotion. โ€œAnd if I knew what his next move was, I wouldnโ€™t be sat here, Vixen.โ€

I gave a slow nod and turned my eyes to the screen. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€

Blade was thereโ€”on-screen, seated and handcuffed to a chair. His face, bruised and bloรณdied by Dexterโ€™s fists, was already beginning to heal. But his eyes burรฑed, focused intently on the CCTV camera perched on the far wall. The footage was dated for the night before.

โ€œHow the hรฉll did he get out?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, my love.โ€

I dragged my fingers across my cheek, brushing back the loose strands that had slipped from my ponytail. โ€œSo what are you watching now?โ€

โ€œI feel like Iโ€™m missing something vital, Genevieve. And itโ€™s driving me mร d. Itโ€™s right in front of me, but I canโ€™t blรณody see it.โ€

I reached for his free hand, and he sighed the moment our fingers touched. He threaded his through mine and lifted them, pressing a soft kiss to the back of my hand.

โ€œI hate this,โ€ he muttered. โ€œI canโ€™t think straight. I canโ€™t focus. I canโ€™t even carve out time for you. The Brร tvaโ€™s in a messโ€”itโ€™s like everythingโ€™s crumbling around me.โ€

I should have said somethingโ€”anythingโ€”but no words came. I kept staring at the screen.

At Blade.

Something about him held me cร ptive. The smirk that didnโ€™t quite meet his eyes. The slight tilt of his head. Andโ€”most of allโ€”the repetitive tap tap of his fingers on his thigh, hidden beneath the table.

โ€œDom.โ€ My voice came out as a whisper, so faint I barely heard it myself.

I couldnโ€™t look away. The tappingโ€ฆ it wasnโ€™t just a nervous tic. The longer I watched, the more it began to feel deliberate.

Like a message.

โ€œHis fingersโ€ฆ Look at his fingers,โ€ I said again, this time louder, my voice quick and clipped. โ€œThat tappingโ€”itโ€™s odd, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œOdd how?โ€

โ€œOdd as inโ€”it doesnโ€™t feel random. Like heโ€™s trying to tell us something.โ€

Dominic turned to me, his eyes scanning mine, searching for logic or maybe signs Iโ€™d lost the plot. Then, without a word, he looked back at the screen.

โ€œTell us what, exactly?โ€

โ€œLike a code.โ€

That got his attention. His focus sharpened instantly. He leaned forward slightly, as though the shift would help him see clearer. โ€œA code?โ€

โ€œHave you checked his house?โ€

โ€œYeah. I went with Dexter and Echo, took a few of the lads. We turned the place over.โ€

โ€œFind anything?โ€

โ€œNothing.โ€

โ€œThen this tappingโ€”itโ€™s a message. And whatever it is, itโ€™s hidden there. In his house.โ€

โ€œBut why would he give us a code if heโ€™s working for someone else?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. Maybe he was ordered to. Or maybeโ€ฆโ€ I faltered, the words sticking in my throat.

โ€œYouโ€™re one of the clever ones.โ€ Bladeโ€™s voice echoed in my head.

โ€œOr maybe what?โ€ Dominic pressed.

I met his gaze. โ€œMaybe Bladeโ€™s still with the Brร tva.โ€

โ€œGenโ€”โ€

โ€œI know how it sounds. I know itโ€™s fรณolish. But thatโ€™s what my gutโ€™s telling me. Thatโ€™s what my heartโ€™s screaming.โ€

โ€œAnd whatโ€™s your head saying?โ€

โ€œThat we need to get to Bladeโ€™s house. Now. If he wants us to find something, it must matterโ€”to you. To the Brร tva. And if someone else sees the code first, whatever heโ€™s trying to show usโ€ฆ it could be lost.โ€

โ€œBut I donโ€™t even see the bloรณdy thing.โ€

โ€œLook properly,โ€ I urged. โ€œJustโ€ฆ look.โ€

Tap tap.

Tap tap.

Tap tap tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap tap tap tap.

The silence between us was heavy, thick with concentration. Then, slowly, Dominicโ€™s lips twitched into a faint smile. โ€œI can see it.โ€

โ€œWhat is it?โ€

Tap tap.

Tap tap.

Tap tap tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap tap tap tap.

โ€œTwo. Two. Three. One. One. Four.โ€ His voice was quiet but steady, eyes gleaming with something close to relief. โ€œThankโ€”โ€

His phone rang.

It was right beside me on the bed, and I caught the name before he picked it up.

Dexter.

He snatched it up and stood, posture shifting into something harder, colder. The voice he used was the one I knew from the Base. The Donโ€™s voice.

โ€œYes?โ€

He listened in silence, eyes narrowing. A few seconds passed.

โ€œI just saw it too. Meet me there?โ€

Another pause. Then he cursed softly. โ€œNo, tell her to stay back.โ€ A beat of silence. โ€œFine. Let her come.โ€

He ended the call and turned to me, eyes dark and assessing.

โ€œDo you want to come with me?โ€

โ€œTo Bladeโ€™s house?โ€

He nodded.

โ€œYeah,โ€ I said, heart already thudding harder. โ€œYeah, I do.โ€
