KASARACHI
Kasarachi - Episode 33
(Tell it to God)
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
O yes! the instruction God gave me to carry out had nothing to do with money issues.
It was an entirely different thing which was to download my soft copy certificate and all my other academic documents. God further instructed me to save them and back it up using a Nigerian Google account and email.
I recall feeling very confused that day considering the fact that I was in Canada back then and I had no plans to use a Nigerian email or Google account for anything whatsoever.
Little did I know that God was preparing me for this my new reality.
I am happy that due to what God made me do then, I currently have something to show for my years in Canada. I still have my certificate and academic portfolio with me.
It is not physically with me but I have access to it. All I would need to do is to log into my Google account or email and download the original copy of the documents I want.
Then I can print it out as a hardcopy document whenever I need to make use of it here in Nigeria, maybe for job seeking.
I mean it's obvious that I will surely be needing a job for survival now that I am back to Nigeria financially incapacitated.
A few minutes later, it was announced that all passengers were to vacate the seats as the airplane had landed on the ground.
I suppose it is time to face my new reality!
One of the officers released the handcuffs on me and together we walked out of the plane with me no longer a detainee.
Before stepping out, I was told by the officers that the plane just landed at an airport in Anambra state, Nigeria.
Yes! I am actually an indigene of Anambra state and the officers already know all of these vital details about my locality. Since I had provided them information about my origin during my interrogation in Canada.
My village is situated in a rural area. It is one of the underdeveloped and marginalized communities that is long overdue for government intervention.
The government didn't care much about doing anything regarding our situation in terms of providing good roads, treated water, and affordable secondary schools for primary school graduates. That is why we had no choice but to manage it like that.
After I stepped out of the plane with the four officers, we walked a few distance away from the airplane and that is when I began looking around my environment.
From the atmosphere, I could tell that it was late evening maybe probably 4 or 5pm now.
I thought the officers were going to release me to find my way home from here but they asked me to follow them. I followed them obediently without asking questions although I was wondering what was up.
I was surprised when they asked me to enter a taxi which was being packed at a small garage around the airport area. From the few vehicles packed there, it seems the garage is mainly for packing of vehicles.
There was a driver inside the car which probably means that he has been waiting for our arrival all along. Wow! It actually seems like the legal force had this arranged.
I am beginning to think that maybe they do make provisions for transportation of deportee(s), but anyhow it is, I still need clarification so as to avoid problems later.
Heaven knows I do not have any money to pay in case I am just assuming things about the transportation being sorted out.
That is why before obeying his command to enter the car, I had to ask the officer the troubling question on my mind
"Please sir, where am I going to be driven to....?" I asked him respectfully
"We are driving you to your village Miss Kasarachi. Four of us are usually entrusted with our deportees safety until after they've arrived at their country and hometown. As reliable officers who have our country's name to uphold, we do ensure that we efficiently carry out our job to the last by dropping the deportees at their doorstep" The officer replied me with his thick Canadian accent and baritone voice
Did he just say WE? So it means that all the four of us are going together...? Ah! But what about the transportation ehhhhhh...?
I used to follow mother to this developed part of town to buy our Christmas clothes, that is when father was still alive and things were going well for us financially. So I should be familiar with the roads coming from and going back to the village.
On one of our trips, I was told by mother that drivers prefer collecting their transport fare before starting the journey in this part of town. Their fear is that the passengers may jilt them when they eventually arrive at their destination.
That is why I am becoming scared because in the officer's previous statement, he did not say anything that points to the transport cost being sorted out by them. This likely means that I am probably the one meant to pay for the transport expense.
Ah no, I have no cash on me right now!
"Please sir, I think you should drop me here because I do not have any money to pay the driver for his transport fare right now. Except he would take us to my village and then when we arrive....my mother will pay for me" I said pleadingly hoping that he will agree and talk to the driver on my behalf.
"Not to worry Miss Kasarachi....the transportation charges are covered by the legal team" The officer answered politely.
He instructed me to enter the vehicle for the second time of which I happily obeyed unlike the first time that I was reluctant.
Me and three officers sat at the passenger seat of the vehicle while one of the officers had to sit at the front seat next to the driver.
The driver was handed a piece of paper by the officer beside him which I believe has my community address written on it. Then he instructed him to start driving the car and the driver hit the road immediately.
Deep within me, I am feeling very thankful because I was really worried sick and also overthinking on how to transport myself to the village when I have no money on me.
There would have been nowhere to stay if I didn't go to the village today, which means I would have likely slept on the streets or begged passersby for money to pay my way back home.
Either of the two options would have been so shameful for me and I'm thankful to God that I didn't get to experience all of that.
I was angry with God earlier in the plane but right now, my heart is filled with massive gratitude because I know this can only be him at work. My Lord is truly the father of the helpless!
