KASARACHI

Kasarachi - Episode 18

(Tell it to God)

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

I dragged Aunty Brenda on her right leg and she lost balance such that she fell face down on the carpet laid on the floor.
I guess she never saw it coming else she would have tried to avoid the move I took.

I didn't even care if I was being !nsulting or acting out of my moral values. I went and stood beside Aunty Brenda as I spoke angrily whilst pointing my hands at her

"I have never talked back or insulted you before Aunty Brenda no matter the abμsive words you use on me...but insulting my family is a big no. You even brought my late father into this. What makes you think if he was alive...I will be here enduring all the bμllsh*ts you continually throw at me...?"

Aunty Tochi was shocked when I said that and she was even more bewildered with what I did earlier to Aunty Brenda out of anger. I suppose it got her wondering where a sixteen year old girl like me actually got the boldness from.

I'm not even surprised because a lot of people have always commented on how I talk and behave older than my actual age.
That's why the majority of people in the village didn't really try some n*nsense with me.

"Kasarachi is it me you pushed down....? Me Brenda...? For this thing you've done today eh...you are either leaving this house permanently or I leave and withdraw my part of the rent!" Aunty Brenda said angrily as she got up from the floor and dusted her clothes to rid herself of sand

From her flushed cheeks I could tell that she was feeling so embarrassed but trying hard to mask it by running her mouth as usual

"Babe please calm down. You know Kasarachi is still a child. She is like a junior sister to us so tamper justice with mercy" Aunty Tochi said pleadingly and it looked like it was inflating Brenda's ego the more

"A child you say...? Fiona does this girl behave like a child to you....? She's an old woman in a small girl's body...." Aunty Brenda said harshly and sized me up as though I was disgusting.

I stood there quietly and refused to talk so I will not aggravate the situation.
I was actually scared of being thrown out as I had nowhere else to go in this city.

Aunty Brenda continued talking before Aunty Tochi could reply in my defense

"...see Fiona I respect you...and that's why I haven't given her the beatings of her life this minute. We need our privacy so send her back to the hole she crawled out from!"

I just couldn't help opening my mouth to talk when I heard her say those words

"This is not in any way insulting you Aunty Brenda but I just want to correct you. I didn't crawl out from any hole. I have a home and even though it is in the village...I am still very proud of where I come from!"

"Fiona did you hear her...? This girl has no manners at all! Well like I said earlier send her packing. Starting from today I'm going to give you three days to choose if I should be the one to go or she packs and leaves our house. It's as simple as that!" Brenda said conclusively and left the room clamming the door on her way out.

Aunty Tochi went and sat on the bed and kept looking at me strangely. For a few seconds she didn't say anything and I didn't say anything either. I stood there in silence.

Then she broke the silence and recounted what she said on the first day I came here

"Kasarachi I remember telling you before today that you are now in the city and not in the village. I know you love your mum but she isn't here to protect you so I had advised you to grow up and try to adjust!" Aunty Tochi said and paused to exhale heavily before she continued talking

"...Brenda pays more than half of the rent to this apartment. If she leaves now and I refund her part of the rent...the expenses will be bothersome for me alone to handle. So no matter the level of provocation...you shouldn't have reacted that way knowing she is your benefactor and senior too"

I kept my head down as I listened to Aunty Tochi attentively and didn't interrupt her throughout until she was done talking.

I breathed heavily in remorse and slowly walked to where Aunty Tochi sat. I went on my knees in front of her after realizing that she is right about what she said earlier.

That no matter the level of provocation I shouldn't have reacted the way I did towards Aunty Brenda who is my senior and benefactor. I should have ignored her words and tried to control my emotions.

"I'm sorry Aunty Tochi for letting you down. I know it isn't easy for you to accommodate and take responsibility for me but you still do so. Yes you're right...I shouldn't have reacted that way towards Aunty Brenda no  matter what. I was so angry that I didn't realize I'll go that far...." I said remorsefully and sighed deeply before continuing

"....Aunty Tochi I'm aware this isn't supposed to be an excuse for my bad behavior and that is why I am apologizing to you first. I promise that I will apologize to Aunty Brenda too and get her to forgive me"

Aunty Tochi nodded her head in understanding and told me to get up that she holds nothing in her heart against me.

