Alice's POV
Alexander's mom, Lauren, is a total sweetheart. I can't believe she belongs to the MÃ fia world; she is a big softie. Surprisingly, she wants me for her son and approves of our relationship.
I didn't want her to leave so early, but she received some news and jetted off with a quick goodbye. Her smile fell after she looked at her phone, worry clouding her face.
Reasons of why she ran off wandered in my head, almost sending me in an endless race, until my phone rang.
I wasn't surprised that Madison was the one calling. We talk to each other on the phone once a week...kind of.
Me: Hey, what's up?
Maddie: Cool. Um, is Alexander there with you? He isn't picking up his phone, and I want to tell him something.
What could be the matter? Why is her voice so worried?
Me: No, he isn't home. What's the matter?
Maddie: Alice, Peyton is missing.
Me: What do you mean she's missing?
Maddie: She ran away with the person she wants to marry. She likes girls, and her parents hà te it, so she ran off. Her phone is off, and she took nothing to track her with.
Should I be happy or sad? She might get into some sort of tróuble on the way. If she is supposed to get married to the Italian Mà fia head, then she will already be in the rival's target, right?
Alex won't have to get married because his "bride" isn't around. He will be mine and mine alone.
Yeah, I'm going with happy.
Me: Oh, how did you know that?
Maddie: She left a note that says "I don't want to get married to you or any guy except Claudia." I'm scared for her but happy for Alexander. She doesn't have any money on her, I think. She didn't take her car or any clothes.
That is bad.
Me: I'm sure she has everything planned out before she made the decision.
Maddie: You're right. She isn't foolish; she is smart, and I believe she won't make such impulsive actions. You're the best sister-in-law ever.
Me: I know.
Maddie: What do you mean?
Oops. Alex told me not to tell Maddie about our relationship because she is a blabbermouth, his word not mine.
She sounds really curious to know why I said that. I'm torn between keeping my word to my boyfriend or telling Maddie, who has had my back since the first day I met her, the truth that her brother and I are dating.
I'll go with the latter.
Me: Erm, Alex and I...
I could barely finish my sentence when she screamed into my ear. I had to take the phone away from my ear to avoid hearing her screams.
Maddie: Oh my fúcking God, are you serious?
Me: Yes. Don't say it out loud. Your father might be listening.
Maddie: I know, I won't make that mistake again. I'm so happy for you, babe.
Me: Thanks.
Maddie: I also have news. Let's meet up tomorrow at a cafe. I'll send you the address.
Deciding not to stress myself wondering what she wants to tell me, I nodded my head, even though she can't see me.
Me: Okay. See you tomorrow.
Maddie: Bye.
Me: Bye.
Immediately after hanging up, I dialed Alex to inform him about the recent news. He will be so delighted to hear the news if only he picks up his damn phone.
••
Striding into his office, I paused in my tracks seeing Alex with a man. The man had his back to me, so I couldn't see his face, but Alex's expression was enough to tell me that this wasn't a good time to make my appearance.
Well, it's his fault. If only he had picked up my one hundred missed calls, then I wouldn't be here to disturb his meeting.
"Hi," the man said to me with a big smile on his slightly wrinkled face, making me uncomfortable. "You're very pretty."
I said nothing as I watched him leave the office, leaving me with an angry Alex.
Angry, no.
Enraged, yes.
Alexander looked like he could squeeze the lifé out of me, but he calmed himself down when I told him the news.
He was still stressing over the news after ten minutes of me telling him, raking his hair almost every five seconds.
"Please stop pacing around," I said, closing my eyes briefly at his figure moving to and fro in the office. "You're making me dizzy."
"Oh, sorry. Sorry for making you dizzy when someone could literally be déad right now," his sarcasm flowed together with his words.
"Why are you talking to me like that? It isn't my fault that she ran away."
"I never said it was."
"Why then are you using that tone on me?"
He opened his mouth to talk when his phone rang. He quickly went over to his table to get it, as if he was waiting for the call since forever.
Him: Where the fuck are you?!
Who is that?
Him: That wasn't a very sensible decision to make.
Peyton?
Him: Where are you? Out of the country?
Definitely Peyton.
Him: You and Claudia stay safe. I'll send you some money if you need it. Of course, you're fine.
He laughed, exhaling a breath.
Him: Yeah. Luckily, the engagement will be called off. You take care.
"I'm going home," I said as soon as he hung up. He gave me a confused and questioning look. "Bye."
"Wait." His voice finally getting softer made me stop walking. Wrapping his hands around my waist, he placed his head on my shoulder. "I'm sorry for raising my voice. I was just pissed."
"Yeah, I noticed," I muttered under my breath, facing him. "Is she okay?"
"Yes, she is in Manila," he replied, pulling me closer as he peppered kisses on my neck. "Claudia is her girlfriend. They plan to get married in Manila and then move to Mexico to start their family."
"So, you won't get married then."
He stopped his kisses, staring at me. "No, I will."
What did he say? Does he perhaps like Peyton? Is that why he is so worried about her?
Wait, impossible. He loves me, I know that. Does he mean me?
"What?"
"I'll get married to you and start a family with you."
I hope my mouth doesn't tear off with the big smile on my face and the overblushing on my cheeks.
"First, I want a baby girl who will look exactly like you," he added, his eyes not leaving mine.
He has mentioned this to me numerous times before. I truly believe that he will make a wonderful father and a loving dad to our daughter.
However, there is a lingering feeling that this situation is too good to be true. It feels like Alex is just a figment of my imagination, impossible to grasp or hold onto. I fear that this dream-like state will eventually vanish, leaving me empty-handed.
I yearn to cherish every moment with Alex before it slips through my fingers. I want to embrace this happiness before it slips away.
Unfortunately, deep down, I know that the ending may not be favorable. Both Alex and I will inevitably be húrt, and that's something I desperately want to avoid.
