Two years had passed, and life had returned to normal. Everyone was living their lives as usual, still holding onto the hope that Shawn would return, especially Sofia. Despite going out with friends and focusing on her studies, her heart still longed for Shawn's return. She believed that he would come back for her someday.
Her eyes sparkled with determination as she delved into her academic pursuits, ensuring that when Shawn returned, he would be proud of her accomplishments.
It was her twentieth birthday, and everyone was secretly planning a surprise party for her. Sofia had explicitly stated that she didn't want a birthday celebration, but Troy had persuaded the others to throw her a surprise party anyway.
Mabel and Nina were in on the secret, and they devised a plan to take her out of the house. They convinced her to join them for a shopping trip to the mall, and Sofia, oblivious to the surprise awaiting her, agreed to go along.
As they left the house, the others sprang into action, busily preparing the surprise birthday party.
At the mall, Sofia, Mabel, and Nina were moving around, searching for something to buy. Sofia looked tired and frustrated, her eyes drooping.
"Are we going to be moving around like this all day till you two finally buy what you want?" Sofia asked tiredly, her voice laced with exasperation.
Nina smiled warmly. "Are you tired?" she asked.
Sofia's expression turned irritated. "Of course, I am tired! We have been moving around this mall for hours, and you two are making me dizzy," she yelled frustratedly.
Mabel and Nina tried not to laugh, their faces scrunched up in an effort to contain their smiles.
"Maybe what we are looking for is not here, let's go to the other side," Mabel suggested.
Sofia frowned, her eyes flashing with annoyance. "I am not going, I am tired," she said, and sat down.
"Should I get you water?" Nina offered.
Sofia shook her head. "Let's go home, maybe what you two are looking for is not available today, you can come next time," she said.
Mabel's eyes sparkled with mischief. "We haven't searched upstairs yet," she said, and took Sofia's hand.
Sofia's expression turned stubborn. "Let's go home, I am tired."
"We will once we found what we came here for."Nina's smile grew wider.
"It's almost nightfall."Sofia sighed.
Mabel winked at Nina, who smiled back. "We will get home before it gets darker," Mabel said.
Some hours later, they arrived home, and Nina teased Sofia about her frown. "Why are you frowning?"
Sofia's expression turned irritated. "I can't believe you two wasted my time at the mall."
Mabel chuckled. "We didn't mean to; we didn't find what we were looking for."
Nina smiled mischievously. "But we got this," and brought out a fancy pen. Sofia's frown deepened.
"That's a pen we can get anywhere."
Nina's smile grew wider. "But it's not as cheap in the mall."
They got down from the car and walked towards the door. Sofia's expression turned unimpressed.
"It would have been better sleeping at home all day than going to the mall with you guys."
As she turned to open the door, Nina and Mabel stood behind, waiting for the surprise that awaited Sofia.
Immediately she opened the door, a party popper blasted in her face, and everyone in the room screamed.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!" they said in unison.
Sofia's expression turned surprised, and she looked around, taking in the beautifully decorated room. The room was filled with red, gold, and white balloons, and streamers hung from the ceiling. A large banner with "HAPPY 20TH BIRTHDAY SOFIA" written in bold letters hung on the wall. The dining table were decorated with fancy tablecloths, and a large cake with candles sat on the main table.
"Happy birthday," Diana said, pulling Sofia into a warm hug.
Sofia feigned a frown. "You guys promised you wouldn't throw a party."
Troy smiled. "We couldn't do that; it was an order, and we have to follow. It's your twentieth birthday; it should be celebrated."
Sofia's expression turned sad. "What's there to celebrate when Shawn is not here to celebrate it with me?"
They sighed, and Grandma spoke up. "Come on, we made this place beautiful for you. You should go in and change, and then come down. Your dress is waiting for you inside."
Sofia's expression turned curious. "My dress?"
Troy nodded. "Yes."
"Let's go get you dressed."Mabel smiled.
As they walked away, along with Nina, the rest smiled after them.
After some minutes, Sofia climbed down the stairs, looking extremely gorgeous in her Purple Quinceañera Dress with a bow tie at the back and a little princess crown on her head. Everyone was amazed by her.
"Oh my, you look gorgeous!" Grandma exclaimed, her eyes wide with wonder.
Sofia's expression turned shy. "Thank you, but isn't this too much?" she asked.
Troy's expression turned reassuring. "No, it's your birthday, and you deserve the best."
Nina's eyes sparkled. "It's time to cut the cake."
They rolled the cake to Sofia, and Diana smiled. "Make a wish, dear."
Sofia sighed and closed her eyes, her hands held together. Everyone smiled at her, and after a while, she opened her eyes to blow off the candles. Suddenly, her eyes met Shawn's, standing by the doorstep, holding a bouquet of red roses. He looked handsome in his suit and was smiling faintly at her.
Everyone was surprised to see him, except Troy. Sofia took a step back, trying to process if it was really him standing at the door.
Troy whispered in her ear, "Go on, your man is standing right there."
Sofia's expression turned emotional as she moved closer to Shawn. Tears filled her eyes, and Shawn's eyes never left hers. He handed over the roses to one of his men and rushed to Sofia, pulling her tight into his arms.
Everyone was amused. Shawn's expression turned loving, and Sofia's turned tearful.
"I have missed you so much!"He sniffed, and Sofia burst into tears, holding him back. "I am here now, and I will never leave you again," He said.
Everyone became emotional, watching the scene in front of them.
"You came back," Sofia sobbed, hitting his back.
Shawn pulled away from her and caressed her face. "I am sorry for staying so long." "I missed you so much, Sofia," he said.
"You b3stard! How dare you?" she sniffed.
"I am sorry." He cleared her tears with his thumb. "You shouldn't mess up your makeup." He tease.
"Please tell me I am not dreaming right now."Her expression turned vulnerable.
Shawn smiled. "You are not; I am real."
They locked eyes, and they shared a soft kiss. Everyone in the room cheered them on.
"Alright, you can continue this romance later; let's blow off the candles."
Troy interrupted their moment
Shawn and Sofia broke the kiss, and he handed her the red roses.
"Happy birthday." He kissed her forehead, and Sofia smiled. "Before we blow the candles, there is another surprise for you," Shawn said, and everyone wondered.
Just then, the door opened, and Lucas entered, well-dressed in a fitted suit, smiling. Everyone was shocked.
"Dad?" Sofia called, surprised. He smiled, and his family rushed to hug him. Everyone smiled at them.