"I think Brenda is the one you should be apologizing to first and not me. I will advise you to do that in the evening not immediately. Right now she is still angry at you but lets hope she calms down later...." Aunty said getting up from the bed and re-straighting the bedsheets

"....I will also do my best in begging her on your behalf. Lets just pray she changes her mind about the moving out part Kasarachi" Aunty Tochi said dismissively as she began making her way towards the door

I stood up from my kneeling position and asked her the troubling question on my mind. I need to know where I stand in all of  this should in case things do not go as planned with apologizing to Aunty Brenda.

"So Aunty Tochi what if Aunty Brenda still doesn't change her mind...what would then happen...? Would you throw me out into the streets like she desires...?"

"I'm confused and I don't know yet Kasarachi. You know I care about both you and Brenda. I wouldn't want to stay without either of you and that's why I'm praying she accepts your apology and changes her mind. If not I might be forced to let one of you go for the other to stay" Aunty Tochi replied to my question parabolically, before she walked out and closed the door behind her.

I laid on Aunty Tochi's bed in a solemn mood as I reminisce on her last statement.
I was completely lost in thoughts and kept staring at the ceiling in silence while seriously thinking about my life.

I was rhetorically asking myself who will be the one Aunty Tochi is going to choose over the other....? It might certainly not be me!

So many things were troubling my mind that I totally forgot about the fact that I am yet to collect my money from Aunty Tochi.

I know it's the genesis of this whole problem in the first place but there are more important things to worry about now.

Firstly I don't know how Aunty Tochi's mind works so I can't tell what will happen if Aunty Brenda doesn't reverse her decision.

Secondly right from the onset, I noticed that Aunty Brenda wasn't so comfortable with having me in the house. She had tried to hide her displeasure most times but being an intuitive person, I still picked the cues.

That's why I won't be surprised if this could be the opportunity she has been seeking for in order to send me out into the streets.

I'm just wondering what will become of me if Aunty Tochi chooses her roommate over me. Would I be going back to the village and what will become of me from then on...?

I continued thinking and asking myself questions upon questions with no answers.

My mind became more like a battle field with so many things going on there. But yet no w*apons to tune down the unseen troubling thoughts and worries.

I soon dozed off without having dinner and nobody bothered to wake me up to eat. The hungry worms in my stomach were what woke me up around 3am in the morning.

Aunty Tochi was the only one laying in Brenda's bed sleeping soundly. I wonder why she's there instead of her bed and where the bed owner went. I'm guessing maybe she is urinating in the bathroom.

I was so famished that I had to find my way to the kitchen so I could find what to eat. It makes me miss mama in the village a lot. She would have ensured she woke me up to eat dinner before going to bed for the night.

Getting into the sitting room that led to the kitchen, I met Aunty Brenda sitting on one of the sofas eating shawarma with roasted chicken and drinking a hollandia yogurt.

I got to know the names of these items Aunty Brenda is eating through my customers and fellow sellers in the market. Naturally I am a curious person so I love asking questions and learning anytime I see something I've never seen or know before.

I greeted her but she totally ignored me and acted like I didn't exist. I breathe in and out as I walked towards where she sat down.

I went down on my knees in front of her. With my head bent, I tendered my apology for what I did to her yesterday and I even promised not to repeat such behavior again.

"Aunty Brenda I am very sorry for what I did to you earlier. I admit that I acted unruly and that's why I'm apologizing. Please forgive me for all I said and for making you fall down. I promise you Aunty Brenda that it will never happen again"

Aunty Brenda's response to my apology later made me regret not swallowing my apology and going on my way in peace.

"Get up Kasarachi!" Aunty Brenda said after listening to me and I slowly got my feet wondering if she has forgiven me or what.

"I will forgive you but it's not for free. I mean I'm not your Aunty Tochi so my forgiveness comes with a condition" Aunty Brenda said flippantly as she chewed on her chicken and threw the bones on my body

"What is the condition Aunty Brenda...?" I asked rolling my eyes irritably while hoping in my heart that it is not what I'm thinking

She smirked as though mischievous thoughts came into her head and I was right about my speculation. It also didn't take me too long to know what they were when she tabled her ridiculous conditions....
