โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

~ Genevieve ~

โ€œHow did you notice it?โ€ Roryโ€™s voice was barely a murmur, as though she were confiding a secret. โ€œIt was subtle enough to go unseen.โ€

I glanced away from Dominic and Dexter, who were engrossed in a conversation too far off to catch, and gave a light shrug. Nonchalant. Or at least pretending to be.

โ€œWhat do you think the code means?โ€ she asked, casting a look over her shoulder from her crouched position as she rummaged through a low cupboard. โ€œMore importantly, what exactly are we searching for?โ€

We were in Bladeโ€™s house now. The drive from Dominicโ€™s had taken about four hoursโ€”oddly long considering there was no traffic. I had no clue why Blade had chosen to live this far out, when the others were no more than an hour apart.

It was like heโ€™d deliberately picked somewhere remote. Secluded. The house sat in the middle of an expanse of immaculately kept green, the kind that looked like it had been trimmed with nail scissors. A few trees dotted the land, swaying gently in the breeze. Inside, it looked rather normal. Plain, even.

Scratch thatโ€”it looked minimalistic.

โ€œIโ€™ve not the faintest idea,โ€ I replied, eyes darting about like a spy in enรฉmy territory.

My heart thudded violently in my chest, an invisible drumbeat of dreร d. My palms were clammy, the skin slick with either paรฑic or anxietyโ€”perhaps both. No matter how deep I inhaled, the unease lingered like a stubborn shadow.

โ€œYou alright?โ€ Auroraโ€™s voice snapped me out of my spiralling thoughts. She nudged my arm gently. โ€œYou lookโ€ฆโ€

The room tilted. My vision blurred at the edges and I felt nauseously lightheaded. I stumbled, catching myself just in time.

โ€œIโ€™m fineโ€”just stressed,โ€ I muttered, trying to steady my breath. โ€œCome on, letโ€™s check his bedroom.โ€

She gave me a lookโ€”doubtful, questioningโ€”but let it go with a soft hum.

In under two minutes, we were inside Bladeโ€™s room. It was utterly out of character. Total chaรณs.

Blade would neverโ€”neverโ€”leave his space like this. Not even with a guรฑ to his head. He was obsessively tidy. Once, heโ€™d had a full-blown outburst over a tiny stain on the barrel of his guรฑ.

So no, this mรฉss wasnโ€™t his doing. It had to be Dominicโ€™s people, tearing through it during their initial sweep.

โ€œDonโ€™t you find it odd?โ€ Aurora asked, flipping through a book sheโ€™d fished off the nightstand. โ€œHim telling us something after what he did? After stabbiรฑg us all in the back?โ€

โ€œI do,โ€ I said quietly.

There was something deeply unsettling about it all. Someone who betrayรฉd those who trusted him wouldnโ€™t just come crawling back with clues. Would he?

The what ifs raced through my head like sprinting phantoms.

What if heโ€™s lying?

What if itโ€™s a diversion?

What if weโ€™re being played?

What if itโ€™s all a decoy?

What if itโ€™s a bloรณdy setup?

I let out a tired sigh and leaned against the wall, too drained to ransack anything else. My gaze swept the room, scanning every inch.

โ€œI donโ€™t like this,โ€ she muttered.

My eyes flicked to Rory just as she whispered her own misgivings into the still air. She was knee-deep in the search for something none of us even understood, so focused she didnโ€™t realise I was watching her.

So I wasnโ€™t alone in feeling this way.

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing here,โ€ she announced, turning to face me with her hands on her hips. She was dressed in soft pink sweatpants and a matching hoodieโ€”oddly cosy for the tension that crackled around us. โ€œBlade wouldnโ€™t just leave something important lying about. That is, if thereโ€™s even anything to find.โ€ She flopped onto the bed with a sigh. โ€œI donโ€™t know what you and Dex saw in his finger-tapping. Couldโ€™ve been completely random.โ€

Random?

Even she didnโ€™t believe that. She was trying to convince herself, clinging to the narrative that Blade had betrayรฉd us, that this was nothing but a dรฉad end.

But I knew what I saw. That tapping meant somethingโ€”regardless of whether Blade was on our side or not.

โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ I said.

She blinked at me, stunned. โ€œI am?!โ€

Her voice went high with surprise before she schooled her face into mock composure. โ€œWell… obviously. I am right.โ€

I crossed the small distance to the bed and sat beside her, close enough for comfort but not intrusion. โ€œSince youโ€™re so right,โ€ I said, fingers twitching with nerves, โ€œdo you have any idea who he might be working with?โ€

She shook her head. โ€œNo. Could be anyone. Dominicโ€™s got more enemiรฉs than friends.โ€

โ€œEveryoneโ€™s got enemiรฉs.โ€

โ€œYeah, but Dominicโ€™s wouldnโ€™t hesitate to put a bรบllet through your skull.โ€

โ€œTrue,โ€ I murmured, nodding.

Silence descended then. Heavy. Suffocating. The sort of silence that made you aware of your own heartbeat. It echoed between us, our minds full of questions we didnโ€™t know how to voice. The kind of silence that screamed louder than any words.

โ€œGenny. Rory.โ€ Dexterโ€™s voice broke through the hush. It wasnโ€™t his usual cheery toneโ€”it was flat. Tired. We both looked over instantly. He gave a slight jerk of his head. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€

Roryโ€™s golden-brown eyes met mine, and for a flicker of a second, I saw itโ€”the same hollow dรฉspair mirrored in my own.

So that was it? Nothing?

Had I imagined it all?

Could I really have been wrong?

โ€œWhereโ€™s Dominic?โ€ I asked, the thought cutting through my haze like a blade.

โ€œOver there. Gazebo.โ€ Rory answered, her eyes already fixed on him.

โ€œI should bรบrn that f+cking thing to the ground,โ€ Dexter muttered, veรฑom lacing his voice. But beneath it, there was something else. Grief. Anger. Heartbreak.

It sounded personal.

Aurora scoffed. โ€œYeah, right. As if torching it could erase the fact that Blade was a lying bastร rd.โ€

Then suddenly, as if struck by lightning, Rory gasped. Her eyes locked with Dexterโ€™s.

โ€œThe gazebo!โ€ they exclaimed in unison.

โ€œWhatโ€”โ€ I started, but the words caught as they bolted, Rory slightly ahead.

With a breath of confusion, I followed.

โ€œItโ€™s here,โ€ Rory said breathlessly.

Itโ€™s here?

The clue? The code?

Dominic, still on the phone, glanced up in confusion. โ€œWhatโ€™s here?โ€ he asked, voice low, edged with curiosity.

Dex quickly gestured for him to hang up, before Aurora could blurt anything reckless. She, thankfully, caught on and rushed to cover. โ€œMy scrunchie!โ€ she said brightly.

Brilliant.

Although every fibre in my body screamed for answers, impatient and wild with curiosity, I kept quiet.

โ€œSorryโ€”got to go,โ€ Dominic said into the phone, before hanging up with a heavy sigh. He ran a hand across his face, weariness etched into every line. The stubble along his jaw shadowed him, lending him an edge that, somehow, only made him more attractive.

โ€œPlease,โ€ he said, deadpan, โ€œtell me I didnโ€™t just hang up on an important call for a blรณody scrunchie.โ€

Aurora beamed. โ€œYou didnโ€™t just hang up on an important call for a blรณody scrunchie.โ€

The sun was sinking, throwing golden slashes across the lawn. It reminded me just how long weโ€™d been hereโ€”hours spent chasing shadows and nothing concrete. Time had slipped through our fingers like sand.

And now we were freezing. The air bit at my skin, sharp and unforgiving. I silently cursed myself for thinking a sleeveless gown was a good idea.

Dex chuckled softly, stepping into the gazebo. โ€œWhatever Blade meant to show usโ€”itโ€™s here.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ I asked.

โ€œThis was our spot. After training. Every single day.โ€

Rory nodded slowly. Her earlier despair softened into quiet sorrow. โ€œWeโ€™d sit out here with snacks, drinks. Just… laugh. If Blade wanted to hide something, something importantโ€”heโ€™d have chosen here.โ€

The gazebo.

So this was it.

The clue was here.
