{A YEAR LATER~LUNATEX CORP~9AM}

Caden walked into the newly furnished building with a null expression, he made his way to his private elevator reserved only for the president.

His new assistant, Karl walked behind him hurriedly as he tried to keep up with his pace.

The elevator fell close immediately they entered, Karl scrambled through the files in his hand as he cleared his throat and arranged his glasses properly on his face.

“You have a meeting with the board members right now, they are already waiting” Karl informed. “The manager of lunatex hotel also requests a meeting, it’s by 2PM” he added his voice shaking a little.

The aura rolling off Caden was suffocating and the elevator space wasn’t big enough for Karl to breathe properly.

If not because the pay is good, he certainly won’t be here right now.

Caden barely answered him, the elevator door opened and Caden walked out while Karl followed.

He went into the conference room and sat down on the chair at the far end of the room.

Beatrice was already seated at the right side of the table, close to Caden, she didn’t like Caden being viewed as the president of lunatex in front of everyone but that’s for the best.

After all she controls him, he is the face but she is the real president and besides without him, the company would have fallen a year ago leaving nothing for her to take charge off.

A year ago, the stocks fell, investors pulled out, the company was on the brink of total downfall but Caden didn’t let that happen.

He had investors, Nathan and George were willing to help, Caden had his own money in which he used to revive the company

Since the Kingston enterprises rose from the ground, the name was changed too.

Beatrice liked the idea, she needed Caden whether she liked it or not and now the company is doing better than before.

Old people were cleared out and new fresh minds were brought in, all done by Caden.

Beatrice still had control over Caden….. So he lets her think.

“Proceed,” Caden ordered calmly, his voice cutting through the air.

The managing director stood up with unsteady breaths, beads of sweats were visible on his forehead as he arranged the papers in front of him.

A little mistake from him could cost him his job, not only the Kingston enterprises had changed, the president too.

And he is fuçking ruthless.

_

Caden walked back into his office after the boring meeting and he met Lia sitting on his chair.

“I have been waiting for you!” Lia exclaimed as she stood up and walked towards him.

She leaned over to kiss him but he turned his head and shoved her aside. “Why are you here?” He asked instead as he walked towards his chair.

Lia’s face showed extreme anger as she bit her lips.

“Our wedding, I have been preparing and you haven’t made any inputs yet” Lia complained.

“I’m too busy for that” Caden replied, not even sparing her a glance.

“You have been saying that for the past year, you kept talking about how you’re too busy reviving the company to get married, now the company is at its peak, it’s the perfect time for us to get married and I am already making preparations, I want you to help!” Lia rambled.

“Running a company needs focus and I have a meeting to get to, I don’t have time for wedding preparations” Caden replied.

“I would tell mom you don’t want to get married to me, let’s see how she reacts to that” Lia threatened and when she saw Caden didn’t even react to her threats she huffed and walked out of the office.

She went to her mother’s office.

Of course Beatrice Kingston had her own office in the company as the vice president.

Everyone knew the hard work to revive the company was done by Caden, if she stood as the president it would raise problems but on paper she is the president just not to the world.

“Mom!” Lia yelled immediately as she entered her mother’s office.

“What is it sweetheart?” Beatrice asked when she saw her daughter’s sad expression.

“Caden doesn’t want to marry me, he kept postponing it even though we’ve been engaged for a year and now he has completely refused to participate in the wedding preparations, do something about it!” Lia demanded.

“He is the president, he isn’t free to help you with wedding preparation but I would talk to him” Beatrice replied.

“I want you to order him to do it! You have the power to do that don’t you?” Lia said.

“I would, you don’t have to worry” Beatrice touched her daughter’s head and Lia smiled.

“I knew I could trust you” Lia replied and walked out of the office.

Beatrice’s phone rang and she walked towards it.

it was on her desk.

When she saw the caller ID she frowned.

{GEORGE’S OFFICE~4PM}

“Just remove the old lady from her position so she would stop bossing you around” George advised.

He was sitting on his desk while Caden sat on the sofa in the large office.

“If I do that I won’t find out what I need to know, I need her to keep thinking I am under her control” Caden replied.

“She’s way stupid than I thought, she wanted to make a master plan but she didn’t plan her villain arc properly” George mocked.

“I believe there’s something pulling string behind her, Beatrice wouldn’t have been able to pull all that off by herself” Caden replied. “Someone is using her, someone too cautious to step up,” Caden added.

“Then that person is equally stupid” George rolled his eyes.

“I don’t think so. Think about it, how did she have enough money to take such good care of Lia? If she was that rich, why did she marry my father?” Caden said. “Someone has been helping her but now she doesn’t listen to that person anymore because she thinks she has control over my company”

“Exactly why I said she is stupid” George said and Caden sighed.

The room fell silent.

“How is she?” Caden asked, breaking the silence and George sighed, he knew who Caden was asking about.

“Good,” George replied.

“That’s all?” Caden frowned.

“You said you didn’t want me to give anymore information about her even if you asked and I won’t,” George replied. “Handle Beatrice and Lia then we would talk about her” he added and Caden fell quiet again.

