[Ayana’s House]

Three hours have journeyed through the clock now. It’s been three hours since Ayana sent the three dead souls to Afternoon. Yet, nothing.

The only development was that Arturo and Castle took El Crow’s body away with the hope that when he wakes up, he’d wake up at home.

Now it’s just Satan and Midnight with Skylar and Roselle’s bodies on the tables. Even Ayana already left.

As the fourth hour prepared to strike on the clock, Satan’s impatience grew to her guts, irritating her.

She checked the time on her weird wristwatch and lost every patience.

Her palms grabbed the third table that’s now empty, she flipped the camphor wood away in one swift motion, slamming it against the wall and shattering the form.

“Satan!” Midnight cautioned.

“It’s close to four hours now,” Satan’s tone felt rusty. “Four damn hours, and they’re still not awake?”

“Ayana didn’t give a specific time. She only said they’d wake tonight.” Midnight tried to coax her.

“The night is far from young, Midnight.” Satan retorted.

Then a little groaning sound alerted them from behind.

Their necks turned, eyes settling on Roselle’s table where the sound came from.

Roselle’s eyes opened with a flip.

“Roselle?” Satan moved closer.

Roselle shot up, and the candles surrounding her died out.

Sweat tore out of her pores, wetting her skin in layers.

“Roselle?” Midnight called.

Roselle snapped her eyes around as if trying to get her bearings. She looked dazed, and her palms rounded into fists till her eyes landed on Satan.

“Mother?” She breathed.

“Thought you’d never get back to your senses.” Satan heaved, relief flowing through her blood.

“Midnight?” Roselle breathed harder.

“You’re back,” Midnight said.

Roselle’s eyes settled on Skylar’s table, and merely seeing the insane bitch made her jump down.

But she hadn’t moved when the candles surrounding Skylar’s table died out too. Skylar sat, eyes immensely punishing.

She got down from her table too, her tall figure so imposing.

“You actually woke up, wench.” Roselle’s fists refolded, her body sweat dripping to the floor.

She wanted to instantly attack Skylar, but that’d put her in trouble if her mother found out she was fighting for an Enigma, so she tried hard to keep her cool by biting herself repeatedly on the lip.

Skylar understood her plight, and she gave her the darkest intentional smile which made Roselle wish she could skin her alive.

“What was the tasks you were given?” Satan asked in her usually draining tone, staring at the two.

“We had to choose opponents in the fog and kill them by stabbing their hearts, Mother.” Roselle muttered.

“And your opponents were?” Midnight asked suspiciously.

“Mine was an old man whom I took out too easily.” Roselle swallowed.

“Yours?” Satan faced Skylar.

“It was El Crow.”

Satan and Midnight shifted on their positions. “El Crow?”

“You heard right, Boss.” Skylar responded, frosty.

Satan was with her in another splitting minute.

“You’re telling me you killed El Crow? Arturo’s only son? The strongest Enigma? The stitchmouth?”

Skylar gave the woman a side look. “He was wounded and weak. A wounded soul in Aftermoor meant incurable weakness.”

The place nearly split in half together with the people inside it when Satan laughed out like a creep.

The laughter was low, yet haunting as her voice turned tinier than it already was, echoing throughout.

She was still laughing as she walked out of the place.

“I still don’t believe your lore, Skylar.” Midnight mentioned before following Satan out of the space.

Skylar smirked down. She knew he wouldn’t believe.

Satan might be the cruel Boss of Team Dread, but Midnight as the Underboss liked to overdo.

Midnight was a doubting Thomas who’d never believe shit till he saw it with his malevolent eyes.

Outside, Satan’s laughter stopped. She was waiting by the car with Midnight when the girls emerged.

“Why were you both in the same bus as El Crow?” Satan questioned.

Skylar knew this question would come sooner or later, and she luckily had been preparing for it.

“I went hiking, and i overdid it. I climbed the jagged hills and came down aching all-over. I had to take the bus, and coincidentally, I met Roselle and El Crow in it already.”

Roselle talked next…

“I went to get my hair done,” she fingered her smooth hair. “My car developed a problem, it wouldn’t start. I called Rosita to come pick me, but she refused. I had to take the bus. I already met El Crow inside.”

Now, Midnight wasn’t the only one giving them suspicious looks. Satan herself was also glaring at them as if their stories sounded like lies.

But it didn’t take long before the atmosphere cleared again.

Satan and Midnight hopped into the car, and a taxi came to take Skylar. Skylar jumped into it.

