~ Genevieve ~

“What if I say I do?” Dominic’s low, gravelly voice caused the corners of my lips to curl into a smirk.

Oh, darling, I know that. Everyone wants me, but not everyone can have me. That’s why he ought to consider himself exceedingly fortunate to be desired by Genevieve King.

“Then I shall tell you that you need to make a decision.” I replied, lifting my wine glass to inspect it before taking a delicate sip, maintaining eye contact. After placing it back on the table, I continued, “Do you want me, or donโ€™t you?”

Dominic was the first to break eye contact, casting his gaze down at his plate. I watched him intently as he expertly sliced through his steak and popped a piece into his mouth. Silence enveloped us as he chewed.

He isn’t going to answer.

He’s probably just going to change the subject.

“Was that your boyfriend earlier?”

I knew it. Classic Dominic.

“He wishes,” I retorted scornfully, my disdain aimed squarely at Liam. “Do you think if I werenโ€™t single, Iโ€™d be here with you? Or chasing after you?”

He flashed that smile of his that makes him look so innocent. “You’re chasing me?”

“Yes, I am. And I always get what I want.”

“How can you be so certain youโ€™ll get me?”

“Because I have you right where I want you. I mean, you took me out for dinner.”

A smirk spread across his face, almost catching me off guard. “Don’t get too special. I’ve done that with other girls before.”

Which girls?

Control yourself, Genevieve.

I allowed an unaffected smile to dance across my face as I feigned nonchalance. “Really?” He nodded. “But have you given them a nickname? Or do you get jealous when another guy has his hands all over her, wanting her? Do you feel breathless whenever they flirt with you?”

He was clearly affected by my words, struggling to keep a straight face. Dominic chuckled lightly, running his fingers through my styled hair. “You certainly know how to flatter yourself, donโ€™t you?”

“You and I both know Iโ€™m not flattering myself.”

“I wasn’t jealous, nor will I ever be.”

“Really?” My tone dared him, and I was sure he noticed.

“Alright, letโ€™s say I was jealous, what…”

“You were,” I interrupted, cutting off whatever he intended to say.

“What would you gain from โ€˜my jealousyโ€™?”

I tried to suppress my annoyance at his denial and simply replied, “You.”

“Christ,” Dominic murmured under his breath, his eyes shutting as he exhaled heavily.

From that point on, the conversation flowed easily without any further teasing on my part. After all, if I continued to provoke him, he might not make it out alive tonight.

Dinner concluded, and I was grateful he had chosen this place, as I cannot afford a scร ndal right nowโ€”or ever.

I discovered something interesting tonight: Dominic never eats dessert; he claims to despรญse it. That’s no way to live, so I made a vow to make him taste it at least once very soon.

As Dominic and I walked side by side to exit the restaurant, the heavens opened up above us. The rain had been forecasted, so I wasn’t surprised.

Dominic looked up and hissed, “Blรณody hรฉll.”

“What, do you hร te the rain?”

“English rain, yes.”

“Why?”

“It rains all the time.”

“No, it doesn’t,” I defended sharply.

Just because we have little to no sunshine for most of the year doesn’t mean my country is perpetually drenched.

It does.

Shut up.

“Look at you being a patriotic citizen. Isnโ€™t that adorable?”

“Donโ€™t call me adorable.” I snapped, just as a shiver ran down my spine. My eyes remained fixed on him as I pinned him with one of my many glares.

No matter how hard I tried, I could never have predicted the next move Dominic made. My mouth fell open as he shrugged off his suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders.

Clichรฉ, but it took my breath away.

“Looks like I also make you breathless.”

Did he just flirt with me?

He opened the car door for me, and I climbed in. I waited for him to enter before saying, “I wasn’t denying it before, Dominic.”

“Good to know.”

I hissed, frustrated that my hair had gotten wet from the rain. Dominic appeared to be enjoying himself, his dazzling amber eyes sparkling as they focused solely on me.

“Dominic, this isn’t amusing.”

“Am I laughing?” He smirked. “Look on the bright side; you look beautiful with wet hair.”

