โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…

~ Genevieve ~

A jolt shot down my spine as the door slammed shut behind Roryโ€”fury radiating off her like a heatwave. I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever seen her that angry.

And honestly? Iโ€™m with her on this.

โ€œAre you going to walk out on me as well?โ€ I turned back to Dominic, who looked utterly dishevelledโ€”so far removed from his usual collected self it was almost jarring. โ€œCould youโ€ฆโ€ he exhaled, the weight of the day clinging to his words, โ€œplease not slam the door on your way out? My headโ€™s splitting andโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going anywhere,โ€ I cut in, then hesitated before adding, โ€œWell, not yet anyway.โ€

I took a step closer, closing the distance between us. My fingers found his, and I laced them together, surprised by how much I liked the feeling of his skin against mine.

โ€œSheโ€™s right, you knowโ€”about Blade. About the fact that he wouldnโ€™t betray you. Or the Brร tva.โ€

โ€œButโ€”โ€

I squeezed his handโ€”hard enough that he wincedโ€”and gave him a look that stopped his argument mid-air. His gaze met mine, almost amused, but I didnโ€™t let my expression falter. โ€œWill you just let me finish?โ€

He fell silent, and I took that as permission. Swallowing, I mentally rearranged the words in my head before speaking, wanting them to actually land.

โ€œDominic, itโ€™s Blade. He justโ€ฆ he canโ€™t be the one. Heโ€™s loyalโ€”to you, to theโ€”whatโ€™s the word?โ€ I tilted my head, searching for the right phrasing as his other hand settled on my hip, pulling me in gently. โ€œOrganisation?โ€ I echoed, earning the softest chuckle from him. I smiled faintly before continuing, โ€œWhat Iโ€™m trying to say is, he wouldnโ€™t risk it. Not you. Not the Brร tva.โ€

โ€œAnd why do you trust him so much?โ€

โ€œThe same reason you made him head of security for your sister.โ€

โ€œTrust can be betrayed.โ€

The words left my mouth before I could stop them. โ€œYouโ€™d know that firsthand, wouldnโ€™t you?โ€

I regretted it the second it slipped outโ€”and the look that twisted his face only deepened that regret.

Dominic scoffed. โ€œYes.โ€ He pulled his hand away and dragged his fingers through the fringe falling over his eyes. โ€œThe person I trusted with my lifeโ€”my sisterโ€™s lifeโ€”turned out to be the one who took my parents from me. So, yes, I know what betrayal feels like. Intimately.โ€ His voice was like steel wrapped in exhaustion. โ€œAnd forgive me if Iโ€™m not keen on feeling it again.โ€

โ€œIt was aโ€”โ€

โ€œA slip of the tongue? A mistake?โ€ His voice cut through mine, sharp and clipped.

He wasnโ€™t shouting, but it blรณody felt like he was.

โ€œDonโ€™t take that tone with me.โ€

I loร the being spoken to like that.

โ€œWhat tone?โ€

โ€œThat tone,โ€ I snapped, louder now, anger finally bubbling to the surface. I stepped back, the space between us suddenly necessaryโ€”like oxygen. โ€œYou know what? I canโ€™t do this. Iโ€™m going home.โ€

โ€œWait.โ€

His voice was softer now, lower. But I wasnโ€™t listening. I busied myself with my handbag, gathering my things as fast as my trembling hands would allow, and made for the door.

โ€œWait.โ€

He said it again, firmer this time, as I reached the front door. I ignored him still.

โ€œPlease.โ€

The word stopped me coldโ€”not just the sound of it, but the thud of his palm slapping the door shut just as I reached for the handle. He was behind me now, and I could feel the heat of his body, the tension in the air.

โ€œBaby?โ€ His voice was gravelled, cracking under something heavy. That single word slithered under my skin. โ€œBaby, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

I didnโ€™t move. My hand still gripped the doorknob, knuckles white with restraint.

