The stranger emerged from the forest, his breathing steady despite the battle he’d just endured. Moonlight glinted off his cloak as he walked deeper into the woods until a figure stepped out from behind a large oak tree.

“You were right,” the stranger said flatly. “She’s the one.”

The hooded figure gave a low chuckle. “And Kael?”

“He’s getting attached,” the man replied, brushing dirt from his sleeve. “More than he wants to admit.”

“That makes things easier,” the hooded figure said, lowering their hood to reveal sharp, cold eyes. “Love always ruins kings.”

The man frowned. “You think she’ll turn against him?”

“Not yet,” the figure said. “But when the truth settles, when the memories come back fully, she’ll have no choice. The Moon Goddess didn’t bond them for love. She bonded them for judgment.”

The man hesitated. “And if she resists?”

“Then we make her remember what he did,” the figure said simply. “Every scream, every flame.”

The forest went quiet again. The figure stepped closer to him, voice lowering. “Keep watching them. When the bond reaches its peak, we strike.”

The man nodded, his expression grim. “It won’t be long. The power inside her is growing faster than expected.”

“Good,” the figure murmured. “Let the Alpha fall in love. Let the girl trust him completely. When she does…” They smiled faintly. “It’ll be the perfect time to destroy them both.”

Kael stormed back into the castle carrying Lyra in his arms. Her body was limp, her hair tangled and streaked with dirt, but she was still breathing. Two guards tried to approach, but one sharp look from him made them back off.

“Fetch the healer,” Kael ordered. “Now.”

He didn’t wait for a response. He carried her straight through the main hall and up the stairs, his steps heavy and fast. Servants moved aside quickly, whispering among themselves when they saw who he carried.

Queen Althea appeared at the top of the staircase, alarm flashing across her face. “Kael, what happened?”

“She collapsed during training,” Kael lied without stopping. “Her powers… they’re changing.”

Althea frowned. “Her powers? You mean the bond?”

Kael didn’t answer. He walked past her and entered his chambers, laying Lyra gently on his bed. Her skin was pale, her mark glowing faintly at her collarbone.

The healer arrived moments later, bowing quickly before rushing to Lyra’s side. “What happened to her?”

“She shifted under the full moon and lost control,” Kael replied. His voice was tense, his eyes never leaving her face.

The healer placed a glowing stone over her heart, watching it flicker. “Her energy is unstable. Whatever triggered it was powerful.”

Kael crossed his arms. “Fix it.”

“I’ll stabilize her,” the healer said quietly, “but this isn’t ordinary magic. She’s carrying more than the bond mark now.”

Kael’s jaw tightened. “Do what you can.”

The healer worked silently for several minutes until Lyra’s breathing evened out. The glow around her body faded to a faint shimmer.

“She’ll wake soon,” the healer said, packing her tools. “But you need to keep her calm when she does. If her emotions spike again, the power could resurface.”

When the healer left, Kael sat beside the bed, his gaze softening. He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “You always find a way to scare me,” he muttered quietly.

He leaned back in the chair beside her, exhaustion creeping in. He didn’t notice how tightly he was holding her hand.

The morning light filtered through the curtains when Lyra stirred. Her head ached, her body heavy, but the familiar scent around her told her where she was.

Her eyes fluttered open to find Kael sitting in the chair beside her, half asleep, his hand still resting on hers.

She blinked, confused for a moment, then everything from last night came rushing back the stranger, the fight, his words.

His descendants killed your people.

Her chest tightened. She turned her head away, staring at the ceiling.

“Lyra?” Kael’s voice was quiet, rough from fatigue. He sat up quickly when he realized she was awake. “You’re okay.”

She didn’t answer at first. Her throat was dry, her voice barely a whisper. “What happened?”

“You fainted after your shift,” he said. “The healer said your powers are growing faster than expected. You’re safe now.”

She finally looked at him. His eyes were tired but gentle, his expression full of concern. For a moment, she almost forgot everything.

“Why do you care so much?” she asked softly.

Kael froze, caught off guard by the question. “Because I do,” he said simply.

Her eyes searched his face for a lie but found none.

He leaned forward, lowering his voice. “You don’t have to be afraid of me.”

Lyra swallowed hard, torn between the warmth in his voice and the memory of fire and screams echoing in her mind.

“I’m not afraid,” she said finally. “Just… confused.”

Kael nodded slowly. “Then we’ll figure it out together.”

She wanted to believe him, to trust him, but that voice from the night before still lingered in her head.

He killed your family.

Lyra turned away, forcing a small nod. “Thank you… for staying.”

Kael gave a faint smile. “I wasn’t going anywhere.”

He stood up, adjusting his coat. “Rest for now. We’ll talk later.”

When he left the room, Lyra closed her eyes again, her heart heavy.

The moment the door shut, the whisper returned in her mind, sharper than before.

“You’re in love with your enemy, Lyra.”

Her fingers gripped the blanket tightly as the mark on her skin burned faintly again.
