โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

~ Dominic ~

The sky was still dark when I left the bed.

Genevieve lay curled on her side, the duvet tangled loosely around her legs, her breathing soft and even. One arm was stretched across the empty space I’d left, as if she’d been reaching for me in her sleep. Sleep Iโ€™d only managed to coax her into barely two and a half hours agoโ€”with the promise that Iโ€™d wake her before I left.

I stood there longer than I should have. Watching her. Missing herโ€”even though I hadnโ€™t yet left.

She looked so bloรณdy peaceful. Like the chaรณs outside hadnโ€™t found its way in. Like there werenโ€™t men out there who might hรบrt her just to puรฑish me.

I didnโ€™t deserve her. God knows I didnโ€™t. But thatโ€™s never stopped me from needing her like I need air.

I was already dressedโ€”brownish-red hoodie, matching joggers, something warm enough for the early chill. Iโ€™d brushed my hair back, though I still looked exactly how I felt: knackered, grim, and not nearly ready.

My phone buzzed on the bedside table.

One of the guards. Car was ready.

I silenced it. Still not ready.

My gaze shifted back to her. Still here. Still breathing. Still mine. If I walked out without waking her, sheโ€™d be livid. Sheโ€™d worry. She always worried.

So I sat on the edge of the bed and gently ran my fingers through her hair. She stirred, a soft whimper escaping her lips.

โ€œBaby,โ€ I murmured against her cheek. Even half-asleep, she leaned into me instinctively.

I smiled.

โ€œVixen. Come on.โ€ I kissed her face againโ€”soft, coaxing. She groaned in protest, a sleepy whine rising from her throat, but then her eyes blinked open and found mine instantly. โ€œGood morning, my love.โ€

Her drowsy gaze swept over me, slowly registering the clothes, the silence, the hour. She sat up sharply. โ€œYouโ€™re leaving now?โ€

I nodded.

She looked toward the window. Still dark. โ€œBut itโ€™s barely daybreak.โ€

โ€œEarly flight, baby.โ€

โ€œArenโ€™t you taking your plane?โ€

โ€œI am.โ€

She frowned, confusedโ€”and a little bit hรบrt. โ€œI thought weโ€™d have breakfast together.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™re not eating until you land?โ€

โ€œI willโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t lie to me, Dominic,โ€ she interrupted, cutting straight through it. โ€œYou never eat when youโ€™re anxious.โ€

โ€œI will this time.โ€

She huffed. โ€œYouโ€™re such a terrible liar sometimes.โ€ Genevieve sat up, hair mussed, wearing nothing but my shirt and the storm in her eyes. โ€œIโ€™ll make you a sandwich or somethingโ€”โ€

โ€œBaby.โ€ I took her face in my hands. โ€œLike you said, Iโ€™m anxious. If I put anything in my mouth right now, Iโ€™ll throw it straight back up.โ€ I brushed the strands from her face, gentle. โ€œI promise Iโ€™ll eat once I land in Turkey.โ€

โ€œPinky promise?โ€

I laughed softly. โ€œPinky promise.โ€

Her feet touched the floor, and she stepped closer, arms folding around herself. โ€œIโ€™m not going to lie to youโ€”Iโ€™m scared. Really, really scared.โ€

God, me too.

Scared this whole thingโ€™s a wild goose chase. Scared Viktorโ€™s a step ahead. Scared heโ€™ll come for her. For Rory. For the people I canโ€™t lose.

Her voice trembled. โ€œYou will come back, right?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

โ€œBut you always say that,โ€ she whispered, voice breaking. โ€œWhat if one day you donโ€™t? What if itโ€™s today? Or tomorrow?โ€

I held her face again. โ€œThen youโ€™ll never know. Because Iโ€™ll find a way back. I swear it.โ€

Echo had traced one of Viktorโ€™s men to Istanbul. A financial transactionโ€”coded, buried, messy. But it reeked of him. Sloppy. Angry. That made him reckless. And reckless men left footprints.

Iโ€™d follow them. Even into hรฉll.

A tear slid down her cheek. Her voice cracked. โ€œIf anything happens to youโ€ฆ I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ll sรบrvive it.โ€

โ€œGenevieve,โ€ I breathed, aching, โ€œIโ€™ll come back to you. Even if I have to crawl.โ€

โ€œPromise?โ€

I nodded, throat too tight to speak. But she shook her head.

โ€œNo. I want you to say it. And mean it.โ€

โ€œI promise you, I will come back to you,โ€ I said, clear and certain.

Something shifted in her. Her breath caught. Then she nodded, slowly, eyes searching mine. Whatever she saw there must have steadied her.

Then I kissed her like a dying man. Because thatโ€™s what it felt like. Her lips clung to mine, desperate and warm. Her fingers fisted the front of my hoodie like she could keep me here with just her grip.