{LOS ANGELES~EMILY’S APARTMENT~6PM}

“Thank you for dropping me off Luke” Emily said with a small smile.

“No problem” Luke replied, he gave out an awkward smile and rubbed the back of his neck. “Since tomorrow is an off day, would you like to have lunch with me?” Luke asked.

Emily sighed, how many more times is she going to reject this dude. “Luke, I already told you, I am not ready for a relationship”

“I know, it’s just one lunch,” Luke pleaded.

“My friend is coming over tomorrow and she won’t stay long in Los Angeles so I have to keep her company” Emily informed.

“Ohh right, sorry, good night” Luke said and walked towards his car, he got in and drove off.

Emily watched the car go before walking into the building, she slumped on the couch with a loud thump as she let out a tired breath.

She was beginning to feel bad for Luke, she had been rejecting him for three months now but he really didn’t want to give up.

There’s no way she is giving love another chance after what happened with Caden.

She wasn’t lying when she said her friend was coming over, Madison would arrive in Los Angeles tomorrow morning and she would leave in the evening.

It’s been six months since she last saw Madison and she was excited to see her.

Emily stood up from the couch and walked into her bedroom to have a bath.

_

{NEXT MORNING}

Emily was woken up by the loud knock on her door, she opened her eyes slowly and stood up from the bed.

She barely had enough sleep last night because she was awake watching a movie till 2AM.

Emily opened the door and she met Madison’s angry face. “Madison” Emily said, sleep disappearing from her eyes at the sight of her friend.

“Yes… Me…. Who has been knocking for past one hour” Madison scoffed and walked past Emily into the house.

“Oh shît, I totally forgot, why didn’t you call me?” Emily asked, locking the door.

“Ohhh why didn’t I think of that” she said sarcastically “Check your phone you dummy, I called you a million times!” Madison yelled.

Emily chuckled awkwardly. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t know you would come this early” she apologized.

“Early? Girl… It’s almost noon” Madison rolled her eyes and sat on the couch.

“Seriously?” Emily’s eyes widened.

“I can’t believe this is how I am welcomed after six months” Madison replied and Emily smiled.

“I’m so happy to see you,” Emily said and hugged Madison.

“I was happy to see you till you kept me outside for almost 2 hours” Madison replied and Emily chuckled.

“Really sorry about that” Emily apologized again.

“Whatever, I forgive you, how’s life in Los Angeles” Madison asked.

“The same question you asked the last time you came and it’s still the same answer, it’s great” Emily answered.

“Better than New York?” Madison asked and Emily frowned.

“Well… That’s arguable but I like it here, no drama” Emily responded.

“Urghh it’s terrible” Madison said and Emily smiled. “It’s been a year Ems, it’s perfectly safe for you to come back to New York” Madison started.

“You know I can’t, I won’t be able to bear it” Emily replied.

Even after a year, her heart still clenches at the thought.

“You don’t have too, they’re not even married, I feel like Caden doesn’t want to marry her, I mean engaged for a year with no talk of marriage? That’s nuts” Madison shrugged and Emily pressed her lips together.

That’s what she was avoiding, this tiny burst of hope in her.

She didn’t want it, she wanted to move on, she had already moved on… She believes.

Caden is in her past and she has done everything possible not to hear anything about him, she didn’t care what he did with his life.

“I have no plans of coming back to New York, I hope you understand that” Emily said and Madison sighed.

“Alright, whatever you say” Madison replied and Emily smiled.

“Enough about New York, I made pancakes last night, I would heat it up for you” Emily said and Madison’s face fell.

Madison chuckled awkwardly. “You did?” She asked in a not so excited voice.

“Yeah… My cooking has improved” Emily informed.

“I highly doubt that, my taste buds know better” Madison replied and Emily frowned. “Bring it for tasting” Madison replied with a sigh and Emily rushed into the kitchen joyfully.

{BELMONT HOTEL~2PM}

Caden sat on the soft sofa in a private room inside the hotel.

He was waiting for someone and it is clear that person doesn’t want people to know they were meeting. That’s why this hotel was picked for their meet up.

Caden tapped his hand cautiously on the armrest, he was getting impatient.

No one makes Caden Kingston wait.

The door opened and a familiar figure entered the room.

“I’m glad you came” James smiled and Caden gave him a lazy look.

“You made me wait,” Caden said instead.

“Sorry, I had to make sure I wasn’t followed” James replied and sat on the sofa opposite Caden.

“Speak, I don’t have all day,” Caden said coldly.

“Have you heard from Emily? I haven’t seen her considering you are engaged to Lia” James said

“That’s none of your concern, don’t waste my time, we both know how much I don’t like you” Caden replied.

“I knew she deserved better than you, anyway, let’s get down to business” James started. “We have a common enemy and I need you help”

“What common enemy? What makes you think I would help you?” Caden asked with a raised eyebrow.

“I’m pretty sure you’ve figured out Beatrice didn’t work alone, someone helped her and yes, I know about your step mother, I know who that person is because that same person also wanted me to take your position in the Kingston enterprises” James informed.