Donโ€™t react.

Donโ€™t react.

“Does that mean I’m not beautiful with dry hair?”

Dominic scoffed, his eyes never leaving mine. “I don’t think that’s possible.”

“What’s not possible?”

Will he say it?

I doubt it.

“That you can ever not be beautiful.” He did say it and pretended like it was nothing. After turning on the car’s heating, he drove off.

I waited for my heart to stop its excessive beating, looking everywhere but at him.

“Dom?” I finally broke the silence when a thought popped into my head.

“Yeah?”

“What were you doing at the club?”

“It’s my club.”

“That’s nice, but that wasn’t what I asked.”

He looked at me, slightly surprised, and I just stared back. “Why should I tell you?”

“Why shouldn’t you? You practically dragged me out of the club.”

“I didn’t.”

“Yes, you did. Answer me, Dominic.”

“It’s mร fia-related.”

“Hmm.”

“What?”

I shrugged. “Nothing.”

                               โœงโœงโœงโœง

Today was a Saturday, usually my day to binge-read because I had nothing better to do. Once I finished my assignments and projects, I settled down with a book.

As always, my parents werenโ€™t home, and while I was used to it, it sometimes got a bit lonely. I love and hate the loneliness. Is it so wrong for a child to want and miss their parents?

One book down, I decided to head out for a coffee. When I arrived at the cafรฉ, I ordered my usual black coffee and a blueberry muffin.

It’s the best combo, and you can argue with the wall if you disagree.

My phone rang in my hand, and half of my boredom instantly vanished at the caller ID.

It was Adrianna.

“Hey,” I chirped happily.

“Hi,” she replied. “How are you doing?”

“Not being a puppet, you?” I regretted the words as soon as they left my mouth. “Iโ€™m sorry.”

“It’s fine. It’s not like I expected you to understand.”

She isn’t trying to say Iโ€™m immature, right?

“Whatโ€™s that supposed to mean?”

“Bye.”

I knew I had upset her, but I didnโ€™t lie. All she does is be a flippรญng puppet; itโ€™s annoying.

Maybe youโ€™re just jealous of constantly being compared to her.

Iโ€™m not jealous of her.

You sure? Because it looks like you are.

Shut up.

I abruptly stood up, wanting to leave because I felt constricted. It was becoming harder to inhale or exhale, and to make matters worse, someone bumped into me.

“Watch it.” An annoyingly familiar feminine voice snapped as if I was at fault.

And because of how much I loร the her, my pรกnic attร ck put itself on hold as I looked up from my stained outfit to glare at her.

“Excuse me?”

“You are excused.” Margot sassed, eyeing me as if she were in any way superior. “You should watch where youโ€™re going.”

“You should say that to yourself.”

Her face scrunched up with whatever emotion she was feeling. “Are you saying I’m at fault, Genevieve?”

“Yes, maggot, thatโ€™s exactly what Iโ€™m saying. Are you going to deny it?”

“My name is Margot.”

“Isnโ€™t that what I said?”

“You called me maggot.”

“Isnโ€™t that your name?”

“Youโ€™re such a bรญ+ch, you know that?”

“I do know that. But do you know youโ€™re a little, pathetรญc, attention-seeking troublemร ker?”

“How dare you?”

“No, how dare you?” I snapped back. “Have you forgotten your place?”

“What, will you tell Grandfather to expel me from school?” Margot taunted.

And although everyoneโ€™s eyes were on us and I didn’t want to cause a scene, I wanted to bร at her black and blue until she became colourblind.

“Thatโ€™s where youโ€™re wrong,” I stepped closer and leaned down to whisper in her ear. “I donโ€™t need my last name to absolutely destroy you. You donโ€™t want to mess with me, maggot.”

“Are you threateรฑing me?”

I shrugged. “If you want to call it that, then go ahead.” I walked out as quickly as possible, aรฑgry that I couldn’t even land a puรฑch because of all those people.

Thatโ€™s why I hร te people; theyโ€™re everywhere, for goodness’ sake.