โ€œReally. I am.โ€ His breath ghosted over my neck, his voice so close it sent a shiver skating down my spine. โ€œI didnโ€™t mean to upset you. Itโ€™s not your fault Iโ€™m in this foul mood. Youโ€™re not Bladeโ€”โ€

That did it.

I spun around so fast it startled him, my glare sharp enough to cut glass. โ€œFor the millionth time, itโ€™s not Blade,โ€ I snapped, fire lacing every word. โ€œBlame him again, and I swear Iโ€™ll leave.โ€

Dominic flinched like Iโ€™d struck him, his mouth parting around a sharp breath. โ€œYouโ€™re still defending him.โ€

โ€œBecause heโ€™s done nothing wrong,โ€ I bit back. โ€œYouโ€™re accusing someone whoโ€™s been nothing but loyalโ€”โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know that.โ€

โ€œAnd you do?โ€ I demanded, stepping closer, heat rising to my cheeks. โ€œDominic, listen to yourself. Youโ€™re letting your past bleed into everything. Not everyone is out to betray you.โ€

His laugh was hollow, bitter. โ€œYouโ€™re naรฏve if you think loyalty means safety.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not naรฏve,โ€ I snapped. โ€œI just havenโ€™t let paranoia rot me from the inside out.โ€

That hit something. His gaze hardened, but I didnโ€™t back down. Not this time.

โ€œBlade has stood by your side longer than most of the people you do trust,โ€ I said, my voice trembling with something more than angerโ€”something desperate. โ€œHeโ€™s been there for your sister. For you. And youโ€™re ready to throw that away because whatโ€”some rumour? Some whisper in the dark that fits a convenient narrative?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t understand whatโ€™s at stakeโ€”โ€

โ€œThen f+cking enlighten me!โ€ I shouted. โ€œInstead of pushing everyone away the second they challenge you.โ€

A beat passed. His throat bobbed with a swallow, and for a second, he looked genuinely lost.

โ€œI canโ€™t afford to be wrong,โ€ he said finally, voice strained. โ€œIf Iโ€™m wrong about Blade, and he is the leakโ€”then everything Iโ€™ve built, everyone Iโ€™m protectingโ€”โ€ he paused, eyes flicking to mineโ€” โ€œyouโ€”and Roryโ€”it all falls apart.โ€

โ€œAnd if youโ€™re wrong about him being guilty?โ€ I whispered. โ€œWhat then? You lose someone who wouldโ€™ve taken a bรบllet for you. You push away people who actually care.โ€

Silence pulsed between us.

Then his voice cracked. โ€œI donโ€™t know who to trust anymore.โ€

โ€œStart with me,โ€ I said gently, stepping into his space again. โ€œLet me help you find the truth instead of burning every bridge on your way to it.โ€

Dominic didnโ€™t say anything straight away.

He just stared at me.

As though trying to see beneath the skin, beneath the rage and words and defianceโ€”to the part of me that refused to give up on him.

And then, very softly, he nodded. Not much. Just enough.

โ€œYou want to help me find the truth?โ€ he asked, voice rough. โ€œFine. But if it is himโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s not.โ€

โ€œIf, Genevieveโ€”โ€

I held his gaze. โ€œThen we deal with it. But we donโ€™t tear him down based on fear.โ€

He exhaled slowly, dragging a hand through his already-ruined hair. โ€œGod, my head is killing me.โ€

โ€œBecause youโ€™re exhausting yourself fighting the wrong battles,โ€ I muttered, but not unkindly.

That actually made him huff a laughโ€”barely, but it was there. I took it as a win.

I turned away to grab my phone, heart still thudding. โ€œDo you have any proof? Anything specific that made you think Blade might be the leak?โ€

โ€œNot proof. Justโ€ฆ gaps.  And heโ€™s been off latelyโ€”agitated, distracted.โ€

โ€œWhich youโ€™ve apparently decided equals treason.โ€ I shot him a look over my shoulder. โ€œPeople are allowed to have bad weeks.โ€

โ€œNot in this world,โ€ he said darkly.

