THE DON’S FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE

The Don’s Forbidden Marriage – Chapter 9

A Dangerous Promise

For several seconds, no one moved.

The underground room was silent except for the faint sound of water dripping somewhere behind the stone walls.

Elena stared at the man standing at the entrance.

Alessandro’s father.

The man everyone believed had died eight years ago.

The man whose name had been buried beneath secrets, betrayal, and grief.

He looked older than the photographs.

A thin scar crossed his left cheek, and his dark hair was touched with silver. But his eyes were unmistakable.

They were the same eyes Alessandro had.

Cold.

Watchful.

And carrying years of pain.

“Father?” Alessandro repeated.

The man stepped into the room.

“Alessandro.”

The Don’s face hardened.

“You’re dead.”

“I was supposed to be.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

His father lowered his gaze.

“I had no choice.”

Alessandro laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“Everyone says that.”

Elena watched him carefully.

For the first time, Alessandro did not look like the feared Don.

He looked like a son standing before the man he had mourned for years.

“You left me,” Alessandro said.

“I protected you.”

“You disappeared.”

“To keep you alive.”

“You let me take control of the family alone.”

His father remained silent.

Alessandro took a step forward.

“I buried an empty coffin.”

The older man’s expression changed.

“I know.”

“You watched me suffer.”

“I watched you survive.”

The words filled the room.

Alessandro’s hands tightened at his sides.

Then Elena stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Both men turned toward her.

She looked directly at Alessandro’s father.

“Is it true?”

His eyes softened slightly.

“What?”

“You’re my real father?”

The man stared at her.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.”

Elena’s breath caught.

Her mother had loved him.

Her father had hidden the truth.

And Alessandro—

She looked at the Don.

Her half-brother.

The man she had been expected to marry.

The man who had kept secrets from her for years.

“How could you let this happen?” she asked.

Alessandro’s father looked at the marriage contract lying on the table.

“I didn’t.”

“Then who did?”

“Your father.”

Elena frowned.

“My father created the contract?”

“He changed it.”

“Why?”

The older man walked toward the table.

He picked up one of the old documents and placed it in front of her.

“This was the original agreement.”

Elena looked down.

The paper was old and stained around the edges.

At the top were the names of two families:

Romano.

Moretti.

Her eyes moved across the page.

“This isn’t a marriage contract.”

“No,” Alessandro’s father said. “It was a protection agreement.”

Elena looked up.

“What kind of protection?”

“Your mother knew your father was working with dangerous people. She discovered information that could destroy them.”

“What information?”

“She found proof that your father had been secretly helping Vittorio.”

Elena turned toward Vittorio.

He stood near the wall, watching them with a faint smile.

“You worked with my father?”

Vittorio shrugged.

“Your father was useful.”

Alessandro moved toward him.

“Careful.”

Vittorio’s smile disappeared.

Elena looked back at Alessandro’s father.

“Why did my mother need protection?”

“Because once she discovered the truth, your father threatened her.”

“With what?”

“With you.”

Elena’s fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

“My father threatened me?”

“You were a child,” he replied. “Your mother believed that staying with him was the only way to keep you safe.”

Elena shook her head.

“But she disappeared.”

“She escaped.”

“Why didn’t she take me?”

The older man looked away.

The silence was painful.

“Why?” Elena demanded.

“Because your father was watching you.”

Her heart sank.

“He told your mother that if she tried to take you, you would disappear.”

Elena stared at the floor.

Suddenly, the photographs on the wall made sense.

She had been watched.

Followed.

Observed.

Her entire life.

Alessandro stepped closer to her.

“Elena.”

She raised her hand.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

She looked at him.

“Did you know my father was watching me?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since I became Don.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I couldn’t prove it.”

“You could have warned me.”

“And put you in more danger?”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do.”

His voice was firm.

“I watched what happened to everyone who learned too much.”

Elena stared at him.

“And what happened?”

Alessandro’s eyes darkened.

“They disappeared.”

The room became quiet.

Then Elena looked at the original agreement again.

“If this was only about protection, why was I told I had to marry Alessandro?”

Alessandro’s father answered.

“Because your father changed the agreement after he learned I was alive.”

Elena frowned.

“He knew you were alive?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he tell anyone?”

“Because he needed something from me.”

“What?”

“The evidence your mother had hidden.”

Elena looked down at the silver pendant around her neck.

“The evidence is connected to this?”

The older man nodded.

“Your mother gave you that pendant for a reason.”

“I was a child.”

“She believed you would be safer if you didn’t know what it contained.”

