The K1ller’s Knife – Episode 6
” I’m sorry ma’am…but she has lost so much bl00d and that would require a bløød transfusion immediately,…else I’m afraid that we might lose her”
” Ah! Lose my daughter…? Doctor please take my bløød…you can even take my life too..I don’t care but please save my daughter. I don’t want to lose my Erica!” Mother blurted out all at once as she held onto the doctor’s white coat
I heaved as I released the air I never knew I was holding. For a second, I almost stopped breathing.
To be sincere, when I saw the doctor’s sorry face and when I heard his first three lines, I had concluded that we had lost my sister to the cold hands of dëäth.
I thought that Erica was gone and that I will never see her again.
I thought the worst but thank God that it isn’t so. At least she is still alive.
Mother kept wailing and the doctor had to caution her to lower her voice for the sake of the other patients in the Ward.
” Please calm down ma’am. Your daughter is going to be fine. For now, I’ll advise that you follow the nurse to the laboratory to have your bl00d tested for compatibility which can help save your daughter. Lets hope that all goes well!” Doctor Stanley said as he gently released mother’s hands from his coat
” What then happens if our bl00d isn’t compatible..? Does it mean my daughter will d1e…? Is that what you are trying to tell me doctor…?” Mother asked whilst trying to stop herself from crying
” Ma’am if your bløød isn’t compatible then we’ll need your husband to come over to the hospital and make the bløød donation…so we’ll get the transfusion done before it’s too late. By the way, where is he..?” Doctor Stanley asked casually and mother looked at me not knowing what answer to give him
I was tight-lipped and didn’t know what to say either to bail mother out.
Doctor Stanley also noticed the awkward atmosphere and looked interchangeably between mother and I.
I threw my face sideways. The only prayer in my heart is that mother’s blooid should be compatible. I really want Erica to come out of this alive
Knowing father, I’m sure he is in his mistress arms and might not want to come and donate bløød to save Erica.
” Ma’am…? I asked a question but you are yet to give me a reply. You seem absentminded…is everything okay…?” Doctor Stanley asked looking directly at mother after noticing her lost state
” I’m okay doctor. I’m just worried for my daughter. My husband is out of town and will not be back until a week time…” Mother said and I looked at her wondering when father traveled
“…his phone number hasn’t been connecting since yesterday that this incident happened… Doctor as I speak to you…my husband is yet to know of my children’s condition else he would have been here without a second thought!” Mother concluded shaking her head pitifully and Doctor Stanley believed her
I was in awe that mother could tell such a perfect lie in a bid to protect her b£ast of a husband who doesn’t even care about her or her children’s existence.
I stood there until shortly afterwards mother, doctor Stanley, and the nurse moved out of the Ward.
I shook my head at them and channeled my focus to the bed which Erica was laying on. I sighed with a heavy heart.
Tears welled in my eyes as I kept staring at the bed with memories of my time with Erica filling my head.
She might not have been the best sister but I love her regardless.
She looks so peaceful whilst sleeping. Please wake up Erica. I miss you a lot!
I said a little prayer in my heart as I walked closer to Erica’s bedside and gently took her hands into mine.
“Please Erica come back to us. I know I haven’t been a good example of a big brother but I promise that I will protect you from father from today henceforth”
I later sat on the bed and was staring at her face wishing that a miracle could just happen for her to wake up and call out my name like she usually does.
Mother soon came back to the Ward but her face wasn’t looking bright at all.
” Is everything alright mother…? Why is your face looking like this…?”
” My bl00d and that of Erica isn’t compatible. Your father is the only hope to saving Erica right now…but you know how he is. I don’t want your sister to d1e. I want to hear my Erica’s voice again Jacob but I don’t know what to do!” Mother voiced out her worries to me
” There’s no harm in trying mother. Let’s tell him first…he’s our father…surely he will not turn a blind eye and watch his daughter d1e. After all, it is his fault that Erica is laying here on this bed”
” Let’s hope so Jacob. Let’s hope that he’ll comply and donate his bløød to save Erica. I wouldn’t want to lose my child!”
” But mother can’t we just get him arrested for what he did to Erica…? Look at what he did to you too and even me”
” Jacob are you asking me to arrest my husband…your own father…?”
” Mother I feel it’s because you keep allowing father to get away with the way he treats us badly…. that is why he’s getting even worse and never change”
” Shuuu…keep your mouth shulμt Jacob!. What do you know about adult’s matters..? And how many times have I warned you not to interfere with anything regarding your father and I…?”
” But mother he’s hurting us especially you…”
” Shut up Jacob! Don’t let me repeat myself or else…you will surely regret it!”
” Yes mother” I said and my mouth went shut immediately as I didn’t want to incur mother’s wrath.
We stayed with Erica for two more hours before mother and I left the hospital together,
after the doctor confirmed me fit to be discharged.
It was already dusk by the time we were almost close to the house.
Then I remembered that Angie was home alone and I became very worried.
” Mother we left Angie home alone all day. I wonder if she’s doing okay”
” I believe she is in good hands. After your father left home…I had to call Flora to come stay with her so I can attend to both you and Erica at the hospital”
” Mother which Flora is that…?” I asked curiously and mother hissed aloud before answering me
” Jacob what sort of question is this…? Which other Flora do you know aside the one who sings in church…?”
” Mother you mean Flora has been at our house all this while…?” I asked and mother nodded her head totally ignoring me.
I am scared for mother. If only she knows that Flora is a snåke seeking her dismissal, then she won’t be this trusting
Is mother going to be able to deal with the shock if she catches father in a compromising position with Flora…?
We were standing in front of the door by now,
with mother at the front and me standing behind her.
Mother’s right hand was on the door knob and she was about pushing the door open,
when we heard a loud disturbing sound as though a glass cup fell to the floor
Everywhere became so quiet which made mother feel agitated and scared. I wasn’t left out in the feelings either.
My thoughts were running wildly
‘ Flora and Angie are in there so what’s happening inside?’
‘ Is father in there too?’
‘ What about Angie?’
‘ Oh my goodness! I hope there’ll be no more hav0c caused today.’
I held my breath and my heart rate began accelerating fast as my mother opened the door to see what was happening inside.