The taxi drove away even before the Mercedes.

Roselle was supposed to get in the Mercedes backseat with Satan, but she refused to get in.

“I still have things to settle in this particular street.”

Satan’s backseat window went down, and her eyes stared out.

“Whatever you have to settle, make it count, daughter. Eyes are on you.”

With that, she wound back up, and Midnight drove away.

Roselle waited for about ten minutes after the car disappeared down the street, then she went back into the house with a pounding heart.

“Who’s here!” She yelled in the dark, tripping and falling.

“F+k! Who’s hereee!!” She yelled louder, getting herself up.

She moved forward in the thawing dark, and she tripped again.

She fell on her face.

“Who the hell is here!!!??”

It felt like the darkness was mocking her because immediately she stood again, she tripped and fell again.

She remained there, deciding to not stand anymore.

“Look, whoever you are… a witch, wizard or a shaman, you were powerful enough to send us to Aftermoor to do tasks and wake up to life. I’m sure you’re also powerful enough to bring El Crow back! I’ll do anything, I mean anything to have his life restored! I beg you!!”

Ayana appeared from the shadows, taking her seat on top of a footstool, palm tight around her fat cane.

Her white eyes beamed. The light didn’t even allow Roselle to look up. She had to keep her head down.

“Begging for the enemy?” Ayana spoke calmly. “Aren’t you one of a kind? Roselle Osborne?”

“El Crow will never be my enemy!” Roselle snapped. “I love him, and he mightn’t know now, but he’ll come to realize it later how much I’m willing to do for him! You want my legs? Eyes? Hearing? Take anything and just bring him back.”

“Do you really think anyone can bend the Afternoon rules except Inferno himself?” Ayana said.

“Wait,” Roselle gasped. “Only Inferno can rewrite the rules? Then how do I meet him? I can die again, and you’ll send me there if that’s it.”

“Don’t be foolish, Roselle.” Ayana’s light vanished, and she vanished too. “El Crow’s soul died in Afternoon? Then forget about ever seeing him again. Inferno never changes his rules.” Her voice echoed in the air.

Roselle was finally able to stand up, panting loudly.

“You fucking foolish fellow!! Ugly thing! No solution? How dare you even say that to my face! How—”

A sudden wind carried her out of the place before she could finish her words, and when she landed, she found herself on the city road when two cars were coming on each sides.

She rolled herself to the traffic light pole, clinging to it.

“The heck?” She asphyxiated. “Such crazy hag!”

—

[A Healing House]

The building smelled like herbs and strong concoctions, and a little like medical disinfectants.

Rooms weren’t much, but they all held healing patients and newly brought ones.

A nurse carried a care tray into one of the rooms, shutting the door tightly after herself.

“No one knew El Crow was here. I kept the user of the drugs secret like you asked me to.” She said.

Arturo and Castle who’re standing inside the ward looked relieved.

But El Crow who’s in bed didn’t change. His face never changes. Always the same rock-hard, deadpanned form like a skull.

He woke up some minutes ago, and he looked fine. Even the bleeding lips bruise and chest stab he got in Aftermoor are now gone.

Seems everything that happens in Aftermoor, stays in Aftermoor.

He got down from the bed and took the pills on the nurse’s care tray. He unwrapped them, and instead of throwing them in his mouth, he dropped them in the cup of water.

“Crow!” Arturo shouted.

“You really think what I want right now is sit here and swallow goddamn drugs? Chew pills like a patient!?” El Crow glowered like an animal.

“Have you ever seen me take drugs or foolish concoctions and herbs?” He continued, enraged. He took the tray from the nurse and threw it out through the open small window.

The nurse shifted back, scared.

El Crow’s eyes remained hooked on Arturo’s.

“What do you want?” Castle asked.

“Nothing!” El Crow snapped. “Just leave me the eff alone!”

The nurse rushed out.

“You were unbearable before, but it seems your journey to Aftermoor worsened your head.” Castle said.

El Crow sat back on the bed edge, ignoring them for a minute.

“No one in the New Orleans must know about my being alive till I appear by myself.”

“Is that it?” Arturo asked.

“Yeah.”

“You think we don’t want that too?” Arturo grinned. “I’d love to see Satan with the thought that you died, then witness her face twist in shock when you reappear like a reaper.”

“You stay here and rest, then reappear whenever you want. We won’t disturb you.” Castle said.

