THE K1LLER'S KNIFE
The K1ller's Knife - Episode 38
" Sir Wedi!!!! Oh God! Longest time sir. Good afternoon" I shouted and greeted him feeling really surprised to see him here at the pr!son. I'm wondering who he came to see.
There were slight changes in him. He is fatter and more nourished than how I knew him to be before. It's probably why I didn't recognize him easily at first
Wedi was smiling as he walked closer to the counter and exclaimed happily
" Jacob my boy. You're all grown now. Ah! If only my friend is alive to see how much you've taken over his physique. Oh! I'm very happy to see you Jacob!"
Wedi mentioning father brought this sÃ¥d glint in my eyes but I brushed it off. I wouldn't let anyone rüÃn my joyous mood today which is my release day.
" I'm happy to meet you too Sir Wedi. I'm surprise to see you here. What are you doing here...?" I asked politely as I was unable to hold the question in anymore
" Oh, I came to see a junior relative who is imprÃsoned here. How about you...? Are you here to see someone...?"
I was confused on what response to give Wedi as I didn't want him to know about my imprÃsonment as well as my cr!me
It's a good thing that Mrs Riga saw my uneasiness and decided to bail me out by skipping in a response for me
" Yes he actually came to see me sir. I'm one of his mother's friends and I work here. I missed seeing my Godson so I called him earlier to pay me a visit... and as a good boy he honored my invite" Mrs Riga said looking at me fondly and afterwards she went completely silent
I was relieved and smiled looking at her feeling really thankful to God for the gift of her. I don't know what I would have done if she hadn't come into my life at this point in time. She is just so thoughtful and amazing!!!
" Jacob has always been a good boy. It's such a pity that my friend Jamie didn't see the wonderful gift of children he had, he didn't appreciate his offspring, it's sad that he's not here to see his handsome grown son ....but well it is in the past now. So tell me Jacob...how are you doing...?"
" I'm doing fine sir Wedi. How is your wife and everyone at home...?"
" They are fine. I'm happy to see that you are hale and hearty because the last time I saw your mother two years ago...she said that you ran away from home and never returned. I was wondering why you will do such a thing and honestly I was really worried about you" Wedi said looking at me and his tone showed pure concern for me
I was in awe at the excuse mother told him but then I am thankful that at least she didn't wash my dirty linen in public for all to know about my real cr!me.
" It's a long story Sir Wedi and I wouldn't want to talk about it now at least certainly not here. Maybe I'll tell you all about it when we meet next time" I said as a medium to dismiss him.
Deep down my heart, I had no intention of ever meeting Wedi again after today or to even explain anything to him
" No problem Jacob. Then I suppose we should exchange contacts so we will meet during the weekends...what do you think...?" Wedi said stretching his phone over to me so I'd type my phone number
I don't have a phone yet because I was in pr!son, but telling him that will seem deceptive since I'm twenty years of age.
I thought of what to type there and I opted to use Mrs Riga's phone number then but then I didn't have her contact
Wedi observed that I have been holding the phone for minutes now without attempting to type in my phone number, and out of concern he calmly spoke out
" ...what is the problem Jacob...? You've been holding the phone without typing anything. Is it that you don't know your phone number by head...?"
Hearing him say that gave me a bail out idea and I immediately nodded a yes
" You're right Sir Wedi. I have been trying to recall my phone number but I still can't...because I didn't even memorize it in the first place. I would have checked my phone but it was shut down so I had to leave it at home" I said whilst feigning a disappointed look.
I was thinking that he would give up on his quest for my phone contact but from what he said next, it seems I was wrong
" That's too bad Jacob. You should be able to recite your phone number to somebody at anytime and anywhere. Anyways there's no point crying over split milk. Let me write mine on a piece of paper for you...just call me when you get home so I'll have yours okay...?"
I nodded my head in affirmation and I watched as Wedi brought out a small pocket diary from his shirt pocket.
He tore a small piece out of it and inscribed something on it before handing it over to me. I collected the outstretched paper and looked at it to see a phone number written there
" No problem Sir Wedi. I'll call you once I get home and type the number on my phone...thank you very much" I said smiling sheepishly though in my heart I had no intention of dialing the number
" You are welcome Jacob. Take care of yourself for me and don't forget to call me so we will talk. Bye bye" Wedi said waving at me as he walked away.
I watched him walk into the visiting hall of the pr!son until he was completely out of sight. Mrs Riga was the one who spoke out first before I did
" You do know that it isn't a good idea meeting or telling him anything right...?"
" Of course Mrs Riga. I am no longer the 14 year old boy who acts without thinking anymore." I said gently to Mrs Riga who heaved a sigh of relief.
I wanted to throw the piece of paper away but I decided against it. It won't cause me anything to keep it so I will in case the need for him comes in handy.
Doctor Stanley soon arrived and I left with him in his car. We got to his house and his wife welcomed me warmly. I met their cute four year old son Zion and I must admit that Mrs Vivian is doing a good job in caring for him.
Mrs Vivian was back to her old nice self. She took good care of me and made sure I was comfortable and lacked nothing.
I enjoyed my stay with them but I wasn't acting freely or feeling too excited anymore like I was when I first came here as a sixteen year old Jacob.
Everyday the reminder of the fact that this isn't my home which means I don't belong here keeps ringing in my head.
This made me become more reserved and I just knew that I needed to get a life for myself and if possible mould a home for myself when the time is ripe for that.
I stayed with them for two weeks before I finally summoned the courage to talk to doctor Stanley. I wanted to appeal to him to rent a personal apartment for me so I'll move out of here.
We stood at the corridor of the house talking seriously and I told him what I thought was the best for me.
At first doctor Stanley thought that it had something to do with the previous incident with his wife but I made him understand that it isn't because of that.
I told him the truth which is that I honestly hold no grudge against Mrs Vivian. I simply needed my independence and an environment to freely express my individuality. I want to live my life fully without feeling like I am inconveniencing anyone.
I really don't mind paying visits or occasionally spending weekends with them as I have grown so fond of Zion.
But permanently staying in a home that isn't mine is something I will rather not do to prevent any avoidable tr0μble.
" Are you sure this is what you truly want Jacob...? You are just twenty and you still need the presence of a family you can rely on for stability and support. Please Jacob rethink about this decision. I'll advise that you stay with us here as a son and I can guarantee you that nobody will ever disturb or send you out of here" Doctor Stanley said in a bid to convince me and he tenderly placed a hand on my shoulder
Mrs Vivian interrupted our discussion. We didn't even know she was listening to our conversation within earshot range until she came out and said to me
" Yes Jacob. Please stay with us here. I'm sorry about what I did to you and if that's why you want to go then I swéár to you that such will never ever happen again in this house. We are family now and I have come to love you as a son. So please reconsider and stay with us and don't go away please" Mrs Vivian said looking at me with pleading eyes
Honestly I have come to love her as a mother too. I love Zion as a brother and I have grown so fond of playing with him. Let me not talk of doctor Stanley who has been a father figure in my life all the time and to me he is my hero.
I became so confused and I didn't know what to choose. Looking at the pleading eyes of doctor Stanley and Mrs Vivian left me at a crossroad and I didn't know the decision to opt for anymore.
I was asking myself if I should accept to stay with them as a family or if I should still stand on my decision of leaving to kickstart my independence journey...?
After weighing the two options in front of me, I inhaled and exhaled heavily as I made a final decision on what I wanted.
