Lyra didn’t know when she fell asleep, only that pain followed her into her dreams. Every time she breathed, her ribs ached. Every time she moved, her back stung. Her body felt heavy.

Her door creaked open.

Lyra tensed, expecting Mira… or worse, Serena.

Instead, a low voice said, “It’s only me.”

Ronan stepped inside, closing the door softly behind him. He carried a cloth, a small jar of ointment, and a bowl of warm water.

Lyra blinked in confusion. “Why… are you here?”

Ronan crouched beside her bed. His voice was calm. “You were punished for something you did not choose. That sits wrong with me.”

Lyra lowered her gaze. “I didn’t mean to go there. I wasn’t awake. I don’t know why…”

“I know,” Ronan said. “I saw your eyes. That wasn’t a girl trying to sneak into a room. It was someone being pulled.”

Lyra’s chest squeezed. “I don’t want this bond. I don’t want him.”

“I believe you.”

He spoke the words without doubt.

Lyra did not realize how badly she needed someone to believe her until she heard it. Her throat tightened.

Ronan dipped the cloth into the warm water. “May I?”

She hesitated, then nodded slowly. He gently lifted the fabric of her dress enough to see the bruises on her back. His jaw hardened anger hardening his face.

“This is wrong,” he murmured. “He is blinded by fear.”

Lyra flinched when the cloth touched her skin, but she didn’t pull away.

“Why does he hate me?” she whispered.

“He hates what he fears,” Ronan replied. “Kael has always believed strength means control. The bond threatens that control.”

Lyra bit down on her lip. “But I haven’t done anything.”

Ronan dabbed carefully. “Sometimes fate is enough to be hated here.”

Lyra stared at the wall. “Will he punish me again?”

Ronan’s hand paused. “I will try to prevent it. But Kael listens to no one when he feels threatened.”

Lyra swallowed hard. “I don’t want to be his enemy.”

“Then don’t be,” Ronan said quietly. “But don’t kneel forever either.”

“I didn’t kneel because I chose to,” Lyra said softly. “I just couldn’t stand.”

Ronan nodded. “There’s a difference. I saw it.”

When he finished tending her back, he set the bowl aside and stood. For a moment, he hesitated, then reached out and gently placed a folded cloth on her pillow.

“For the swelling,” he said.

Lyra looked up at him, eyes glassy with exhaustion. “Thank you.”

His voice dropped low. “Not all wolves in this castle want to see you fall. Remember that.”

He turned to leave.

Lyra’s voice trembled behind him. “ Beta Ronan?”

He paused in the doorway.

She looked small,

“Do you think the bond will ruin me?” she asked.

Ronan’s expression softened in a way she hadn’t seen before, not pity, but genuine concern. “No,” he said. “I think it might ruin him first.”

He left quietly, closing the door behind him.

Lyra lay there, staring at the dark ceiling. Pain lingered, but so did Ronan’s words.

Not all wolves want to see you fall.

For the first time since she came here, she didn’t feel completely alone.

The castle fell silent again.

Once Ronan left, warmth faded from the room. Lyra lay still, staring at the shadows on the ceiling until her eyes grew heavy.

Slowly, she drifted into sleep.

A Dream

Moonlight poured across endless fields, soft silver grass waving in a quiet night breeze. Everything felt calm here. Safe. Like the world wasn’t watching or punishing or tearing her apart.

Lyra stood barefoot, wearing a simple white dress. No bruises. No weight on her shoulders.

She breathed without hurting.

“Where am I?” she whispered.

A soft glow shimmered ahead, bright as a star but gentle. It moved.

Then she heard it.

A voice. Warm but hers.

“Lyra…”

Lyra gasped and turned.

No person stood there.

Only moonlight.

Only stillness.

Only that voice again, soft and shaky.

“I am here.”

Her heart pounded. “My wolf?”

The glow flickered, like it nodded.

Lyra stepped forward. “Why are you so quiet in the real world?”

The voice trembled, like a frightened girl hiding behind her own hands.

“We are weak now.”

Lyra swallowed.

We.

Not you

“Will we get stronger?” Lyra asked softly.

A pause.

Then… a tiny spark in the light.

Brighter.

“When we stop kneeling for pain that does not belong to us.”

Lyra’s breath caught.

She remembered everything that had happened to her

And she remembered how she had bowed because she couldn’t stand, not because she agreed she was nothing.

Lyra’s fingers curled gently at her sides.

“I didn’t choose this bond,” she whispered.

The voice answered,

“But you will choose what you become through it.”

Lyra felt her throat tighten. “I’m scared.”

“So am I,” her wolf whispered. “But we survive. That is who we are.”

The glow began to fade, slow like morning leaving a dream.

“Wait,” Lyra murmured. “Don’t go yet.”

“Rest,” her wolf said. “Strength comes after.”

The field faded.

The moon dimmed.

Lyra fell deeper into sleep.

Back in the real world

Dawn crept through the tiny window. Soft light brushed her face.

Lyra opened her eyes.

Her body still hurt.

Bruises still throbbed.

But one thing had changed.

She didn’t feel alone inside herself anymore.

She and her wolf would endure everything together.

We survive.

Lyra slowly sat up. It hurt, but she didn’t wince. She placed her hand over her chest, feeling her heartbeat.

“We will,” she whispered back.