I didnโ€™t answer that. I couldnโ€™t.

โ€œWait,โ€ I said, breaking the heavy silence. โ€œYou havenโ€™t done anything to him, have you?โ€

โ€œWell, not yet,โ€ Dominic replied with a casual shrug.

โ€œAnd where is he now?โ€

โ€œAt the Base.โ€ Whatever look passed across my face mustโ€™ve betrayed my doubt, because he added, โ€œIโ€™m serious. Theyโ€™re keeping an eye on him.โ€

โ€œAnd this Mikeโ€”do you have eyes on him too?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s locked up.โ€

โ€œHm.โ€

Who wouldโ€™ve thought Iโ€™d ever reach a point in life where conversations like this felt no different to talking about the weather? Definitely not me.

โ€œBesides the people at the Base,โ€ I said, voice steadying. โ€œWho else is on your list of suspects?โ€

โ€œI wish I knew. Everythingโ€™s been going fineโ€”I was daft enough to think my enemies had given up.โ€ He let out a frustrated hiss and ran a hand through his hair. โ€œTurns out, they were just waiting. Waiting for the perfect bloody moment to strike.โ€

I didnโ€™t know what to say to that. My thoughts scrambled for anything remotely comforting, but nothing came. So I simply sighed, hopeless and hollow. I felt useless, like I was drowning in a sea I had no way of crossingโ€”utterly incapable of helping the one person who meant the world to me.

One moment I was revelling in the fact that Dominic was mine again, and the next, we were knee-deep in chร os. And though it made no sense, some irrational part of me blamed myself.

โ€œHave you eaten?โ€ I asked softly. It was a pathetic attempt to break the tension, but somehow it worked. He shook his head.

โ€œYou should eat something,โ€ I pressed, reaching for some semblance of normality. โ€œIโ€™m sure Echo will find something soon.โ€

God, I hope Iโ€™m right.

Dominic didnโ€™t look remotely interested in food, but he was far too exhausted to argue. So, he gave a tired nod of agreement.

โ€ขโ€ข

I didnโ€™t go home tonight. Couldnโ€™t.

He needed me here. He wouldnโ€™t say itโ€”he never doesโ€”but it clung to his silence like static. So I stayed. For him. While we waited for Echo to return with answers we both desperately needed.

It was somewhere around half one in the morning when the shrill ring of Dominicโ€™s phone tore through the quiet, jerking me from my half-sleep.

I didnโ€™t need divine intervention to know who it was.

Dominic reached for the phoneโ€”he was closer, and far more desperate for answers. His movements were sharp despite the exhaustion etched into every line of his body. He answered without hesitation, voice low and hard-edged.

ยซะงั‚ะพ ั‚ั‹ ัƒะทะฝะฐะปะฐ?ยป What did you find out?

I sat up slowly, blanket slipping from my shoulders as the chill in the room found me. My gaze stayed fixed on him. I couldnโ€™t hear Echoโ€™s responseโ€”he hadnโ€™t put her on speakerโ€”but something in the way his body stilled, in the subtle tic of his jaw, told me it wasnโ€™t what he wanted to hear.

ยซะ ะ‘ะปัะนะด?ยป And Blade? he asked, sharper this time.

There was a pause. I could see itโ€”whatever she said next didnโ€™t sit well.

His voice dropped an octave, quieter but far more dangerous. ยซะงั‚ะพ ัั‚ะพ?ยป What is it?

The silence between her answer and his reaction was the longest three seconds of my life. His expression darkened like thunderclouds rolling in over still water. The grip he had on the phone tightened, knuckles whitening.

Iโ€™d never seen him look like this beforeโ€”utterly lethal, like the Dominic that existed in whispered thrรฉats and underground power plays.

The call ended with a curt swipe of his thumb. He turned slowly, the weight of the news still clinging to him like smoke.

โ€œBlade knows something,โ€ he said, low and bitter. โ€œAnd he wonโ€™t say a word.โ€
