Daddy’s Little Girl – Episode 1

I looked up from the news paper in my hand, I watched as she jumped from end to end while whispering to herself.
She struggled severally with what she was doing and almost fell
“Zena, be careful there..” I called out
“Yes daddy, I’m playing the circus game I learnt in school. Our school is hosting a competition by next week…”
“…I usually play with Kira my friend and also Ludina, I have never won before..” she said as her facial expression changed to sad.
I asked her to come over and she did.
I lifted her to my lap
“Why is that..? I asked a bit worried after seeing her look.
“I don’t know daddy, probably because I’m not good with alot of things. Ludina àlways win and sometimes Kira too, even some of my classmates have had their turn winning except me. I guess they will be selected for the interhouse sport game by next week..”
“Maybe is not your turn yet to win, that shouldn’t make you sad Zena..”
“But I’m sad, they didn’t want to add me to the game yesterday because I wasn’t a strong opponent that they can compete with. They see me as a loser. I was standing and watching them play today…
“…no one wanted me to be on their team not even Kira, it was when the game was about to end that Kira asked me to join but I was scāred of loosing and told her I didn’t want to play…
She sighed and continued
“.. Dad did you know what Kira did, she appeared relieved when I didn’t agree to play, Meaning she never wanted me to join her team but asked me to join anyway out of pity. She was happy when I didn’t play…”
I swallowed hard hearing the sad pain from her voice.
“We’re going to play this circus game and even if It requires canceling my tomorrow appointment, I will do that. I want to make sure you’re good and ready to beat your friends. How does that sound?
“Great… fantastic…” She replied giggling.
‘”that’s my girl..” I said drawing her into a hug.
“If I win even if is just once dad, they may include me in the school general game competition. Kira will be so happy, she will be so impress and Ludina too won’t make jest of me during the game..” she said as she went back to her game asking me to join her right away.
I dropped the paper in my hand and quickly did.
It’s time to play.
She thought me how’s it’s done and in no time we were both competing.
We practiced none stop and even the following day
I decided to stay home and make sure Zena was good at the game
No one belittles my favourite daughter when I’m still alive
“I can see you’re dedicating a good time for Zena, that’s amazing and lovely..” my wife said smiling.
I smile back at her thinking she meant well, I never knew those smiles of hers was a sarcastic one.
Her next sentence was worrisome
“..I also wish you will give this kind of quality time to Marvel too. They’re both your daughters…”
“What do you mean? Zena and Marvel are facing different challenges. Zena needs my immediate attention while marvel is a different case entirely. While are you bringing that up now. I give enough attention to Marvel, I’m always there whenever she needs me..”
“Are you? Well.. it’s alright..” she walked away.
I don’t know what she’s insinuating, maybe she will need to explain herself whenever she’s ready,
I won’t let anything discourage me from helping Zena master this circus game.
Zena is a very smart kid, right from the moment she was born till now I haven’t had any course to fright.
She gives me so much joy as I watch her grow.
I don’t understand why the said game is difficult but I will tackle it with her and make sure she’s good with it.
Her mom complains that I give Zena more attention as if she’s my only child but I’m drawn to Zena and do not want her to fail in any way.
I go out of my way to provide everything she needs and even extra.
I love all my kids, they’re blessings to me and are all special in their own way.
Jonah my son is 11 years, Zena my dearest daughter is 8 years, Marvel my sweet little girl who’s just 6 years is the last baby of the house.
Favouritism maybe playing in the minds of some but the truth remains that I love all my kids
Even my wife that usually complains, makes it very obvious that Marvel is her favourite.
She gives her special attention and comes back early from work most times just to check up on Marvel.
Marvel has a caregiver but my wife still does most of the work.
She’s a nurse and despite how busy she might be, she creates time for Marvel than she does for Zena or Jonah.
We’re one loving family, their happiness is my priority
Zena wining this school game and making her friends and family proud is the only thing occupying my mind.
I don’t want anyone making fun of her.
Monday arrives and Zena left for school
I planned to return from work earlier than usual as I looked forward to whatever news Zena has
I’m hoping it will be positive.
