KASARACHI

Kasarachi - Episode 5

(Tell it to God)

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

" Aunty Ijeoma..? What is she doing here...?" I thought in my head as I watched her come into our sitting room. She's still clapping her hands and ranting on top of her voice

Aunty Ijeoma is Ekene and Chinonso's mother. It's obvious that she was secretly eavesdropping on us earlier to have heard our conversation. I don't even know why she is here in the first place, but I'm guessing it is related to my supposed marriage with her eldest son Nonso

" Aru! Abomination. Nkiru so these are your plans...? You are planning to bring abomination into my home...?" Aunty ijeoma asked looking at mama intently

I turned my eyes to the wall clock and saw the time to be a few minutes past 11am. I'm supposed to be weeding Mazi Olu's farm by now, if not for all these issues. I'm praying he hasn't decided to give the job out to someone else as we really need that money

" Good morning Aunty Ijeoma" I greeted her. She looked at me briefly without answering my greetings and returned her attention to Mama who remained quiet.

Uncle Okafor fired at her which took her attention away from mother over to him

" Bia Ijeoma I have always known you to be insolent. So it has reached the extent of coming into someone's house without knocking to seek permission...?"

" Mechie onu there! Shameless man! She told you that my second son slept with her yet you still want to marry her out to my first son...knowing it is an abomination in this community. Do you want my son to stay without children for the rest of his life...?"

" Calm down. It's not like that Ijeoma. We were still discussing it. Kasarachi here said she is sexually active with Ekene. I know it is an abomination in our community... and the repercussion would be on both parties. So I would not have consented to such a marriage no matter what Mazi Okafor said" mama said in a bid to pacify Aunty Ijeoma

" I'm happy that your senses are working correctly Nkiru. Your daughter would suffer the consequence of not having children too"

" I know that Ijeoma. Since Kasarachi and Ekene has been sexually intimate. We can accept Nonso his brother's marriage offer" mama said dismissively to uncle's displeasure

" Well I came here because of my son's marriage to your daughter but now it's seems there's nothing more to discuss. So in exchange for eavesdropping on you people and bashing in here without knocking...I will just pretend that I never heard what your inlaw said earlier" Aunty Ijeoma said flippantly as she looked at Uncle for the last time, hissed loudly and then walked out.

" You see what you've caused eh Kasarachi...? You are just sixteen years old but as small as you are...you are already doing what adults ought to be doing. Tell me Kasarachi..did you enjoy the act...?" Uncle Okafor asked sarcastically probably to make me feel bad. It's a good thing that mama stepped in to warn him off

" Nnayi! What sort of question is that...? It's embarrassing so please stop it already"

" Why am I not surprised...? The apple they say does not fall far from the tree. I'm sure engaging in premarital sex is what you used to do in this community before you married my brother. And now you are trying to teach the same thing to your daughter"

" Nnayi it's actually none of your business if it's truly what I used to do before marrying your brother. I don't think I owe you such an explanation but then let me set something straight. For the records..I Nkiru met and married your brother, my late husband as an untouched woman" mama said with all confidence. I could dictate the pride in her voice as she looked at Uncle

" Nkiru then it means that you did not train your daughter very well. If not how does she know how to do adult things...? Now we are going to lose out on this golden opportunity because of her misbehavior"

I sighed heavily as I realized the gravity of what I've done. I decided to apologize for messing things up for them even though I actually regret nothing. I simply cannot marry a man that I don't know or love

" I'm sorry uncle. Mama I am sorry for letting you down. I honestly didn't want to do it that day but Ekene persuaded me. He threatened to break up with me and because of the love I have for him...I had to give into his desires. I'm really sorry"

Mama did not even reply to my apology when uncle interrupted with his rants

" Sorry for yourself Kasarachi!! Will your sorry reverse what you've done...? Right now we would have been discussing how you'll leave to obodo oyibo but no...you've blown it away. And for that foolish boy that made you sleep with him...I will report him to our kinsmen. Ekene must be arrested"

Uncle Okafor was just ranting on and on until mama got provoked.
For me I was just quietly fuming inside while wondering what this man thinks of me. Do I look like a commodity to him...? Golden opportunity indeed! He should better leave my Ekene alone oh.

Mama stood up and began walking out while uncle was still talking which got him more angry. I suppose he felt disrespected because he blurted out in a thunderous tone

"...I am talking and you are walking out Nkiru...? Is that what you've now learnt...?"

" Nnayi I have a business to attend to. I can't be sitting here exchanging words with you that have food on your table. I understand that what Kasarachi did is bad. I'm not in support of premarital sex either but then the harm has been done already. " mama answered uncle and then turned to me

" Kasaramma please help me check on why your siblings are not yet up and out of the room. I know you're late already but still prepare and go to the farm of Mazi Olu. Let me pack up from outside so I'll make the remaining pap and yams as breakfast for everybody. I want you to eat before going"

" Okay mama. I will do that right away" I said as I stood up and made my way towards my room.

I am very much happy to be out of my uncle's toxicity. That man talks a lot like a woman such that I wonder how his family especially his wife copes with him

Getting to the door of the room I heard my siblings voices jiggling. Judith was calling Binta's name and telling her to pick two. Chika with his tiny childish voice was jeering them on to win each other. They are probably playing a whot game.

I shook my head because I am not surprised that they are awake. It's mid morning so it's normal that they should be awake already. They can't assist much in the house running so mama allows them lazy about most times

Immediately they sighted me walking into the room, they tried hiding the whot not knowing that I had seen them already. The three of them greeted me simultaneously

" Good morning sister Kasarachi"

" Good morning. So you three are awake and all you could think about is to play whot game all morning...? Do you know that it is almost 12 in the afternoon...?"

" I wasn't playing the whot with them oh. I was just watching them" Chika quickly said with his hands raised up, which got me chuckling at his childish behavior

" We are sorry sister Kasarachi" Judith and Binta said in unison. I smiled at them before I began issuing out instructions

" Judith you are old enough to sweep the compound so quickly go and pick a broom. As for you Binta...start arranging this room and mama's room. Osinachi and I will wash the plates and every other thing that needs to be done...is that understood...?"

They nodded except for Chika who seems sad for always being left without a chore. He understands that he is too young to do anything. To make him feel happy, I decided to engage him with something that will keep him active like others

" Chika you come and help me arrange the plates when I am done washing okay...?" I said to Chika and walked out of the room

A small smile creeped out of Chika's lips as he jumped in excitement and followed behind me to the kitchen.

It wasn't until I entered the kitchen and began packing the dirty plates into a bowl that I realized that he wasn't following behind me again. He must have turned back midway to God knows where

I shrugged probably thinking that he must have changed his mind and decided to play outside. It's even for the best so that I will be faster without his usual distractions

It was not until Judith ran into the kitchen breathing very fast. She was taking in air in gulps as though someone was pursuing her. That's when I became very worried

" Sister o..fire! Fire!" Judith was just stuttering and breathing very fast

" Fire...? Where..? Where...?" My mind immediately went to Chika

" Where is Chika...? Hope nothing is happening to him...?"

" Chika is outside playing sister. That's not what I want to tell you sister"

" Calm down Judith. Take a deep breath. Okay start talking now"

" Sister Kasarachi the fire I'm talking about is.." before Judith could finish talking I heard sounds outside

I was tired of waiting for Judith to respond to my question so I quickly rushed out to check what was with the commotion outside.

My eyes nearly left their sockets by the time I got out there. Oh my God, I was wowed!