He left the room with Arturo, and as they walked down the short hallway, Arturo let out a sigh.

“I hate his unchanging temper. He’s always fucking angry.”

“He’s your dear son, Boss.” Castle adjusted his glasses. “Don’t act like you don’t cherish him the most in this whole wide world.”

He took an umbrella by the door and unwrapped it, covering their heads as it was still raining hard.

“You know too much, Castle.” Arturo stopped when they got to the car.

Castle smiled dryly. “Now I have to keep this news inside myself. Not telling it to the whole Enigma Team is easy, but not telling it to my guys? Blade and Bishop and the rest?”

“You can do it.” Arturo gave him a shoulder pat. “When Satan sees him alive later, we’ll have our fun. New Orleans is about to burn again.”

“We still don’t know why he was in that bus with the Dread girls though.” Castle wondered.

“We ask that later.” Arturo stated.

“Shall I send his car over to this place for him?” Castle asked.

“Why still asking?” Arturo frowned. “That car is the only thing he never gets mad at. Send his car here.”

“Sure,” Castle opened the car door for Arturo who climbed in.

Castle rolled the car out of the premises.

—

[Dread House]

Skylar’s taxi touched down in front of the building at midnight.

She didn’t have to pay the driver. It’s one of the Team taxis, driven by a guard of the house.

She didn’t shut the door too, and despite the fact that she had no umbrella, she walked slowly into the building, allowing the rain to drench her before she arrived under the cover of the front balcony.

“Skylar?” The first female Dread she met at the balcony echoed.

“The fuck? Skylar?”

“Wasn’t she in coma?”

More Dreads swooned out of the building, both males and females, and in a minute, the balcony became so full they had to push each other to make way for Skylar’s legs.

The disappointed looks of those planning to take her place was so obvious, especially Roy.

He stood in the middle of the crowd, right hand holding a lighter shaped like a gun which he kept turning on and off as his eyes bored into Skylar.

“Was she even originally in coma?”

“How’s she awake?”

Quincy and Renee broke into the crowd suddenly.

“Roselle is awake too according to the information we got from Boss Satan!” Renee announced.

“What!?”

“Now tonight is about to get shitty.”

“The two enemies are awake?”

That news made Roy stop pressing his lighter off and on.

“Roselle is awake?” He muttered.

“How does it feel to know no one wants you here despite being the strongest fighter here, Skylar?” Renee chirped hatefully.

Quincy pulled her back and stepped to the front instead.

“Welcome back, Long Legs.” He smiled.

In a whim, Skylar sent a strong punch to his face, and the crows shrieked as Quincy staggered back, bleeding.

“Insane whore!!” Renee screamed, attempting to attack Skylar, but Quincy quickly pulled her back.

With her cutting glare still intact, Skylar entered the building.

Roy entered too.

While the other Dreads laughed at Quincy, Renee hissed. “Told you! She’s not worth being kind to!”

Quincy got up, wiping blood from his nose with a sniffle.

“She wouldn’t have punched me if I hadn’t called her Long Legs that she hates.” He grinned.

“But her legs are long!” Renee hissed again. “That hypocrite!”

A Dread ran into the busy balcony, knocking a few people out of his way till he got to the middle.

“El Crow is dead! News from the streets! Even Boss Satan confirmed it, and Enigmas are currently grieving. El Crow is dead!” He shouted.

“Yes!!” Renee shouted, jumping as the other Dreads began celebrating too.

—

Skylar’s hands stayed in the front pockets of her joggers as she climbed the flight of stairs that led to her personal Suite.

Yeah, Suite.

Top Tier Dreads like her and Roy and the twins…they live in their personal Suites inside this huge building.

Middle Tier like Quincy and Renee live in one rooms.

Low Tier Dreads live in the storerooms where they battle with insects and mosquitoes all night.

Tiers work best in this place.

Skylar’s Suite is located on the second staircase, and she was already getting her phone out of her pocket as she finished climbing the stairs.

She opened the lock app on her phone and clicked UNLOCK.

Her suite door clicked open.

She stepped into her own world which smells like herself.

Her own presence wrapped around her slowly, peeling off the odd stench of Ayana’s house and the foreign aftertaste of Aftermoor.

She stopped in her living room, dropping her arms by her sides as she thought of how she drove the knife into El Crow’s heart.

She’d do anything to experience that feeling again. She let a smug smirk round her lips as she walked towards her ice freezer to take a iced wine.

Immediately she opened the freezer, she received a visitor.