Caden’s face didn’t show any physical change but he wanted to know more, this is way more complicated than he thought.

He wondered why James would just pop out of nowhere and want to replace him.

He also wondered how his father and James met, turns out there’s a bigger puzzle to solve.

“Who is this person?” Caden asked.

“I would tell you but you have to promise me one thing first” James said.

Caden sighed. “Really?”

“That’s why I came to you, only you can help me and I would help you in return, I don’t like you, trust me but i need your help, your power as the president of lunatex corp” James replied.

“What do you want?” Caden asked.

“My sister-”

“I’m not marrying your sister, I already have Lia to deal with” Caden interrupted.

“What? No! There’s no way I would allow that and she’s nine years old!” James frowned.

“Ohh that’s good” Caden replied, his expression not changing even a little bit.

“I need you to protect her, he already had my parents kîlled and he is using my sister to threaten me, he hasn’t given me orders yet but he would want to use her to get me to do his will, I need her to be safe, I can’t protect her enough” James said.

“And I am helping you because?” Caden asked.

“Because I would tell you who the enemy is and help you deal with him” James responded.

“I can just force it out of you,” Caden replied.

“Don’t…. please….” James pleaded.

“Alright” Caden agreed and James smiled. “If you double cross me it would be over for you” Caden threatened.

“I wouldn’t, trust me” James replied.

{AIRPORT~7PM}

“Can’t you stay till tomorrow?” Emily asked.

“I would love to, but I have work tomorrow, I can’t afford to have a penny deducted from my salary” Madison answered.

“Alright, I’m glad you came,” Emily said and hugged Madison.

“It would be so much better if you follow me to New York, think about it… Please, for me” Madison said and Emily sighed.

“I would” Emily replied even though she already made up her mind never to go to New York again.

“Thank you, I have to go now, bye” Madison said and turned to leave.

“Don’t forget to call me!” Emily said and Madison nodded.

Emily’s phone vibrated in her pocket as she watched Madison go and she brought it out.

Her mother.

“Evening mom, what’s the occasion?” Emily said over the phone.

“We haven’t seen each other since you left and I just want to know how you’re doing,” Layla said.

“I’m okay, thanks, how’s you and dad?” Emily asked.

“I’m alright but your dad has been grumpy, probably angry you left even though he told you not too” Layla replied.

“He will get over it,” Emily said.

“It’s been a year, he hasn’t gotten over it” Layla scoffed.

“He would, eventually” Emily replied.

“Just come back, come visit us” Layla said.

“Mom, I can’t, we are not having this conversation anymore, say hi to dad for me, bye” Emily replied and hung up.

She sighed and pocketed her phone.

{HOSPITAL}

Caden walked into Anthony’s ward, Beatrice was already there sitting beside Anthony.

He slipped into a coma the day he was brought to the hospital, he is as good as dead right now.

Beatrice only kept Anthony alive because she liked to remind Caden what she was capable of if he ever tried to cross her.

“The company is thriving, don’t you think it’s about time to get married to Lia, that was the deal after all” Beatrice said to Caden but her gaze was on Anthony.

“I don’t necessarily have to help her plan the wedding, she can do whatever she wants and all I have to do is attend” Caden replied.

“You don’t even hide the fact that you don’t want to marry her” Beatrice scoffed. “Still thinking about that ex-wife of yours?” Beatrice asked.

“It doesn’t really matter now does it?” Caden said.

“Of course it doesn’t because she is in the past, help Lia plan the wedding like a perfect, loving fiance” Beatrice ordered. “I won’t ask again” she added, standing up and she walked out of the ward.

“I really should do something about her,” Caden muttered.

Beatrice has been barking orders at him for a year now and he was getting fed up.

He could end her in just a few seconds, she had no idea he had been planting his people by her side for the past year.

Those documents she hides in the locker in her bedroom isn’t going to stop him from doing whatever he wants.

He could get his hands on them whenever he wants but he just had to play her little game till he destroys the person behind her.

Caden would never have guessed who was helping Beatrice all these years, never in a million years.

He was more than surprised when James told him.

“You have lots of enemies Anthony” Caden said to his sleeping father. “Now I have to clean up your damn mess, again” he scoffed and walked out of the ward too.

_

Beatrice was in her car across the street when Caden came out of the hospital, he got into his car and drove off while she watched him go.

She was deep in thoughts as she watched the car go.

Her phone rang and it was the same number that called her yesterday, she didn’t pick yesterday but this man is relentless, he had been calling her since then.

“What?” Beatrice asked. “We are not supposed to speak to each other”

“You didn’t heed my warnings, why would you allow Caden to be the president?” The man asked.

“Because that’s the logical way to handle things, people would ask questions if I am named the president when my husband has a capable son” Beatrice fired. “He is under my control, he won’t do anything”

“Are you sure about that Beatrice? Are you really sure he is under your control?” The man asked.

“Yes, he is,” Beatrice replied, her voice lacking conviction.

The man at the other end was silent and Beatrice hung up.

She had already won, Anthony is no more a threat and she has the lunatex corporation and caden on the palm of her hands.

She would not be shaken.