The driver politely asked me for directions when he reached certain diverse junctions and was confused on where to opt for.
I showed him the directions he needed and after driving for about twenty minutes, I could see the entrance of my village ahead.
We soon drove into my village and as the driver asked me where he would be stopping me, I became confused.
I don't know the exact places my two new houses that my uncle built for me are located or even the area where my first house is situated which is the place my family currently stays. I suppose that I will first need to arrive at uncle Okafor's place who would then take me there by himself.
I can still remember the path that leads to my uncle's place. So I pointed to the driver a straight path to follow that would arrive at uncle Okafor's house.
As we drove into the narrow path, all of the fond memories I have had with my family here in the village started drifting into my mind and that sense of longing filled me.
Nothing much has really changed except that some of the roads were now tarred unlike before when it wasn't, and some of the houses looked newly built or renovated.
I breathe a heavy sigh as I realized that I may have subdued my inner feelings about missing my hometown for all of these years.
I had been too preoccupied by Canada's comfort such that I had no intentions of returning here even to see my family.
Who knows....? Maybe that is why God orchestrated what happened to me so I can return to my roots where I come from. I thought within me as I hissed inaudibly.
The driver arrived at the entrance of uncle Okafor's house and the officers asked me to go out of the car, that they had finally reached where I directed them to.
I tiredly went out of the car and thanked them for their kindness towards me. I waited until they drove away before I walked into uncle Okafor's compound.
Uncle Okafor was sitting outside and eating with his wife when I walked in. From his facial expression, I could tell that he was feeling very surprised to see me there.
"Wait ooo...Kasarachi is that you I am seeing or has my eyesight become so bad that I am now imagining people that aren't here....?" Uncle Okafor asked standing up from his chair and I chuckled for the first time today.
"Uncle it is me Kasarachi, your first niece. You aren't imagining things. I am the one you are seeing in flesh and blood!" I said smiling broadly as I walked closer to him.
Uncle Okafor exclaimed joyfully but I noticed that his wife didn't seem happy to see me, I wonder why. Well I don't really care about her, since we have never really been on good terms in the past anyways.
When I was within close distance, I hugged uncle Okafor happily and he wrapped his arms around me whilst saying 'welcome home'. I heard his wife hiss before packing the food plates and going inside the house.
After uncle Okafor and I disengaged from the hug, he asked me if my luggage was outside so he could send one of his daughters to help in picking it up for me.
My face twitched in sadness as I told him that there was no luggage anywhere and when he asked me why, I told him that it was a long story which I will tell him later.
Uncle Okafor pleaded with me to come in, eat a meal, freshen up and rest then we could go to my first house tomorrow.
I had to tell him not to worry that I would love to see my family first of all before I can do anything like eat and rest. I pleaded with him to please take me to where my family stays as it was beginning to get dark already
Uncle Okafor was not pleased with my decision to stress myself again for today but he had to agree after much back and forth.
It was a ten minute walk and then we arrived at a fenced house with a wired black gate.
It is the same with the pictures and videos evidences that uncle Okafor and mama sent to me via Whatsapp when I was in Canada.
Honestly, I was blown away! I had to ask Uncle Okafor to hold on with knocking the gate and let me admire the beautiful building in front of me very well.
I stood outside admiring the house that I gave every penny for its building. It isn't as large as a mansion but it is moderately built with six rooms to comfortably accommodate a family of our size.
The exterior was looking so lovely and the painting and designs are exactly how I told uncle Okafor that I wanted it to be.
Oh I'm feeling super excited and I can't wait to see what the inside looks like too. I am guessing that it is going to be lovely as well.
I smilingly told uncle Okafor 'thank you very much once again' and then I gave him the go ahead to knock on the gate.
Uncle knocked continuously before a voice answered behind the gate saying we should please exercise patience for some time, that the gate will soon be opened for us shortly.
I was still smiling from ear to ear out of immense happiness that I Kasarachi Arinze of yesterday is now two houses owner.
In less than two minutes, we heard the sound of keys and then the gate was unlocked. The smaller gate in the middle was pulled open from behind and the person who opened it got revealed.
That is when my bright smile gradually faded away and it was replaced by surprise at who opened the gate for us!
I was expecting to see Mama but instead I am seeing this unfortunate person and now my previous happy mood is totally ruined.
"Oh Kasarachi. You are finally here. Welcome home. Please do come in" The person said smiling sheepishly and my frown deepened even more.
What is this person doing here after everything....? To imagine that the person is even smiling while telling me to come inside my own house....? Does this place look like a free abode or what....?
"Heiiii You! What exactly are you doing in my house....?" I asked boiling with fury.
They stared at me as if I wasn't making sense
What exactly is going on here.
