The Don’s Forbidden Marriage – Chapter 18

The Hidden Daughter

The photograph fell from Elena’s hand.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The chapel was silent.

Too silent.

Everyone was looking at her.

Waiting.

Her mother looked like she had been carrying this secret for years.

Alessandro looked like he already feared the answer.

And Vittorio looked satisfied.

Elena slowly picked up the photograph again.

A younger version of her mother stood beside another woman.

The woman held a baby.

A baby wrapped in a white blanket.

On the back, written in faded ink:

THE HEIR WAS SWITCHED.

Elena looked at her mother.

“Explain.”

Her mother closed her eyes.

“Elena…”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“Not another secret.”

“I wanted to protect you.”

“Everyone says that.”

The words hurt.

But she continued.

“I spent my entire life being protected from the truth.”

She held up the photograph.

“And now I find out I might not even know who I am.”

Her mother stepped closer.

“Listen to me.”

“I’m listening.”

“The truth is complicated.”

“Then make it simple.”

A long silence followed.

Finally, her mother spoke.

“You were not born in the Moretti house.”

The room froze.

Elena felt like the ground had disappeared beneath her.

“What?”

Alessandro looked at her mother.

“Are you saying she isn’t your daughter?”

“No.”

Her mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“She is my daughter.”

Elena stared at her.

“Then what does that mean?”

Her mother touched the photograph.

“The baby in this picture was you.”

Elena frowned.

“Then why does it say I was switched?”

Her mother looked toward Alessandro’s father.

“Because she was.”

Everyone turned.

Alessandro’s father stepped forward.

“Explain.”

His voice was quiet.

But dangerous.

Her mother swallowed.

“Eight years before the attack, Lucia Romano discovered the council was searching for the heir.”

Elena looked at the black rose symbol.

“Me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the heir had the ability to unite the families.”

Alessandro frowned.

“But Elena was born Moretti.”

His father shook his head.

“No.”

The answer shocked everyone.

“What do you mean?” Elena asked.

Her mother looked at her.

“Your birth was hidden.”

The room became still.

“You were born into the Romano family.”

Alessandro stared.

“No.”

His father’s expression changed.

“Impossible.”

Her mother looked at him.

“Lucia knew.”

“Lucia knew Elena was my family?”

“Yes.”

Elena looked between them.

“My family?”

Her mother nodded.

“You are a Romano by blood.”

The words echoed.

Alessandro looked at her differently.

Not with fear.

With disbelief.

Vittorio smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Elena turned toward him.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you used it.”

“I revealed it.”

“You threatened my family.”

“I gave you the truth.”

“No.”

Her voice became stronger.

“You gave me another weapon.”

Vittorio smiled.

“You’re learning.”

Alessandro stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Vittorio looked amused.

“You still protect her.”

“She doesn’t need your permission to exist.”

“No.”

Vittorio looked at Elena.

“She needs to decide.”

“Decide what?”

“Whether she belongs with the Romano family.”

Elena looked around.

Everyone wanted something from her.

The council wanted an heir.

Vittorio wanted power.

Her family wanted protection.

And Alessandro—

She looked at him.

What did he want?

He noticed her expression.

“Don’t look at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like I’m waiting for something from you.”

“Aren’t you?”

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“You are not a title. You are not an heir. You are not a solution to our problems.”

The room became quiet.

“You’re Elena.”

For the first time that night, she felt like someone saw her.

Not her blood.

Not her name.

Her.

Vittorio’s expression darkened.

“That is exactly why she is dangerous.”

Elena faced him.

“Why?”

“Because you don’t understand power.”

“No.”

She stepped forward.

“I understand it better than you.”

He laughed.

“You think refusing power makes you stronger?”

“No.”

She looked at the council.

“I think choosing what to do with it does.”

The old council leader watched her carefully.

“Then what do you choose?”

Elena looked at the black rose symbol.

Then at Alessandro.

Then at her mother.

“I choose the truth.”

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

“I want every document. Every record. Every secret the council has hidden.”

The council members exchanged looks.

“You demand too much.”

“Maybe.”

She looked at Vittorio.

“But I’ve been given too little my entire life.”

Alessandro’s father stepped forward.

“The records can be opened.”

Everyone turned.

“Father?” Alessandro asked.

He looked at Elena.

“If she is truly the heir, the records belong to her.”

Vittorio’s expression changed.

“You would give her control?”

“No.”

The older man looked at him.

“I would give her a choice.”

A sound came from the back of the chapel.

Everyone turned.

An old woman stood in the doorway.

She wore a dark coat.

Her silver hair fell around her shoulders.

Elena’s breath caught.

She knew those eyes.

She had seen them before.

In old photographs.

“Lucia.”

Alessandro’s father whispered the name.

The woman looked at him.

“Brother.”

The room froze.

Alessandro stepped forward.

“You’re alive.”

Lucia smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you come back?”

“Because I was hiding the most important secret of the family.”

Her eyes moved to Elena.

“I was protecting her.”

Elena stared.

“Me?”

Lucia nodded.

“You were never supposed to inherit an empire.”

“Then what was I supposed to do?”

“Live.”

The answer surprised her.

Lucia walked closer.

“When I discovered what the council wanted, I knew they would turn you into a symbol.”

“A symbol?”

“A person everyone could use.”

Elena looked at the ring.

The contract.

The engagement.

Everything suddenly made sense.

“My whole life was planned.”

“Yes.”

“By who?”

Lucia looked at Vittorio.

“By people who believed they owned destiny.”

Vittorio’s expression became cold.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

Lucia smiled.

“And you should have learned that secrets always return.”

She turned to Elena.

“There is one more thing you need to know.”

Elena already felt exhausted.

“What now?”

Lucia reached into her coat.

She removed a small necklace.

A necklace identical to Elena’s pendant.

Elena stared.

“My mother gave me one.”

“No.”

Lucia shook her head.

“She gave you half.”

She opened the necklace.

Inside was a hidden symbol.

A symbol Elena had never seen.

“What is it?”

Lucia looked at Alessandro.

Then back at Elena.

“It is the mark of the true heir.”

The room became silent.

Elena looked down.

“Then why did everyone believe I was Moretti?”

“Because we needed them to.”

“Who knew?”

Lucia’s expression became serious.

“Only a few people.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

Then answered:

“Your mother.”

Elena looked at her mother.

“And?”

Lucia looked at Alessandro.

“Your father.”

Silence.

Then Elena looked at Alessandro.

“Did you know?”

His face changed.

“No.”

“Did your father know?”

Alessandro looked at him.

The older man did not answer.

Elena’s heart sank.

“Everyone knew except me.”

“No,” Alessandro said.

“I didn’t.”

“But you knew something.”

“Yes.”

“And you hid it.”

He lowered his gaze.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than a lie.

Because it was honest.

Before Elena could respond, every phone in the chapel rang.

One after another.

A message appeared.

From an unknown sender.

Everyone checked their screens.

The same words appeared:

THE HEIR HAS BEEN FOUND.

Then another message followed.

NOW SHE MUST DIE.

The chapel doors slammed shut.

The lights went dark.

And from the shadows came a voice:

“Welcome home, Elena Romano.”

A gunshot echoed.