Rosita.

With her arms crossed, she backed the wall, one leg up.

“To what do I owe this unpleasant visit?” Skylar said without even looking up as she opened the wine.

“Always lock your door. Who knows when a stray cat might sneak in.” Rosita mused mysteriously.

“That’s too bad,” Skylar looked up with only an eye. “I love leaving my door open so stray cats like you can enter and get wounded….or die.”

She threw the wine bottle at Rosita with a otherworldly precision, but Rosita only went down a bit.

The bottle met the wall, shattering to pieces and spilling wine and ice all-over the brown walls and rug.

“Not every stray cat is spineless, Skylar.” Rosita lifted her brows.

And that instant, Roselle rushed inside in her usual impatient manner. She stepped over pieces of bottle on the floor and ran to Skylar.

Her weight knocked Skylar heavily to the back, and Skylar’s body crashed to the wall behind.

“Slut!!!!!!” Roselle roared, redness dominating her face.

Not the eyes. The face.

She looked peppered.

Behind them, Rosita still stood close to the wall, watching them with full attention. She’s enjoying this.

“It’s interesting to watch you crash out because of El Crow,” Skylar’s smirk deepened. “What do you think Boss Satan would say when she learns that her daughter is head over heels in love with an Enigma?”

Roselle’s jaw clicked, and Skylar leaned in closer, whispering…

“I bet you’ve been dreaming of being one of the sluts he f+ks by his window daily. I bet your pussy becomes a lake only by hearing his voice, but too bad, Roselle. I killed your p+sy wetness. He’s gone.”

Roselle let go of her, lifting her hand and uncurling her palm, but before the slap could get to Skylar, Skylar caught Roselle’s wrist.

“You might be the daughter of my Boss, but I earned my Top Tier position, and nothing gives you the right to lay hands on me when you know you can’t survive without me! Touch me, and I’ll drain your blood!” She snapped, pushing Roselle.

Roselle dangled away, but she tried to come back for Skylar, and that was when Rosita stepped in.

She pushed Roselle by the shoulder, and Roselle’s jaws clicked again.

“You’re my sister, why the f+k are you never on my side!”

“Why would I be on your side only because we’re sisters?” Rosita blinked slowly, innocently. “Skylar is a better bitch than you are, for life.”

“I hate you!!!!” Roselle screamed at Rosita’s face, then she faced Skylar.

“I hate you more!!!!!” She yelled at Skylar’s face too. “This is only the beginning of this war.”

Roy came in, blank.

“Roselle, Boss Satan orders for your presence in her office.” He reported.

Roselle stormed out of the Suite, and Roy gave Skylar a torrid stare before leaving the Suite too.

Skylar grabbed Rosita by the front of her shirt, slamming her to the door.

“Wretch! Don’t think I don’t know what you’re trying to do!”

“I know you know what I’m trying to do, and that’s exactly why I’m doing it.” Rosita blinked innocently again.

“Roselle hates whoever I support, so the more I pretend to support you, the more her hatred for you increases, and the more her hatred for you increases, the more you both will clash and give me entertainment, I’ll be less bored.” She whispered.

Skylar let her go, and a depraved smile formed on her lips, slowly.

“You think you’re smart, Rosita, but never forget, I’m the top fighter here for a reason.” She whispered, taking two steps away before turning around to face Rosita again.

“Roselle was right. The war is only just beginning in this Team.”

—

[Enigma House]

Grief ate deep into the house like termites on a anthill. Immediately the news of El Crow’s death landed an hour ago, it has been darker here.

At 1 AM, no one dared to sleep as if they’re scared his spirit would haunt their sleeps.

The balcony is full, hallways are full, even the rooftop.

No one’s drinking or playing loud jazz music or fucking pussies.

Everyone’s in mourning mood like they just lost the most important member of their Team.

“Just like that?”

“Didn’t they say he was in coma?”

“That bi+ch Skylar survived it. The second bitch Roselle also survived it according to news from Dread House, so why the hell did El Crow die?”

“Our lunatic can’t be dead.”

“I refuse to believe this makes sense.”

Words floated around intermittently, and grief was slowly becoming sorrow for everyone.

Bishop is in Blade’s suite, both trying hard to not shed tears as the news of El death crushed them continuously.

Castle came in, composed, but when he saw them grieving, he sniffled.

“I was with Boss Arturo when the news came like bullet, and I still can’t believe it.” He shook his head.

“Senior Castle, can you please not cry?” Bishop looked up.

