After finishing all my work, I was ready to go home.

Driving back home, all I could think of was Alice. Getting back home to see her beautiful face, her dazzling emerald green eyes, her copper-colored hair, her smile, and the sound of her laughter was all that was on my mind.

I finally arrived home after the long drive. Entering the living room, I saw Alice sitting on the sofa, watching TV and licking ice cream.

Her eyes were fully and completely concentrated on the TV screen, but her focus wasn’t there—she seemed far away with that smile on her face.

“What are you daydreaming about, Minx?” I quizzed, and she looked up, her eyes meeting mine.

Her eyes slowly left my eyes, landing on the bag I was holding. The bag contained the phone I got for her… well, the phone I told my secretary to get for her.

She shrugged her shoulders, muttering audibly, “Nothing.”

“I don’t believe you,” I claimed. “You weren’t on Earth when I came inside.”

She folded her hands, demanding, “Where was I then?”

“Don’t know,” I murmured, stretching the bag to her. Her brows raised up in question. “I got something for you.”

“What is it?”

I felt my heart race; this was my first time giving someone a gift. I was… Nervous? Maybe, I don’t know, but I hoped she liked it. People love phones, right? Especially people who don’t have one.

“Take it and see,” I told her, and she looked at me first before taking it from my hand.

Her green eyes sparkled with gratitude, which I dismissed, though it made her even more attractive. “Thought you would need it.”

“Well, I do. Thank you.”

“Sure. Everything is already set up, and my number is there,” I said. “Let me go freshen up.”

Climbing the stairs, I looked back and saw her make a little jump and squeal.

She likes it.

Stripping out of my clothes as soon as I entered my room, I went into the bathroom to shower.

After long days at work, I would have taken a long shower and started working again, but not this time.

This time, I had someone waiting for me downstairs to tell me all about her day, probably.

Putting on my sweatpants and hoodie, I reached for my phone, which rang. I knew who was calling even without looking at the phone.

I picked up the phone from the nightstand, and my guess was right. It wasn’t really a guess.

“I thought you weren’t going to pick up,” my mom groused. “Have you gotten back from work? I sure hope so.”

“I have, Mom. Why are you worried? I kíll people.”

“Yeah, that’s not something to be proud of, Alexander. You shouldn’t brag about that,” she snapped.

“I was just telling you the truth; it’s undeniable,” I explained.

“Whatever,” she gave up. “So, this Alice girl your Dad won’t stop yelling about, who is she to you?”

“No one, Mum.”

“You expect me to believe that? You smiled today, Alexander,” she argued. “Tell me, who is this girl to you?”

“I already told you, she is no one.”

She sighed disappointedly. “Can you at least describe how she looks to me?”

There was a knock on my door, and before I could say anything, it swung open.

Alice stared at me quizzically. “You are talking to someone?”

“Well, she is extremely beautiful, she has these green eyes, her hair is reddish-brown,” I answered, ignoring Alice, who had a frown on her face. “She is simply put attractive, and…”

“And?” She draws, curiously.

“I will hang up now. Take care of yourself.”

“Bad, Alexander, bad,” she said. “Good night.”

“Night, Mom.”

I put down the phone, staring at her frowning at me. Putting my phone to charge, I sat back down, taking my laptop.

I inquired, “Why the long face?”

“I asked you a question, but you didn’t reply.”

“I was on a call.”

“Yeah, but you could have nodded.”

“Alright. Next time.”

She sat beside me. “Do you have my number?”

“Yes, why?” I asked, tapping the buttons on my laptop.

“What did you save my name as in your phone?”

My fingers froze momentarily as I stared at her inquisitive eyes. Hesitatingly, I went back to my laptop. “None of your business.”

“Alex,” she winced, pouting sadly. “You are mean, very, very mean.”

“I love being mean, Kitten.”

“What did you have for lunch?”

“Nothing.”

“What?! You haven’t eaten since breakfast? That’s outrageous,” she gasped, glaring scoldingly. “I’ll tell the Blair to prepare something. I’ll be right back.”

—

Standing out in the dark, I sipped my wine. It was past midnight, and the night was chilly.

I couldn’t sleep; I knew I couldn’t, not after what happened today.

My father had too much effect on me. He could use his words to cause me more insomnia than I already had.

His words haunted me and replayed over and over again in my head. I couldn’t do anything to block them out.

The wine glass was snatched from me, and I looked at the only person who could try that.

Alice.

She gulped it all in one go, making a sound by kissing her tongue on the top of her mouth.

“This is strong but delicious,” she said, admiring the glass. “What is it?”

“Why are you awake?”

“I can ask you the same thing, Alex,” she replied. “And I will. Why are you awake, and what are you doing outside? Aren’t you cold?”

“I’m not cold,” I said, taking the glass from her and pouring another. “I’m not feeling sleepy either.”

“What’s wrong?” She implored, tilting her head to look at me. “Are you okay? Did something happen at work? You were really quiet throughout dinner. You okay?”

“Yeah. I’m fine,” I lied. “Here is the remaining wine if you want it. Goodnight.”

I walked back into the house without waiting for another word from her.

How did she know that I wasn’t fine? I am fine, but this was different. Is it showing on my face?

I shouldn’t have left her alone in the cold. I turned back, walking back to her, but she was also coming in.

We bumped into each other, and she fell, wincing in pain. I stretched out my hand, and she took it.

“Are you hurt?” I asked her, helping her to get on her feet.

She glared at me before she snapped, “Yes. Of course, I’m hurt. Your hard body fell on me.”

“Is it my fault that you’re petite and weak?”

She opened her mouth in shock, punching my shoulder, which was painless. “You didn’t just call me weak, did you? I’m very strong; you’re just stronger.”

“Can you walk?”

“Yes, I can,” she replied, dusting her back.

“You bumped into me.”

“No, I didn’t,” She argued, walking pass me. “You did. Good night.”

“Horrible night.”

She turns to me, shooting arrows into my head with her piercing glare. “You– you know what? I’ll be the bigger person and let you be.”

I watched her run on the stairs to her room to have a good night when I wouldn’t have any sleep tonight.

More vigil to me, I guess.
