THE K1LLER'S KNIFE
The K1ller's Knife - Episode 40
" My name is Nadia.. I'm Wedi's wife. My husband was one of your father's friends. Your mother rented this shop to me before she relocated" Mrs Nadia said and walked to the door of the shop.
She took out a bunch of keys from her purse and opened the door which means that true to her words the shop was rented to her.
" It seems you already know my name and what happened between my mother and I... that's why you talked about me being freed. So how did you know...?" I asked eyeing her suspiciously
" Your mother Felicia told me out of trust about what happened between you two but she told me to keep it confidential. Yesterday when my husband told me that he met you at the pr¡son counter last month...I immediately suspected that it could be the reason why your mother left town" Mrs Nadia explained and I was alarmed at the revelation.
Why would mother tell an outsider something like that...? Doesn't she know that people are not to be trusted...?
Mrs Nadia chuckled as she saw my facial expression and look of suspicion. She brought out a chair and offered me a seat inside the shop
" ...don't worry Jacob I have kept it to myself and not even my husband knows what she told me. Please take a seat"
I sat down because by now my mind was a little at rest. Somehow my spirit told me that she is a trustworthy person.
At this point, I am desperate to see my family so I didn't even waste time to ask her the tr0ubling question on my mind
" Please ma'am do you know where I can find my mother and sisters..?"
Mrs Nadia shook her head back and forth which meant a no to my question. I was feeling frustrated and down in spirit but I tried to act like all was okay
Mrs Nadia observed and she sighed sadly after seeing the frustration on my face and went further to explain
" She didn't tell where she relocated to Jacob. I was even surprised myself when I went to her house and found it locked. Your sisters were nowhere to be found as well and when I asked the neighbors...they told me that she packed out. So I'm guessing she didn't want to be traced... that's why she left town without disclosing her current address"
" I don't know why mother hÃ¥tës me so much and is finding it so hard to forgive me. Is my cr¡me that unforgivable...?" I asked with a shaky voice
" Try and understand how hard it is for your mother. You k¡lled her husband who happens to be your father Jacob. I believe it still hμrts her very much especially when she craves a man's touch as a woman, the warmth of a man...if you understand what I mean but can't have it... because her son deprived her of such!" Mrs Nadia said in a very gentle tone probably being cautious not to hürt my feelings or emotions
" I know mother is still húrting Mrs Nadia and I admit that I was stμp¡d. I allowed my ánger to override my reasoning and I did what was wrong. I r£gretted it and had to pay the price by spending four years of my life in pr¡son" I blurted out almost close to crying
" She told me all that Jacob but I feel she doesn't want you close to her anymore. Maybe seeing you constantly brings back those painful memories in which she is trying so hard to get away from"
" I still want to see her Mrs Nadia. I will continue begging her until she finally forgives me. But if eventually she chooses never to forgive me until the end then I'll take it as my forever pμn¡shment and let her be" I said as I used my hands to wipe the tears that was beginning to drop from my eyes
Mrs Nadia was short of words to say in order to comfort me. She seems like a nice woman who is non judgemental. From her soothing words, she is a compassionate person too
" Jacob I can actually help you in tracing her whereabouts. I know someone who can tell us the address but it will be really hard" Mrs Nadia said very slowly
Hearing that from her, my spirit was uplifted and I immediately sat up from the chair to listen very well
" Really Mrs Nadia...? You have a way we can trace her and my sisters...? Who is the person you are talking about that can help us...?" I asked with excitement
Mrs Nadia sighed heavily and seems reluctant to say anything. She later gave me a response and it got me wondering what was making her reluctant to let it out in the first place
" I know her personal taxi driver who helped her convey goods to the shop when she was still here. I was even the one who referred her to him when she complained about the work ethics of the previous driver. I believe it is him she contacted to help her pack out too"
" Ah! Thank goodness. Please lets go there immediately Mrs Nadia. I'll understand if you don't want to get involved...you can just direct me to his house and I'll take it up from there" I said and happily stood up from the chair
Nadia's next words made me feel down in my spirit again. I then understood why she was reluctant to talk earlier
" It isn't as easy as it seems Jacob. Mark will not want to disclose such sensitive information without seeking the customer's consent. Him telling us about the address will simply mean going against work ethics and betraying a customer's confidentiality terms"
I took a deep breath and went down on my knees in front of Mrs Nadia to show her how serious I was to find mother
" Please Aunt help me. I believe there's a way you can convince him to give us the address and since you referred him to mother for the personal driver job...he will respect you and tell us. I promise not to reveal his name or yours as the architect behind tracing mother!"
Mrs Nadia looked at me for minutes without uttering any word. She later helped me up and promised to help me talk to Mark in the best way she can.
It wasn't easy to convince Mark to tell us where he last dropped mother. In fact he had blatantly refused letting us know
After constant pleading from Mrs Nadia and me, Mark finally gave us the address. He made us promise not to let mother know that he is the brain behind the whole disclosure and we agreed.
From the address, mother relocated to a town that was a little far away from the town we were staying at. Mrs Nadia didn't want to come with me to plead with mother so I had to go there alone.
On getting to the compound I was directed to, I saw mother washing clothes outside. I also saw two beautiful girls in front of the unpainted house.
One was standing and plaiting the other girl's hair, while the other one was sitting on a low stool. It's obvious she was gisting or saying something to the plaiter with the way her mouth was moving and laughing at the same time.
I smiled because I could easily recognize my sisters without a soothsayer, even though from all indications they have grown taller and fatter than before.
The one plaiting the hair is my sister Erica while Angie is the one sitting on the low stool and talking as her hair is being weaved by Erica.
Immediately they sighted me, Angie leaped out of the chair she was sitting and ran towards me. She threw herself on me and with her slightly short statue, I had to bend down so I could hug her
Erica was still overwhelmed to see me after four long years but she soon got over her moment of surprise. She also ran towards me and hugged me tightly
I engulfed them both in a tight warm embrace. My heart was overflowing with so much emotions and tears were uncontrollably flowing down my eyes.
" Jacob oh my God! Where have you been...? We've missed you so much!" They both chorused simultaneously
Oh, how I have missed them so very much too! Four years of not seeing or hugging them has been like h£ll to me!!!
" How dare you step your feet into this house!" Mother said cutting our moment of joy short. We had to disengage from the hug immediately.
Mother was looking at me furiously and with what I was seeing in her hands I began feeling scared for my life
" Get out! Get out of here now! Outttt!" Mother shouted at me with all of her strength scaring away Erica and Angie.
I stubbornly refused to go and instead went on my knees to beg her to forgive me for what happened in the past.
Out of the blues, mother did the unthinkable.
" What!!!!!!!!!!" Angie shouted very loud while Erica covered her mouth in shock.