“We’re trying not to cry here.”

Castle nodded, sitting. He’s the oldest Enigma who’s like Arturo’s Underboss, so they attach senior to his name most times.

“Why was El Crow even in the bus?” Blade stood, lamenting.

Two other people ran inside the Suite, both already crying.

“Kent? Lovato?” Where the hell have you both been?!” Bishop stood. “You both wouldn’t even pick your phone!”

“We were at warmups when we slept off on the soft sofa, only to wake and hear the news of Crow’s death! Please tell me it’s untrue!” Lovato shouted.

She’s the youngest and strongest female Enigma.

They treat her like their kid sister.

“Something has to be done,” Kent sniffled. “I mean… we’re in New Orleans, French Quarters, there should be witches who can wake him! El Crow can’t just die!”

“He’s really dead?” Lovato dropped on the chair, devastated.

She began crying so hard she choked on her tears. She coughed out.

“Calm down!” Blade rubbed her back.

Bishop and Castle went to the dinning and returned with cups of water.

“Thank you, Senior Castle.” Lovato took Castle’s cup, drinking from it.

Bishop lowered his hand.

— — — —

[Daybreak]

Morning didn’t feel like the other mornings in this city. The news of El Crow’s death shook everywhere.

Who wouldn’t know him? Not knowing him means you live under some massive rock.

He’s most popular among his Teammates and rival team in fighting rings across New Orleans. He’s more popular in the business world as Arturo’s son, and most popular among ladies for his stamina.

Once, he broke a lady’s hips while doing it. Once, his length tore a lady’s cunt and it had to be stitched back.

His death was a shockwave that’d never leave the city sane, but in the midst of the sorrow, Team Dread were rejoicing so hard.

They were so petty about it that they hung a LED banner sign on top of their building that read…

THE STITCHMOUTH IS GONE TOO SOON, BUT HE’S DOING THE WORLD A FAVOR WITH HIS ABSENCE.

The banner kept rolling and rolling, never stopping. Dreads climbed the rooftop of their building, drinking with joy. They filled their front balcony, blasting music too, disturbing the peace of the street.

From the Enigma House, Arturo emerged in his black suit and grieving face of a man mourning his only son. Castle is behind him, sporting black shirt and pants.

As they approached the car, Satan and Midnight emerged from Dread House too. Their paths nearly crossed, but the boundary between the two houses kept them apart.

They faced each other at each side of the red boundary line.

“You look good in the black suit without your name on your shoulder, Arturo.” Satan said, mockery obvious.

“I’d love to invite you to my son’s funeral, but as you know, he has always hated the smell of older women close to their graves.” Arturo muttered, tone clipped.

“Close to the grave?” Satan’s eyes remained devilishly calm. “Look who’s close to the grave now, Arturo. Obviously your only son. Let’s see who you’re bringing to the ring in the next fight. I’m looking forward.”

And that statement was followed by the mad zooming in of a familiar car.

The ground was still wet from yesterday’s rain, so the car tires left deep prints as it drove past the rough driveway like a boundless tool.

A huge black Brabus G700.

EL CROW was written boldly on the number plate of the car with glittering silver shines.

Only one person drove that car in this city, and he’s dead.

Impossible.

Unless it’s his ghost driving.

Enigmas rushed out of Enigma House to witness what was happening, and when Lovato saw the car, she gasped.

“Wait…. El Crow’s treasured car?”

“How’s that car here?” Bishop frowned slightly.

“Who’s driving it?” Kent said.

“I’m confused,” Blade added.

The other Enigmas murmured too, saying different confusing sentences as the car drove round and round on a spot in front of the building.

At Dread House, Dreads were watching surprisingly too. Their jubilation has been paused. Even those at the rooftop came to the edge to see what would occur.

Skylar forced her way into the crowd of Dreads so she’s in the front.

Quincy and Renee stood behind her, then the twins and Roy.

Skylar’s brain ticked as she watched the car that’s currently stopping.

The headlights went off, and the engines died, then the door opened with a very rough flip.

He stepped out to everyone’s face like a representative of karma.

As usual, his single unlit matchstick sat between his lips. He’s completely shirtless, covered only by his loose jean which hung low on his waist, carving out the tempting V-line.

He rested on his car, sticking out his whole long tongue at Satan, and his two middle fingers at Skylar.

Team Enigma went crazy with deadly screams, and the morning twisted as chaos broke in New Orleans.

TBC.