But I pulled away. Gently. โ€œStay safe, alright?โ€

She nodded. โ€œYou too.โ€

She sniffled and wrapped her arms around me again, tightโ€”so tight I could barely breathe. โ€œYouโ€™d better come back. If you donโ€™t, Iโ€™ll kรญll you. And then Iโ€™ll kรญll myself.โ€

โ€œUnderstood.โ€ I smiled, even though it hurt. โ€œJustโ€ฆ donโ€™t call or text before I do, alright?โ€

She nodded again, wiping her eyes.

โ€œGood girl.โ€ I kissed her forehead and lingered there. โ€œI love you. So, so much.โ€

โ€ขโ€ขโ€ข

The air outside was bitterly cold, biting through the fabric of my clothes as I stepped into the corridor. The lift arrived with a hollow ding that echoed far too loudly in the quiet.

Benji joined me without a word as I slid into the car. His silence was a comfort. I didnโ€™t want words.

London was waking up. So was Istanbul. Somewhere in that fractured city, a man existed who might be the thread that led me back to Viktor.

Iโ€™d pull it until the bastard unraveled.

                                   โœทโœทโœทโœท

Now โ€“ Bodrum, Turkey.

The coastal wind lashed at meโ€”sharp, salt-heavy, tugging at my coat. Waves slammed into the rocks below with relentless fury as I moved up the path in silence.

I had eyes on the man.

He was just ahead, moving with the awkward caution of someone who suspects heโ€™s being followed but doesnโ€™t want to believe it. Not yet.

Let him stew in it.

Let the feร r crawl up his spine.

I couldโ€™ve taken him there. One shรณt. Done. But I needed answers. I needed Viktor. I needed this bร stard alive.

He disappeared into an old shed at the edge of the cliff. Disused. Perfect.

I crouched behind a crumbling wall. My pulse was steady. Breath even. And then, a whisperโ€”not out loud. In my head.

โ€œPleaseโ€ฆ be safe.โ€ Her voice. Soft. Fractured.

I pushed it down.

I had a job to do.

I crept forward, pressing myself against the wall of the shed. Inside, I could hear himโ€”muttering in Russian, tense. Paranoid. Good. He was afraid.

He should be.

I caught Viktorโ€™s name. And something else: tomorrow.

Planning a strike?

A shipment?

Something worse?

I kicked the door in. He froze. Reached for something.

Wrong move.

I slammed him against the wall, wrenched the weร pon from his grip, pressed my forearm to his throat.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Viktor?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™tโ€”โ€

Wrong answer.

I hรญt him again, harder. โ€œTry again.โ€

He spat bloรณd. Laughed. โ€œShoรณt. Heโ€™ll do the same to your little girlfriend.โ€ His eyes glittered. โ€œOh wait. Fiancรฉe, isnโ€™t it? Or maybe heโ€™ll go for your sister.โ€

Ice slid through my veins.

โ€œWhatโ€™s he planning?โ€

The bastร rd hesitated. โ€œSomething big.โ€

Thenโ€”I heard it. Click.

Suppressor.

Snรญper.

I yanked him sideways as the bullรฉt skimmed his shoulder. Another one missed me.

I ducked out the back, firรฉd twice. No body. No sniper. Just shadows.

This wasnโ€™t an assassinatรญon. It was a warning.

A taunt.

I cรบrsed under my breath and pulled out my phone, fingers shaking.

Me: Iโ€™m done here, so Iโ€™m heading back to London. Please, Genevieveโ€”pleaseโ€”donโ€™t ever, and I repeat, ever stray from your securityโ€™s path.

Then to Rory.

Me: Iโ€™ll be home in a few hours. If you need to go out, stay in your guardโ€™s line of sight. Got it?

No replies needed.

Theyโ€™d listen. Theyโ€™d trust me.

The crunch of footsteps on gravel reached my ears, and I turned to see Benji and the other five men approaching, breath coming in heavy, uneven bursts.

โ€œDid you catch him?โ€ I asked.

โ€œYes, Boss,โ€ Benji replied, the first to speak while the others stood in silence, heads bowed, eyes deliberately avoiding mine. โ€œBut he managed to get hold of one of our gรบns. Shรณt himself.โ€ He dropped his gaze before adding quietly, โ€œHeโ€™s deร d.โ€

Dรฉad.

My blรณody lead to Viktorโ€”gone, just like that.

Dร mn it.

Iโ€™ll give him thisโ€”his men’s loyalty are unwaveringly strong. Suicidร lly so.

But then againโ€ฆ so is my determination to get my hands on him.

And the question now is: how long can he really hide?

I donโ€™t care how long he hides. Iโ€™ll find him.

Even if itโ€™s the last thing I ever do.