Elena opened the pendant again.

The small photograph was still inside.

But now she noticed something else.

A thin piece of paper was hidden beneath it.

She carefully removed it.

There was a symbol drawn on the paper.

A black rose.

And beneath it were three words:

THE CHAPEL BELOW.

Alessandro’s father went still.

“What is it?” Elena asked.

He took the paper.

His face became serious.

“The old chapel.”

“What chapel?”

“The monastery.”

Elena remembered.

The place where her mother had hidden.

The place where Alessandro’s father had supposedly died.

“Is that where my mother is?” she asked.

“No.”

“Then what’s there?”

“The evidence.”

Vittorio suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned toward him.

“You’re too late.”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.

“What did you do?”

Vittorio stepped away from the wall.

“The chapel was opened yesterday.”

Elena’s heart began to race.

“By who?”

Vittorio looked directly at her.

“Your father.”

The room fell silent.

“My father is there?”

“He’s searching for the same thing you are.”

Alessandro moved closer.

“Where is he?”

Vittorio smiled.

“You know where.”

Alessandro’s father looked at Elena.

“We have to leave.”

Elena stared at him.

“You’re taking me to my mother?”

“Yes.”

“And then to the monastery?”

“Yes.”

She looked at Alessandro.

He remained silent.

“You’re coming too,” she said.

His eyes met hers.

“I was already going.”

Elena folded the original agreement and placed it inside the black folder.

“No more secrets.”

Alessandro’s expression tightened.

“You know I can’t promise that.”

“Then don’t ask me to trust you.”

He stepped closer.

“I’m not asking for trust.”

“Then what are you asking for?”

His voice became quieter.

“Stay beside me until this is over.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because whether you accept it or not, you’re my family.”

The words surprised her.

She had spent the last few days fearing him.

Arguing with him.

Questioning him.

And now she knew why he had always watched her so carefully.

Not because she belonged to him.

Not because of the contract.

Because he believed she was his responsibility.

Elena looked away.

“I don’t need you to control me.”

“I know.”

“I will make my own choices.”

“I know.”

“And if I come with you, it will be because I choose to.”

Alessandro nodded.

“Then choose.”

She looked at the dark passage.

Somewhere beyond the underground room was her mother.

Her father.

The monastery.

And the truth that had destroyed both families.

Elena took a deep breath.

“I’m coming.”

Alessandro gave a small nod.

But before anyone could move, a phone rang.

The sound came from Vittorio’s coat.

He looked down.

Then smiled.

“You should answer that.”

Alessandro stepped forward and took the phone.

The screen showed only one word:

UNKNOWN.

He answered.

“Speak.”

For several seconds, he listened.

Then his expression changed.

Elena noticed immediately.

“What happened?”

Alessandro ended the call.

His eyes moved toward his father.

Then to Elena.

“Your mother has been taken.”

Elena’s face went pale.

“By who?”

Alessandro’s voice became cold.

“Your father.”

She stepped toward him.

“Where is he taking her?”

“He didn’t say.”

“Then find him!”

“I will.”

“How?”

Alessandro looked at the note from the pendant.

“The chapel.”

Elena’s heart pounded.

“He wants us to go there.”

“Yes.”

“Then it’s a trap.”

“Yes.”

She stared at him.

“And we’re still going?”

Alessandro reached for his coat.

“We don’t have another choice.”

Elena looked at the others.

Her father had taken her mother.

Vittorio had returned from the dead.

And the truth was hidden beneath an abandoned monastery.

She turned back to Alessandro.

“If we go, I make one promise.”

“What promise?”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“No one decides my future for me again.”

Alessandro held her gaze.

Then he nodded.

“Agreed.”

“And the marriage contract?”

His expression became serious.

“It is over.”

Elena froze.

“You’re ending it?”

“Yes.”

“Just like that?”

“It was never meant to control you.”

He took the contract from the table.

Then tore it in half.

The sound echoed through the underground room.

Elena watched as the pieces fell to the floor.

For the first time, she felt the weight of the contract disappear.

But freedom did not mean safety.

Outside, the darkness was waiting.

And somewhere beneath the old monastery, Elena’s father was preparing for their arrival.

Vittorio smiled.

“You’re walking into exactly what he wants.”

Alessandro turned toward him.

“Then he should be careful what he asks for.”

He held out his hand to Elena.

She looked at it.

Then, by her own choice, she took it.

Not as his bride.

Not because of a contract.

But because the truth was waiting.

And she was ready to face it.
