Alexander's POV
In the past two days, I've been incredibly busy. I had a lot of work piled up, contracts to read and sign, and meetings to attend. I had to work late into the night yesterday, and it looks like I might have to do the same today.
Fortunately, Maddie was with Alice yesterday, so at least she wasn't bored like I was.
However, I'm not sure what made Madison think she could come over without my permission. I'll definitely have a serious talk with her about it later. Despite that, Alice seemed to enjoy her company, and I didn't want to ruin anything for her.
Madison is actually my older sister by two years. She can be quite annoying at times, always talking when you don't want to engage with her. She's my father's favorite and most prized possession, and sometimes I wish he loved me even half as much as he loves her. My little sister, Addison, on the other hand, is more preferable compared to Madison. She only engages in conversation after carefully observing you, and she loves to travel. She's less annoying than Madison, but I can't imagine my life without either of them. It would definitely be different without them, I think. I certainly don't want to live a life without them; it would be incredibly dull.
There were moments when my father would deprive me of food all day, but Maddie would come to my rescue, bringing me some nourishment and insists that I eat. Other times, it was Addie who saved me, and most frequently, it was my mom.
Speaking of my mom, she hasn't given me a moment's rest in the past two months.
She constantly calls me, asking about Alice and when she can meet her. While I would love for my beautiful mother to meet my beautiful Alice, I fear that my father might find a way to hà rm her, and I wouldn't be able to survive that.
Lately, I've been feeling something within me. It's a powerful sensation, but I can't quite pinpoint what it is. It occurs whenever I think of Alice - my heart races, a silly grin spreads across my face, and goosebumps appear on my skin.
Could it be my yearning for her?
Perhaps my body is reacting to the patience I've shown her, and it's not something it appreciates. Or maybe it's because she's transforming me into a better person - a more compassionate human being. It could also be that I've finally found true happiness with her.
Whatever it was, I enjoyed it and don't want it to end. I want to continue feeling this way. I strive to be nothing like my father, and I want my children to be proud and happy to have me. If Alice is helping to shape me into a better person, I welcome her influence.
"Sir, your coffee," my secretary's voice came through the intercom.
I realized that I should make an effort to know and remember her name. She was different from the others I've had, who only seemed interested in sedúcing me.
I've had to let go of many secretaries for that reason. If I wanted a casual encounter, I knew where to find it.
"Please bring it in," I replied, pressing a button to unlock the door. This was already my fifth cup of coffee today, and it was only 12:10 PM.
I usually try to limit my caffeine intake, as two cups are usually enough for me in a day. However, today I needed the extra energy to tackle the pile of work ahead. She entered my office, and for the first time since hiring her, I truly took the time to observe her.
With her blonde hair neatly pulled back into a bun, and her piercing blue eyes focused ahead, she carefully carried the steaming cup of coffee. "Here is your coffee, Sir," she informed me, placing it on my desk.
Curiosity piqued, I inquired, fixing her with a stern gaze, "What's your name?"
Nervously, she fidgeted with her fingers, her body tensing. "Um, Bethel," she replied.
I repeated her name, causing her to raise her head, her fearful eyes meeting mine. "Are you busy?" I asked, to which she hesitantly replied, "No."
Without hesitation, I interrupted, "Please sit and help me with this." She immediately took a seat, and we began our task. "I want you to thoroughly crosscheck these documents. I don't want to sign anything that isn't beneficial," I instructed.
As we worked together, she read aloud while I signed.
Surprisingly, we made a great team. It dawned on me that I had never considered the benefits of being closer to my secretary. If only I had taken the time to work alongside her more often... What was her name again?
"Excuse me, sir," her voice interrupted my focus on the laptop. "May I go get something to eat?"
"Yes," I replied, glancing up from my work. She stood up from the seat in front of my desk, picking up the empty cup. "Do you want something?"
"No," I responded, shifting my attention back to the laptop.
"Okay, I'll be back soon, sir," she informed me before leaving.
I checked the time on my clock, 3:34 PM. I realized I hadn't spoken to my Sweet Poison today. As I reached for my phone to call her, an incoming call appeared on the screen. My eagerness to hear and speak to Alice multiplied when I saw the caller's ID. It was my father.
"Good..." I began to say, but he interrupted me abruptly. "Keep your fúcking greetings to yourself," he snapped. "Why have you sworn to be such a disgrà ce to this family, Alexander? You are my son, why don't you act like it? You are Aidan Romano's son, dà mn it!" His words poured out angrily, and I couldn't help but feel a surge of frustration. "I would rather not have a son than have you as one. I repeat, that girl will be your dównfall, and you will regrét it." The conversation continued in a heated manner.
"Are you finished?" I asked, my voice tinged with hiddén pain. I fought back tears threaténing to escape my eyes and brushed them aside. "Aidan Romano, there is nothing you can say that will prevént me from having that girl in my house. I don't cà re about your opinion, and I couldn't cà re less if I disappoint you. Alice will never, and I mean NEVER, leave that house unless she wants to. I would appreciate it if you could please leave me be. Your clan is thriving, there are no issues, and the shipments are running smoothly. I don't believe I owe you any explanations on how to manage my own life."
You know, my father has this uncanny ability to completely ruin my mood. I was feeling happy, about to make a call to the only person I can freely talk to, when his call came in and now, I'm furious. Another call came through, this time from another family member, Madison. I ignored it as it continued to ring, until she finally sent a message.
Madison: I'm so sorry. Dad might have overheard me talking to mom about Alice and you. I swear I didn't mean for him to hear. I apologize. PS: He's unwéll, barely able to walk, so he can't do anything unless he hires someone to hà rm Alice. I shouldn't have spoken so carelessly.
I threw the phone across the room after reading the message. Of course, I blamed her. I should have known better. Madison can be quite talkative and needs to learn to be more discreet.
I glanced at the phone on the floor, deciding to retrieve its SIM card.
Fortunately, I had backed up everything to the cloud, so I wouldn't lose any data. I promptly ordered a new phone before continuing.
Despite my father's attempt to dampen my spirits, I refused to let him ruin my day.
If Madison keeps blabbering, I may have to find a way to silénce her permanently.
I eagerly anticipate returning to the comfort of my own home. Alice's arms provide me with a sense of safety and protection from my inner demons and nightmares.
She is quickly becoming everything I've ever desired.
